Book excerpt: Ce mémoire est consacré à l'étude des propriétés de l'interface Eu/Pd(111) obtenue par dépôts d'europium (de 0 à 190 A) sur un monocristal de palladium (111). La structure électronique a été étudiée par des techniques spectroscopiques (photoémission X et UV et spectroscopie Auger) et la caractérisation structurale a été obtenue par diffraction d'électrons rapides (RHEED) et diffraction de rayons X. Lors de la croissance de l'europium, il est nécessaire de distinguer trois régimes en fonction de la quantité d'europium déposée et de la température. Pour les très faibles dépôts, on assiste, à temperature ambiante, à une croissance epitaxiée dans une structure p(2x2) jusqu'à deux monocouches d'europium. Pour des épaisseurs plus importantes, toujours à temperature ambiante, le système bascule dans une phase de diffusion réactive et il se forme un alliage Eu-Pd amorphe ou poly cristallin dont la concentration dépend de la quantité d'europium initialement déposée. Le résultat majeur de cette étude est obtenu après un recuit à 550°C de l'interface. Il se forme alors un compose défini EuPd3, légèrement contraint par rapport à sa structure d'équilibre, épitaxie sur le monocristal de palladium. Il faut noter que ce résultat est obtenu quelle que soit la quantité d'europium déposée et également si le dépôt est directement effectué sur le monocristal maintenu à 550°C. Enfin, il est possible de faire croitre, sur ce compose épitaxie, du palladium(111) en épitaxie, ce qui est la première étape de la formation d'un nouveau type de super-réseau ou alternent un métal de transition et un composé terre rare-métal de transition.
