Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular structure of interphases between polymer systems and metal substrates was determined by using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIR), and attenuated total-reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR) to characterize the failure surfaces of double cantilever beam adhesive joints prepared by curing beams of epoxies against metal beams. The structure of the interphases depended strongly on the curing agent, metal substrate, and use of a silane primer on the substrate. When joints were prepared by curing an epoxy with a tertiary amine curing agent at 75 C against a steel substrate primed with a dilute aqueous solution of gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy-silane, there was little reaction between the primer and adhesive and failure occurred near the primer/adhesive interface. The interphase consisted of low molecular weight siloxane oligomers in which the amino groups formed bicarbonates with water and carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere. When similar joints were cured at 150 C, the bicarbonates dissociated, enabling the adhesive and primer to react, and shifting the locus of failure near the primer/adherend interface or into the epoxy. The use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (sers) for non-destructive characterization of interphases between polymers and metals was demonstrated. (aw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared spectroscopy was used to determine the effect that metal substrates such as titanium, steel, 1100-series aluminum, 2024 aluminum, and copper have on the molecular structure and properties of gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (gamma-APS) primer films. When gamma-APS was absorbed onto any of the substrates from aqueous solutions at pH 10.4 for one minute and then dried at room temperature for thirty minutes, the molecular structure of the primer films was similar and consisted of low molecular weight siloxane polymers containing an considerable amount of absorbed carbon dioxide in the form of amine bicarbonates. When drying was carried out at 110 C, films formed on titanium, steel, and 1100-series aluminum were similar. The extent of polymerization in the films increased and most of the bicarbonates were dissociated. However, the amino groups in films formed on 2024 aluminum and copper oxidized to imine groups and the polymerization did not increase significantly. After drying at 150 C, the films formed on titanium, steel, and 2024 aluminum were all oxidized to the imine but the oxide on 1100-series aluminum inhibited the free radical oxidation reaction. Dissociation of the bicarbonates and oxidation of the amino groups were important factors in the reaction of the primers with epoxy resins.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of processing variables on the molecular structure and properties of interphases formed between polyimides and metal substrates was determined. Polyimide films were formed on aluminum substrates by spin-coating of polyamic acid followed by thermal imidization and by vapor-codeposition of the monomers followed by thermal imidization. Spin-coating of polyamic acid and thermal imidization were also used to deposit polyimide films on gold substrates. Films were formed on silver substrates by Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of alkylamine salts of polyamic acid followed by chemical imidization. 4-mercaptophenylphthalimide, a model polyimide, was adsorbed onto gold substrates by adsorption from solution. The films were characterized as appropriate by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIR), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The fracture energy required-to delaminate polyimide films from aluminum and gold substrates was determined using the circular blister test. Finite element analysis was used to determine the effects of plastic deformation on a global scale' on the fracture energy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies demand new materials. Polymer composites, with their wide range of possible fillers and polymers, open the way to an enormous range of materials with differing chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. The ultimate goal of polymer composite research is to formulate procedures that will lead to the design of composites with preset, i.e. specified, properties. Based on many years' experience in the field, the authors prepare the way towards just such a design procedure. The key element is the analysis and classification of the state of the filler-polymer interfaces from the point of view of their acid-base adsorption interactions. These interfacial phenomena play a pivotal role in determining overall properties of the composite: its rheological behaviour, its structural properties, catalytic effects in polymerization and polycondensation, and other technological characteristics. The book discusses and evaluates the extensive previous research scattered throughout the literature in Eastern Europe and the West, presents numerous experimental studies, and sets new benchmarks for the analysis of polymer composites. The book is required for researchers wanting to keep abreast of the progress in the burgeoning fields of polymer analysis and design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The different physical properties displayed by low molar mass organic materials and polymers are a result of their molecular organisation. In order to understand the structure – property relationship of a material it is necessary to first look at the interactions at a molecular level. This new edition of Polymer Structure Characterization provides readers with the background needed to understand the factors that influence molecular organization and how this affects the morphology and bulk physical properties of a material. In order to introduce the concepts, the book first looks at small molecular systems and builds up to complex macromolecular systems. The second edition has been fully revised and updated to include new examples and references. Topics covered include: organic crystals, liquid crystals, plastic crystals, polymer crystal growth, amorphous glassy materials, polymer surfaces and interfaces, colloids and molecular organization in liquids as well as two new chapters on self-assembly and biopolymer systems. The book is intended to provide complimentary material for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in materials science, molecular chemistry and chemical physics. In addition to polymer and material scientists, the book would also be of interest to chemists and physicists studying the properties of organic materials.

Book excerpt: This symposium was held at the l6lst ACS National Meeting, Los Angeles, March/April 1971. It represents a contribution to the discussion of problems connected with the state of water near macromolecules. Some papers are only peripheral to the problem of water structure but may become quite pertinent in specific cases. Questions concerned with water structure, rate of hydration, and similar problems are of importance for biological processes and are still not yet well understood. It is hoped that the papers presented here will be of some help in the clarification of problems in this area. H. H. G. Book excerpt: The authors illustrate the basic physics and materials science of conjugated polymers and their interfaces, particularly, but not exclusively, as they are applied to polymer-based light emitting diodes. The approach is to describe the basic physical and associated chemical principles that apply to these materials, which in many instances are different from those that apply to their inorganic counterparts. The main aim of the authors is to highlight specific issues and properties of polymer surfaces and interfaces that are relevant in the context of the emerging field of polymer-based electronics in general, and polymer-based light emitting diodes in particular. Both theoretical and experimental methods used in the study of these systems are discussed. This book will be of interest to graduate students and research workers in departments of physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and materials sciences studying polymer surfaces and interfaces and their application in polymer-based electronics.
