This study intended to answer the following four research questions (1) Is there a significant difference in levels of student satisfaction between online courses that have undergone a systematic faculty peer review process and online courses that have not undergone a systematic faculty peer review process?; (2) Is there a significant difference in levels of student satisfaction between online courses that have not undergone a systematic faculty peer review process but are affiliated with a peer review program and online courses that have no affiliation with a peer review program?; (3) Which factors of quality instruction most directly relate to increased levels of student satisfaction in online courses that have been faculty peer reviewed?; and (4) Which factors of quality instruction most directly relate to increased levels of student satisfaction in online courses that have not been faculty peer reviewed but are affiliated with a peer review program? A total of 157 responses (out of 1,774 solicited) were obtained from the student satisfaction questionnaire, which is a 9% student response rate. A total of 7 responses (out of 54 solicited) were obtained from the course designer questionnaire, which is a 13% course designer response rate. Results of the study confirmed with statistical significance that students who were more comfortable with distance learning reported higher satisfaction with their online course. Results of the study also indicated that online courses that have undergone a formal peer review may lead to higher student satisfaction in the course. Surprisingly, however, results also indicated that courses that have not undergone a formal peer review but that are offered at institutions that are subscribed to a peer review program may lead to lower student satisfaction of the course. Both of these results were non-significant. The researcher recommends striving for statistical significance in future research by using a larger sample size. Additionally, the researcher recommends future research regarding the correlation of student satisfaction to peer review subscriptions, even without a formal peer review.

Through qualitative data collection, I intended to answer the following research questions: (a) What do students perceive as quality learning experiences in their online courses? and (b) How can understanding the student experience and perception of quality in their online learning environments improve course development procedures in online courses? Eight participants were interviewed regarding their experiences of quality in online courses. Results of the study determined Barriers, Interaction, Structure, and Community are the themes that students identify when defining quality online learning experiences. It was also indicated that students were more satisfied with their high quality online learning experiences. Implications and recommendations for improved practice and action steps are also provided. The researcher contends that these findings demonstrate the need to systematically build quality into online courses, which will offer students better learning experiences.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perceptions of quality of online courses as they relate to the IHEP Teaching/Learning Process Benchmarks, Course Structure Benchmarks, and Student Support Benchmarks. The research design for this study was correlational. Out of 3,310 students enrolled in online courses, 97 successfully participated in the study at an urban southeastern university. A survey instrument consisting of three parts was used in this study. Part I of the survey instrument contains 24 Likert Scale questions, examining students’ online learning experiences. Part II of the survey contained four Likert Scale questions, gathering students’ rating on the overall quality of the online course in which they were enrolled. Part III of the survey instrument sought to obtain demographic information from the participants. The research questions were designed to determine students’ perceptions of online course quality distance education and whether a relationship exists between online students’ perception of quality and the operational variables: peer interaction, instructor feedback, course structure, and student support services. Pearson’s r correlation was used to analyze the survey data. After the data were collected and analyzed, the researcher determined that peer interactions, feedback from the instructors, and course structure contribute to predicting students’ perceptions of online course quality in the online courses studied. Students rated the quality of online teaching, online learning and course structure above average to excellent. Students’ perceptions of the quality of student support services were rated the lowest. An examination of the relationship between student perception of course quality and, instructor feedback, peer interaction, course structure, and student support services was also conducted. The results of the examination indicated that moderately statistically significant relationships existed between student perceptions of course quality and each of the three variables. Conclusions and recommendations based on the findings in this study indicated peer interaction, instructor feedback course structures, and student support services contribute to students’ perceptions of online course quality.

