This book was released on 1998 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises studies in the fields of historical geography and historiography in biblical times. Both aspects contribute significant insights into scribal tradition and illuminate modes of literary composition. These are indispensible for any evaluation of the historical information embodied in the ancient compositions. The tangible data of territorial history promote the evaluation of the literary frameworks involved due to the conceptual terminology that may be perceived. Literary complexes and the interrelationship of text-groups may thus be defined by methods that are independent of literary criteria, yet contribute control elements to literary criticism. More than half of the book is new to the English reader, previously unpublished or translated from Hebrew and many papers partly revised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biblical Geography and History" is a comprehensive exploration of the geographical and historical aspects of the Bible. Charles Foster Kent, a respected biblical scholar of his time, delves into the lands, people, and events that are central to the narratives found in the Old and New Testaments. The book is divided into several sections, each focusing on different regions and historical periods. Kent provides detailed descriptions and analyses of the geographic locations mentioned in the Bible, helping readers to better understand the settings in which biblical events took place. In addition to discussing the physical geography, Kent delves into the historical context of the biblical narratives. He provides insights into the customs, cultures, and historical events that shaped the biblical world. This includes the ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria, which interacted with the Israelites and are crucial to understanding the broader historical context of the Bible. Kent's work also examines the cultural and religious aspects of biblical history, shedding light on the religious practices, traditions, and beliefs of the people mentioned in the Bible. "Biblical Geography and History" serves as an essential resource for students of biblical studies, archaeology, and history, as it provides a comprehensive overview of the geographic and historical background of the Bible. It aids in bridging the gap between the ancient world and the biblical texts, offering valuable insights into the settings and events described in the Old and New Testaments. Charles Foster Kent's book has been a valuable reference for scholars and readers interested in biblical history and its cultural and geographic context.

Book excerpt: The History and Geography of the Bible Story: A Study Manual by Bob and Sandra Waldron is one of the best resources of its kind for individual and class study. It is important for each student of the Bible to gain information about the history and geography of the Bible in order to better understand the context of the message of salvation. The Waldrons have demonstrated an ability to take difficult material and make it both understandable and usable. The book can do several things for the user: (1) it will provide a complete survey of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation; (2) it will give one a good summary of the history of the nations involved in sacred history; (3) it will acquaint one with the geography of the Bible lands. The good maps add tremendously to the quality and usefulness of the book. There are a total of 52 lessons. The first lessons discusses man as an intelligent being. The next 7 lessons give a brief look at all the Bible Lands. The rest of the lessons (9-52) correlate the Bible history and geography together. There are plenty of full color maps with corresponding blank maps for the student to fill in. Every few lessons, there is a section of review questions. Charts, lists, and easily read narrative make this a great study for your Bible class or personal study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the past three decades, Nadav Na’aman has repeatedly proved that he is one of the most careful historians of ancient Canaan and Israel. With broad expertise, he has brought together archaeology, text, and the inscriptional material from all of the ancient Near East to bear on the history of ancient Israel and the land of Canaan during the second and first millenniums B.C.E. Many of his studies have been published as journal articles or notes and yet, together, they constitute one of the most important bodies of literature on the subject in recent years, particularly because of the careful attention to methodology that Na’aman always has brought to his work. This final volume in the 3-volume set of Na’aman’s collected essays contains 29 essays. Among the topics addressed are: the sources available to Israel’s historians late in the first millennium B.C.E.; the reality behind the narratives relating to the history of the United Monarchy; the effect of the author’s own time on the composition of the histories of Saul, David, and Solomon; and the contributions of archaeology to the study of the tenth century B.C.E. In the course of covering these themes, Na’aman touches on topics such as history and historiography, textual and literary problems, historical geography, society, administration, cult, and religion.

