Book Synopsis The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism by : Adele Berlin
Download or read book The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism written by Adele Berlin and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of biblical poetry is enhanced by the study of its structure. In this book Adele Berlin analyzes parallelism, a major feature of Hebrew poetry, from a linguistic perspective. This new edition of Berlin's study features an additional chapter, "The Range of Biblical Metaphors inSmikhut,"by late Russian linguist Lida Knorina. Berlin calls this addition "innovative and instructive to those who value the linguistic analysis of poetry." It is a fitting coda to Berlin's adept analysis.

Book Synopsis Janus Parallelism in the Book of Job by : Scott B. Noegel
Download or read book Janus Parallelism in the Book of Job written by Scott B. Noegel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noegel here examines instances of Janus parallelism in the Hebrew Bible with particular attention to the book of Job, and with excursuses on the device in other ancient Near Esatern literatures. The author finds the punning device integral to the book of Job, serving a referential function. Within the context of dialogue and debate, the polysemous statements resemble a poetry contest among the participants (Job, his friends, and Elihu). The book also treats the relationship between wordplay and wisdom literature; polysemy as preserved in the Greek, Aramaic, Latin, and Syriac translations; and the impact of Janus parallelism on textual criticism and the unity of the book of Job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Biblical Parallelism: Part I. Parallelism in Amos; Part II. Parallelism in Isaiah, Chapters 1-10 While in Mr. Newman's Amos studies the material has been classified by types, in my paper the first five chapters of Isaiah have been studied verse by verse, the Authorized English trans lation given at the head of each paragraph or stanza discussion, the nature of the parallelism pointed out, and one or several emendations suggested wherever the parallelism either is itself defective or indicates other stylistic defects. In chapters 6 - 10 only those passages have been treated which are apparently defective or otherwise call for special comment; the parallelism of the remaining portions will be recognized upon reference to the translation of the reconstructed text. Book Synopsis On Biblical Poetry by : F. W. Dobbs-Allsopp
Download or read book On Biblical Poetry written by F. W. Dobbs-Allsopp and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely considering the characteristics of biblical Hebrew poetry beyond its currently best known feature, parallelism,On Biblical Poetry demonstrates the many interesting and valuable interpretations that yield from analyses of major facets of biblical verse, as well as careful attention to prosody--rhythm, lineation, and the like--and close reading. Through a series of programmatic essays, F.W. Dobbs-Allsopp argues that biblical poetry is, in most respects, just like any other verse tradition--and thus biblical poems should be read and interpreted like other poems. Using the same critical tools and kinds of guiding assumptions as traditional verse scholarship, this book also considers the historicity and cultural specificity that distinguishes the verse of the Bible. The literary and the historical, then, are in view throughout. Issues of orality, textuality, and literacy at the site of biblical poems are also probed extensively and there is a strong comparative orientation to much of the thinking in the volume.
Book Synopsis Innovations in Hebrew Poetry by : Eric D. Reymond
Download or read book Innovations in Hebrew Poetry written by Eric D. Reymond and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars point to similarities between Sirach and the book of Proverbs and sometimes characterize Ben Sira's relationship to biblical poetry as one of imitation (often unsuccessful imitation), this study considers the innovative and unique aspects of Sirach poetry, especially its use of parallelism, and demonstrates that Ben Sira does not rely exclusively on Proverbs or any other biblical book as a model. "Innovations in Hebrew Poetry" provides detailed readings and philological analysis for the nine poems in the Masada scroll, and general observations on many other Sirach and biblical poems complement the analysis. Book Synopsis Interpreting Hebrew Poetry by : David L. Petersen
Download or read book Interpreting Hebrew Poetry written by David L. Petersen and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a convenient introduction to the unique aspects of interpreting the one-third of the Hebrew Bible that is in poetic form. Numerous are the occasions when a failure to distinguish poetry from prose in the Old Testament has resulted in flawed interpretation. Robert Lowth's Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews (1753, 1787), marked a turning point of major proportions by focusing on the importance of parallelism of lines. But new studies of the past decade now require significant adjustments to Lowth's analyses. Interpreting Hebrew Poetry offers an authoritative introduction to this discussion of parallelism, meter and rhythm, and poetic style. It also provides by way of example a poetic analysis of Deuteronomy 32, Isaiah 5:1-7, and Psalm 1.

Book excerpt: An essential resource for sound exegesis of biblical poetry While previous books on parallelism have focused almost exclusively on semantic classification, in his new book David Toshio Tsumura focuses on the grammatical and phonetic aspects as well. In particular, he defines and illustrates the vertical grammatical relationship between parallel lines. Readers will master how to read Biblical Hebrew poetry effectively by focusing on the basic linguistic features of word order, parallelistic structure, and rhetorical devices. For the benefit of nonspecialists, all Hebrew poems are given in accessible transliteration. This book is an indispensable companion to the Hebrew Bible for both beginners and experienced scholars.