Understanding students’ perceptions regarding online learning and the factors that contribute to their experiences will ultimately lead to improvements in online learning systems and practices. This qualitative, single descriptive case study explored how graduate students perceive quality in online learning and the impact those perceptions could have on retention based on the factors that influenced their experiences. Data were collected using an online questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The participants were selected from a private university in northeast Georgia and were online graduate nursing students. The results of this study reflected what graduate nursing students perceive as important factors necessary to improve the quality of online learning. The results showed several contributing factors that would impact retention in online learning. Majority of the participants expressed the need for improvement in teaching strategies that could improve online learning. Participants communicated the importance of engaging students to reduce the feeling of isolation, thus maintaining or increasing the possibility of retention in online programs.

Book excerpt: Online courses are appearing at a high rate, increasing the competitiveness of the distance learning market. Reluctance to invest in this area is due to cost and quality concerns. This study reports the findings of a survey of 700 professional and graduate education students regarding their comfort with technology, satisfaction with those experiences, and perceived quality, given their experience with online or hybrid courses. A structural equation model yielded strong fit to the data. For students with online course experience, comfort with technology was related to satisfaction with online course experience which was related to perceived quality; motivation to learn more about technology was also related to satisfaction of online learning experience. For students with hybrid online course experience (WebCT), comfort was related to satisfaction and motivation; motivation was also related to satisfaction; and satisfaction was ultimately related to perceived quality. In this group (WebCT), comfort was also directly related to perceived quality. Finally, among students with no online course-related experiences, comfort was related to motivation to learn about technology, but neither of these factors were related to perceived quality of online courses. For students with limited or no online course experience, perceptions of online course quality were more difficult to explain. (Contains 6 tables and 3 figures.).

Book excerpt: This research study explored students' perspectives about the quality of online courses using the Quality Matters Standards (Nath & Ralston-Berg, 2008) to apply the quality standards for online course design. The study examined if there was a difference in perceptions of quality between students who have had experience with an online course with students who have not had an online course. The participants were undergraduate students at a Midwestern Urban University located in the northeastern region of Ohio. The study took place in the Fall 2010. There were 135 participants. Of those 135, 128 had a valid response yielding a response rate of 94.8%. Seven did not respond. The study utilized a questionnaire developed by the researcher with 27 Likert questions, 7 demographic questions, and two questions being open-ended. The findings indicated that there is a significant difference in the perceptions of the quality pertaining to online courses between students who have had an online course with those students who have not had an online course. Students who have taken an online course had lower perceptions (mean scores) than students who have never had an online course. This was consistent among all variables examined: gender, age, ethnicity, working over 30 hours a week, credit hours enrolled, and GPA.

Book excerpt: Online education in the United States has seen dramatic growth for the past decade, outpacing any other growth in higher education. The concurrent mixed-methods study that was conducted for this research used data from a survey geology course taught in both environments, online and traditional face-to-face. The quantitative research focused on comparing student performance in an online course relative to the same face-to-face course, while the qualitative research investigated how students described their experiences taking an online class. Previous work in online education has been limited by relatively small sample sizes, conducting studies over just one semester, comparing dissimilar courses in one study, considering few of the STEM disciplines, and, of the limited studies with GPA as a covariate, using self-reported GPA rather than actual GPA. The quantitative analysis of this study compared student performance in online (N=171) and face-to face (N=1266) environments using data from the same STEM class over five years, with actual GPA as the covariate. ANCOVAs were calculated, and results showed that, overall, students performed better in the face-to-face class than in the online class, and this difference was more pronounced with students whose GPAs were 3.0 and lower. OLS regression was also conducted to identify predictors contributing to student success in the online classroom – GPA, course load, and student credit hours were the only significant factors predicting online performance. For the qualitative component of this study, issues related to student satisfaction were explored by conducting a focus group from four students enrolled in the online STEM course. Themes emerging from the discussion included interaction, technology, self-regulated learning practices, convenience, and course structure, with interaction as the most prominent theme. These findings help to explain the quantitative findings of why students with higher GPAs perform better – they do so, in part, because they have frequent interaction with the content despite the negative impact of the distance-based environment. Research, such as this study, is important in that identifying effective pedagogy promotes learning, particularly when the learning is done at a distance such as the online environment.
