Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in American Education The six essays which make up this volume have been prepared at various times and deal with a variety of subjects. Nevertheless there is between them a thread of connection and re lation. They all are based upon two funda mental ideas: that education is substantially one from beginning to end, so that the same or similar methods may be applied throughout; and that teachers of every grade and subject have a common interest and may learn from each other. They are the outcome of a desire to make some small contribution to the great common fund of experience. That so many of these essays deal with the problems of the primary and secondary schools needs no apology. Every American must feel an interest in the systems which reach the great est number of pupils, and lay the foundations for later study. A short service in the Cam bridge School Committee has taught some thing of the aims and practical difficulties of primary and secondary education. I had to look up the facts and arguments from time to time in numerous reports, documents, pamphlets and books. Having collected so much material from these for my own enlightenment it has occurred to me to put it in a form accessible to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin and Greek in American Education: With Symposia on the Value of Humanistic Studies In 1909 - 10 the total attendance in public and private high schools and academies was boys and girls) in public high schools, and boys and girls) in schools of private support. In the decade 1900 to 1910 the population of the continental United States increased about 21 per cent; the enrolment in public high schools more than 60 per cent. The enrolment reported in public high schools in 1909 - 10 was more than four and one-half times as great as that reported twenty one years earlier, in 1889 - 90. The phenomenal growth of the public high schools is significant from several points Of view. The causes to Which it is due cannot even be enumerated here; but of immediate bearing upon our subject is the consequence that the drain upon the resources of taxpayers occa sioned by the necessity of providing buildings, equip ment, and instruction to meet unanticipated demands has been so great as to retard the normal increase in the compensation of teachers, which should keep pace with the increase in the cost of living and of professional preparation. The inadequacy Of compensation has driven from the high schools many of the strongest men on the staff Of instruction, Who have been forced to abandon teaching for less congenial but more lucrative pursuits; and it tends to deter young men of promise from entering the profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Public Schools: History and Pedagogics This book is intended mainly for the great body of American public school teachers, and, incidentally, for library use in normal schools or in normal departments of other institutions of learning, both public and private. The prominence now given to American educational history by the pedagogical departments of universities has led to a similar line of study in many state normal schools. Furthermore, these historical studies have been emphasized during the past decade by a long series of able and exhaustive papers on the history of our public school system, published in the annual reports of the United States Commissioner of Education, and in special Bulletins of Information. But these reports, rich in historical treasures, reach only a small number of the five hundred thousand teachers in our country, and are not available for practical purposes in large classes of normal students. There seems to be room for a hand-book containing a series of studies on the vital points of public school history; and also an outline of the psychological and pedagogical methods of instruction and management in American public schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Goose-Step: A Study of American Education Six hundred thousand young people are attending col leges and universities in America. They are the pick of our coming generation; they are the future Of our coun try. If they are Wisely and soundly taught, America will be great and happy; if they are misguided and mistaught, no power can save us. What is the so-called higher education of these United States? You have taken it, for the most part, on faith. It is Something which has come to be; it is big and impressive, and you are impressed. Every year you pay a hundred million dollars of public funds to help maintain it, and half that amount in tuition fees for your sons and daughters. You take it for granted that this money is honestly and wisely used; that the students are getting the best, the highest education the money can buy. Suppose I were to tell you that this educational machine has been stolen? That a bandit crew have got hold Of it and have set it to work, not for your benefit, nor the benefit of your sons and daughters, but for ends very far from these? That our Six hundred thousand young people are being taught, deliberately and Of set pur pose, not wisdom but folly, not justice but greed, not free dom but slavery, not love but hate? Book excerpt: Excerpt from American and English Studies, Vol. 2 A Recent essay on Dr. Johnson began with A the remark, "We may talk about him, and praise him, because we shall be the better for so doing; but we shall certainly say nothing new about him. These words may be applied to Abraham Lincoln with the utmost emphasis. Libraries have been written about him. His devoted and accomplished secretaries prepared a monumental work, telling all the things proper that the public should be told of him and of his great days as seen from the White House. A kind of inferior Boswell, but more communicative and even less fastidious, appeared in the person of his own partner in his Illinois law office. Senators and Representatives in Congress vied with each other in biographies and eulogies. Every clerk that served him, every politician that gained access to him, every civilian soldier that owed him promotion or pardon, the very employees of the departments, the captains of tens or hundreds in the remoter party organizations, and, of course, the members of the press, who in pursuit of their duty followed his footsteps and guessed at his purposes, - all felt bound to record and generally to publish their facts and their observations. The statesmen and the press of all nations first laughed at him, then studied him, analyzed him, weighed and estimated him;and at the end the civilized world paid him homage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intensive Studies in American Literature Every teacher of literature knows how often students come unprepared to the class with the excuse, I didn't know how to go at the lesson. They have in their hands some edition of a masterpiece, carefully annotated to explain words and allusions, but failing to suggest any plan of study. If the teacher has no time or opportunity to formulate such a plan, the students probably gain only detached and frag mentary notions of the classic, and no conception at all of its purpose and value. The studies in this volume are in tended to show the pupils one way to go at their work, by outlining plans for the study of some of the masterpieces most profitable for class work and most often used in the high school class in American literature. The studies are the product of class-room experience, and have been found practically useful as a means of inspiring in not a few young persons an intelligent appreciation of good literature. It may not be amiss to state here a few of the aims the volume attempts to achieve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Historical School The branches of knowledge especially devoted to the consideration of the mental powers, the duties and the high er interests of man, are comprehended under the general name of the moral sciences. In a restricted signification, moral science rests upon conscious experience, not empiri cal observation. It is conversant with man rather in his individual than in his social capacity. It teaches what he is, to the end that he may know what he can become, in stead of prescribing rules to guide him in determining what he shall do. But, in a larger sense, the term embraces certain mixed studies, which treat of men rather than of man; of the social being who is subject to human law, not the isolated agent that is amenable to the judgment of the conscience alone, and pleads before no other tribunal. Among these latter humbler and more uncertain studies, one of the most important and comprehensive in its appli cations is the Science (as it is perhaps too ambitiously call cd, ) of History, and I propose to ask your attention to a few remarks upon the general character of existing historical literature, the uses of historical knowledge, and the conditions which the peculiar character of our institutions requires in theamerican historical school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend in American Education One of the most significant phenomena in the develop ment of our American democracy during the past thirty years has been the ever enlarging scope of our system of education. There has been a conscious attempt on the part of our people to realize the democratic ideal of equality of opportunity. The remarkable progress that has been made is due in no small measure to the leadership of a group of men and women who have thought and planned in advance of current practice. During the twenty-five years which are just past Dean Russell has been responsible for the development of an educational institution which has trained leaders for our American schools from the kindergarten to the university. He has been in the position of one who has thought and planned in terms of our rapidly developing school system. His leadership would not have been recognized had he sought merely to meet the current demand. The very great respect which members of the profession have come to have for his judgment, and their confidence in his fore sight are clearly evidenced by the growth and influence of the institution over which he presides.