This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography History without Geography is incomplete and unsatisfactory. The duty of the historian is, not only to record the events of his narrative, with their causes and consequences, but to sketch the attending scenes and circumstances, so as to present a clear and living picture of tho whole. For this purpose Geography comes to the aid of History, to delineate the scenery of the historical narrative, to describe the city or country where the event recorded transpired, to depict the mountain, plain, or valley, the ocean, sea, or river, the lake or fountain that blend in the surrounding landscape. Nothing so effectually aids us to call up from the tomb the figure of the past and reinvest it with its former lineaments, as these changeless features of nature. These alone give reality and life to the picture. More than all else they carry us back to live in the bygone days of history, and to become living actors in its stirring scenes. Zion is still beautiful for situation, as in the days of the Psalmist; the bills stand about Jerusalem now as they did when their picturesque beauties inspired the song of the royal hard. There is the Mount of Olives, and Mount Moriah, with the deep, silent valley below; and there is "Siloa's brook," still fresh and full, as when it flowed "fast by the oracle of God." The heights of Hebron, tho grazing-grounds and wells of Beersheba, are the same as when Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob tended there their flocks. Lebanon and Cannel, Tabor, Herraon and Eashan, the Lake of Galileo and its winding shores, arc clad still in all the varied beauties which held and charmed the eye of Jesus of Nazareth. These, contemplated in vivid mental conception, carry us back to walk with Jesus by tho silent, solemn shore of that lake, to commune in spirit with the sweet singer of Israel, and to converse with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob on the tented field. Thus History and Geography are inseparably associated together, and should ever be studied in connection. Each, by association, lends new interest to the other; and both are learned with more ease than either when studied separately. Read with careful reference to geographical and chronological data, locate in time as in history, and in apace as in geography, the events of the past, trace upon chart and map the shifting scenes of the narrative, and what was before insipid and profitless, becomes, liko the "expressive canvas" and the "speaking marble," instinct with life and spirit. What was crowded in confusion upon the mind, spreads out in distinct and beautiful perspective, leaving an impression clear and abiding as the landscape of the painter. History and Geography are by common consent considered indispensable branches of study in every primary school. Ancient history and classical geography occupy a large place in every liberal course of education, and why? only that, as names and places occur in conversation, reading, or public address, we may have some acquantance with their relative position and importance, together with the historical incidents With which they are associated. But the cities and sites of Scripture History come before us in reading, in conversation, and in the instructions of the pulpit, every day of our life, from childhood to hoary age, while we live in profound ignorance of them, and count it no reproach, no loss. Book excerpt: Extent of the Biblical World. In its widest bounds, the biblical world included practically all the important centres of early human civilization. Its western outpost was the Phoenician city of Tarshish in southern Spain (about 5° west longitude) and its eastern outpost did not extend beyond the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf (about 55° east longitude). Its southern horizon was bounded by the land of Ethiopia (about 5° south latitude) and its northern by the Black Sea (about 45° north altitude). Thus the Old and New Testament world extended fully sixty degrees from east to west, but at the most not more than fifty degrees from north to south.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Geography of the Bible The great importance of Bible Geography appears when we consider that the correct understanding of the Sacred Narrative is often dependent upon a knowledge of geographical locations. No geography is so valuable to us as that connected with the Holy Scriptures, and yet I think we are safe in saying that it is the least studied of all geography. When we read of a city, an empire, a moun tain, a plain, a river, or a sea, we naturally form some idea of its location. To form right ideas of such things is an inestimable help to the understanding of the events of the Bible, and to form wrong ideas of geographical locations often leads to error in the interpretation of the Scriptures. The contents of the following pages should not prove tedious nor uninteresting, for every place under consideration is in some way re lated to the history of the chosen people of God, and most of the places are associated directly or indirectly with the walks and works of our Master. The minutest details connected with the sacred narratives of the Bible seem impor tant and alive with interest to those who love and long for truth. The plan of this book is to combine just enough of history with geography to make the latter interesting and profitable The Bible student will find a good wall map of Palestine invaluable as an accompaniment of this volume. The contents of this volume were first pre pared as a text-book in Bible Geography and used by the writer in teaching a class of about eighty young men and women. At the request of many who happened to see those lesson sheets, the course is now given to the public, in this form.
