Book Synopsis Modern Italian Literature by : Ann Caesar
Download or read book Modern Italian Literature written by Ann Caesar and published by Polity. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative and vividly written book brings readers into the heart of Italian literary culture from the 1690s to the present. It probes the work of major authors in their broad cultural context, traces the history of audiences and publishers, explores the shifting relationship between public and private, assesses the impact of significant historical trends and events on creative processes, and establishes the continuities as well as the discontinuities of the Italian literary tradition. A synoptic overview at the beginning of the volume is designed to help the reader get her or his bearings in the detail of the nine chapters which follow. Using an essentially chronological framework, the book is divided into three major cultural time-spans: the long eighteenth century, the decades of national identity formation and the creation of modern', industrial Italy between 1816 and 1900, and the twentieth century with its constant renegotiation of national cultural identity. A final epilogue provides a snapshot of Italian literary culture in the near-present. This is a book which will be readily accessible to students and all those interested in Italian culture, and at the same time is based on the most up-to-date scholarship. New readings of the canonical authors rub shoulders with a refreshing attention to standard and popular writing, gender issues, and the interaction between written and oral forms, producing a history of modern Italian literature which is new in its conception and its scope.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Italian Literature, Classical and Modern: Also, the Legend of IL Cenacolo, a Poem "Qual alto seggio T' abhia assegnato Dio ne le sue glorie, Alighiero, non so. So che la tua Italia ti loco nel piu sublime. So ch' ella sempre t' oblio nei giorni De la vilta: ma ai di de la speranza Legge il tuo libro; e ormai piu non t' oblia." Perhaps of the three parts of the "Divina Commedia" the "Paradiso" is the least dwelt upon by English students of the great Italian poet. It has the just reputation of being the part most difficult of comprehension in the whole poem. Those who attempt to read it are deterred from doing so by the allegories and metaphors which, frequently employed throughout the work, occur in almost every line of the "Paradiso;" by the arrangement of the heavenly spheres according to the now exploded Ptolemaical system; and, above all, by the theological and philosophical expositions which, it must be admitted, are not entirely free from the scholasticism prevalent in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. These appear to be some of the reasons why the "Paradiso," considered by Italian critics the greatest effort of Dante's mind, is so little appreciated by foreigners. Book Synopsis Introduction to Twentieth Century Italian Literature by : Robert Gordon
Download or read book Introduction to Twentieth Century Italian Literature written by Robert Gordon and published by Bristol Classical Press. This book was released on 2005-08-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short accessible introductions to European literature and culture. Twentieth-century Italy was marked by a profound and often convulsive transformation in both society and culture, accompanied at various stages by war, violence and dictatorship. This was Italy's 'difficult' entry into modernity. The voices of Italian literature responded to this transformation with a bewildering combination of excitement and anxiety, from the loud embrace of the new in Futurism to melancholy laments for tradition. In the process, some of the greatest works of modern literature were created. Robert Gordon offers a vivid overview of the century's literature, charting a series of motifs of Italy's 'difficult modernity' - from war to the city, from language to geography, from marginal groups to avant-garde movements - through a wide array of writers and texts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Studies Their Place in Modern Education: An Inaugural Address It is impossible, indeed it would be unseemly, to begin this, the first lecture given from a chair of Italian in our country, without sincerely thanking the Vice-Chancellor and the electors of this venerable University for honouring me with their choice. It is a great honour, a great privilege, and - a great responsibility. And I am sure you will believe me when I say that I have not dared to shoulder this charge without many searchings of heart, for I come among you naked of all academic vesture and from a social status rarely represented in your chairs. Book Synopsis Echoing Voices in Italian Literature by : Teresa Franco
Download or read book Echoing Voices in Italian Literature written by Teresa Franco and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the reception of classics and translation from modern languages as two different, yet synergic, ways of engaging with literary canons and established traditions in 20th-century Italy. These two areas complement each other and equally contribute to shape several kinds of identities: authorial, literary, national and cultural. Foregrounding the transnational aspects of key concepts such as poetics, literary voice, canon and tradition, the book is intended for scholars and students of Italian literature and culture, classical reception and translation studies. With its two shifting focuses, on forms of classical tradition and forms of literary translation, the volume brings to the fore new configurations of 20th-century literature, culture and thought.
