Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general survey of all the inscriptional material in the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and modern Indo-Aryan languages, including donative, dedicatory, panegyric, ritual, and literary texts carved on stone, metal, and other materials. This material comprises many thousands of documents dating from a range of more than two millennia, found in India and the neighboring nations of South Asia, as well as in many parts of Southeast, central, and East Asia. The inscriptions are written, for the most part, in the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts and their many varieties and derivatives. Inscriptional materials are of particular importance for the study of the Indian world, constituting the most detailed and accurate historical and chronological data for nearly all aspects of traditional Indian culture in ancient and medieval times. Richard Salomon surveys the entire corpus of Indo-Aryan inscriptions in terms of their contents, languages, scripts, and historical and cultural significance. He presents this material in such a way as to make it useful not only to Indologists but also non-specialists, including persons working in other aspects of Indian or South Asian studies, as well as scholars of epigraphy and ancient history and culture in other regions of the world.

Book excerpt: Thousands of inscriptions have been copied over a period of more than 100 years from different parts of India. Inscription serves as the important source material for the reconstruction of history. Coping new inscriptions is a desideratum on the one hand, they also reveal new information for further research on the other. The Epigraphical Society of India has been established with an idea to provide a forum to bring out fresh information and epigraphical discoveries made in different parts of the country. The journal of the Epigraphical Society of India will provide plenty of information, if judiously utilized,to reconstruct our past. The volumes published so far are of a considerable value and guide the epigraphists to value and guide the epigraphists to understand the various aspects of Indian history. Book excerpt: The most significant of India's contributions of the civilization of the world was made in the ancient period. Unfortunately, the history of this glorious epoch, which is an interesting chapter in the annals of human civilization, was lost and we have been reconstructing it on the basis of information gathered from various sources. Of these, epigraphy is the most important, since the major part of what we already know about ancient India is derived from the study of inscriptions. In the present work, Professor D.C. Sircar deals with various problems relating to Indian pigraphy and it is expected to be useful to people interested in ancient Indian history in general and Indian inscriptions in particular. Some of the topics discussed herein are: inscriptions and their evidence, languages in which the inscriptions are written, writing materials, the preparation and preservation of documents, copperplate grants, stanzas on bhumi-dana, Indian epigraphy abroad, systems of dating and the different eras, technical expressions including royal titles and official designations, taxes, land measures, nomenclature, etc. There are thirty-six plates illustrating various types of epigraphical records.

Book excerpt: This book comprises a selection of 50 articles on Indian epigraphy and chronology written by Harry Falk and republished as facsimiles by his former colleagues and students on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The selected writings cover a period of almost two decades of Harry Falk's scholarly activity at the Freie Universität Berlin. Most of the articles deal with inscribed objects dating to the early historical period inscribed in Kharo'hi and Brahmi. In many cases, the inscriptions are being published for the first time. Illustrations and photographs accompany most of the editions. The epigraphical studies are supplemented by Falk's innovative studies on Indian chronology. These introduce new perspectives on the early Indian eras such as those of Kani'ka, Azes and the Yavanas. Comprehensive indices covering objects, names, places, words and general topics facilitate access to the contents. In addition, Harry Falk wrote an appendix in which he provides comments and corrections to his articles.

THE INDIAN EMPIRE VOLUME II HISTORICAL CHAPTER I EPIGRAPHY /. Introductory Note The subject of this contribution to the Imperial Gazetteer Introducis the explanation of the nature and value of the epigraphic tOTy noteor inscriptional bases of Indian research for the pre-Musalman period. And the topic is an important one; for, not only is India particularly rich in inscriptional remains, but also those remains are the only sure grounds of historical results in every line of research connected with its ancient past. We have, however, to exclude from our treatment of this subject one branch which has always been found more generally attractive than any of the others. The inscriptions on coins and gems, better termed, by way of avoiding confusion, 'legends' on coins and gems, are epigraphic materials. But they are a special class of such materials; and the treatment of them falls, most properly, under the subdivision of pumismatology. We have to confine our attention here to those epigraphic remains which have come to be best known as 'inscriptions' by way of distinction from the numismatic materials. Nevertheless, we hope to be' able to show that our topic is no dry and dull one, but is full of interest as well as importance. The inscriptions, thus indicated as our topic, are notifications, very frequently of an official character, and generally more or less of a public nature, which recite facts, simple or complex, with or without dates, and were intended to be lasting records of the matters to which they refer. They are in almost all cases found engraved, not written. They were occasionally engraved VOL. II. B upon monuments in the shape of great monolithic columns; as, for instance, in the case of some of the moral and religious edicts...
