Book excerpt: People naturally react to and learn about the world around them without giving it much thought or, at times, even being aware that learning is taking place. Learning and Thinking describes how that learning happens--discussing some of the stumbling blocks to effective learning, how people learn and use language, and how our thought processes sometimes guide our behavior and are affected by our behavior. In addition, this new, full-color book describes the abilities of people with exceptional memories and other cognitive abilities. The brand-new Student Handbook to Psychology set helps students learn more about such concepts as perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation, personality, relationships, and much more. In seven full-color volumes, readers are given a comprehensive survey of psychology--from its earliest scholars and practitioners to the development of its various methods and theories and up to the most recent research of the 21st century. Written in engaging and accessible prose by experts in the field, and enhanced with fascinating boxed features and a glossary in each volume, this set provides a ready reference for students and researchers interested in this popular field of study. --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise overview of the field of psychology—its historical roots, its most influential thinkers, and its role in the modern world. Psychology is frequently the most popular major on campus, but it can also be the most treacherous. In this guide, Daniel N. Robinson surveys the philosophical and historical roots of modern psychology and sketches the major schools and thinkers of the discipline. He also identifies those false prejudices—such as contempt for metaphysics and the notion that the mind can be reduced to the chemical processes of the brain—that so often perplex and mislead students of psychology. He ends by calling for psychology to investigate more intensively the problems of moral and civic development. Readers will find Robinson’s book to be an indispensable orientation to this culturally influential field.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Effective Psydwtherapy is the culmination of 15 years of personal interest in the area of psychotherapy outcome research. In my view, this is one of the most interesting and crucial areas in the field: it has relevance across disparate clinical disciplines and orientations; it provides a measure of how far the field has progressed in its efforts to improve the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic inter vention; and it provides an ongoing measure of how readily clinicians adapt to scientific indications in state-of-the-art care. Regrettably, as several of the chapters in this volume indicate, there is a vast chasm between what is known about the best available treatments and what is applied as the usual standard of care. On the most basic level there appears to be a significant number of clinicians who remain reluctant to acknowledge that scien tific study can add to their ability to aid the emotionally distressed. I hope that this handbook, with its many delineations of empirically supported treatments, will do something to remedy this state of affairs.
