Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Education: During the Age of Renaissance, 1400 1600 The present volume, it is hoped, may serve a double purpose. Its subject appeals to all those who are concerned in classical education and desire to make acquaintance with the achievements of the great scholars and teachers who laid the foundation of higher education for the modern world. To many such readers it will come as a surprise to find how problems thought peculiarly modern and solutions propounded as original and profound were commonplaces with their predecessors three centuries ago. The book may prove useful, also, to students of another type, to those, namely, who are taking up systematic enquiry into the history of education as a subject of post-graduate reading. To them these Studies point the way to wider enquiry, and, in particular, to examination of sources. The author has, intentionally, made choice of certain writers on the ground that, although of high educational interest, they have not hitherto been treated, in English at least, from this special standpoint. Book Synopsis "Women, Manuscripts and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350?550 " by : JoniM. Hand
Download or read book "Women, Manuscripts and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350?550 " written by JoniM. Hand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Joni M. Hand sheds light on the reasons women of the Valois courts from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century commissioned devotional manuscripts. Visually interpreting the non-text elements-portraits, coats of arms, and marginalia-as well as the texts, Hand explores how the manuscripts were used to express the women?s religious, political, and/or genealogical concerns. This study is arranged thematically according to the method in which the owner is represented. Recognizing the considerable influence these women had on the appearance of their books, Hand interrogates how the manuscripts became a means of self-expression beyond the realm of devotional practice. She reveals how noblewomen used their private devotional manuscripts as vehicles for self-definition, to reflect familial, political, and social concerns, and to preserve the devotional and cultural traditions of their families. Drawing on documentation of women?s book collections that has been buried within the inventories of their fathers, husbands, or sons, Hand explores how these women contributed to the cultural and spiritual character of the courts, and played an integral role in the formation and evolution of the royal libraries in Northern Europe.
Book Synopsis A History of Western Education (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) by : James Bowen
Download or read book A History of Western Education (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) written by James Bowen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 1654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set reprints volumes 1, 2 and 3 of James Bowen's A History of Western Education originally published by Methuen in the 1970s. Volume One: The Ancient World: Orient and Mediterranean 2000B.C - A.D. 1054 The volume traces the development of education in the ancient world from the first scribal cultures of Mesopotamia and Egypt to learning in the early Christian church. A detailed account is given of the acheivements of Greece in literacy, learning, philosophy and training for public life - achievements which were further developed in the Hellenistic Orient and incorporated by the Romans into their own highly organized educational system. This leads to the emergence of a specifically Christian ideal of education, the decline of secular learning in the West, and the preservation of learning both in Byzantium and in Western monasticism. Volume Two: Civilization of Europe: Sixth to Sixteenth Century Volume Two follows the growth and process of learning in Europe from its foundations in the Carolingian era through its evolution in medieval Europe - especially italy, France, Germany and England - to its expansion and refinement in the sixteenth century. Particular attention is paid to: * The role of medieval institutions of the cathedral and grammer schools and the university * The contribution of notable scholars of the age such as Abelard, Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus and Luther Volume Three: The Modern West: Europe and the New World The final volume covers the period of educational dissent, which became conspicuous in the early seventeenth century and reached crisis proportions in the late twentieth, when the dominant ideologies of progress and equality, generated at the beginning of the nineteenth century, were questioned for the first time on a widespread, popular scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines key theorists in depth in order to give some insight into cultural change as reflected in their curricular recommendations and in the interplay they reveal between the two fundamental educational concepts of ‘artifice’ and ‘nature’. The essays on the various theorists – Erasmus, Vives, Castiglione, Elyot, Montaigne, Bacon, Comenius, Locke and Rousseau can be read separately but the book also forms an integrated whole, with a continuity of themes explored from theorist to theorist. The book not only charts a historical development but also reveals much that may deepen our understanding of contemporary educational dilemmas.
