Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: System identification (SI) techniques are important in reducing gaps between the constructed structural systems and their structural design models and in health monitoring for damage detection. Modal-parameter SI and physical-parameter SI are two major branches in SI.Special character of this book: (1) The physical-parameter SI method explained in this book requires only two accelerometers for measurement of records. Furthermore only a simple manipulation of Fourier transformation is required.(2) The stiffness and damping can be identified simultaneously.(3) The modal parameter SI can supplement or support the result by the physical-parameter SI method.(4) In place of usual low-pass or high-pass filter techniques, a novel noise-bias compensation method is explained. Because the noise itself is not known in many cases, the identification and elimination of noise is a tough problem.(5) A new technique of system identification is explained in the case where an inner vibration source exists.(6) The accuracy of the explained SI methods is examined by the actual recorded data.(7) MATLAB codes are available. This book is intended for Structural Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Researchers, Graduate and undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: System identification is the process of developing or improving a mathematical representation of a physical system using experimental data. Over the past decade, several system identification techniques have been developed within different disciplines. This text/reference brings together the significant advances over the past decade into a single unified source -- with common mathematical notation that will enable readers from a variety of engineering areas -- e.g., aerospace, electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering --to apply system identification to engineering systems. Focuses on the three types of identification in engineering structures -- modal parameter identification; structural-model parameter identification; and control-model identification. For researchers and engineers, students, and teachers in vibrations, controls and system identification.

Book excerpt: Structural system identification is concerned with the development of systematic procedures and tools for developing predictive analytical models based on a physical structure's dynamic response characteristics. It is a multidisciplinary process that involves the ability (1) to define high fidelity physics-based analysis models, (2) to acquire accurate test-derived information for physical specimens using diagnostic experiments, (3) to validate the numerical simulation model by reconciling differences that inevitably exist between the analysis model and the experimental data, and (4) to quantify uncertainties in the final system models and subsequent numerical simulations. The goal of this project was to develop structural system identification techniques and software suitable for both research and production applications in code and model validation.

Sometimes the unpredicted nonlinear behavior of a system results in catastrophic failure. In civil engineering, grandstands at sporting events and concerts may be prone to nonlinear oscillations due to looseness of joints, friction, and crowd movements.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume provide an introduction to well known and established system identification methods for structural health monitoring and to more advanced, state-of-the-art tools, able to tackle the challenges associated with actual implementation. Starting with an overview on fundamental methods, introductory concepts are provided on the general framework of time and frequency domain, parametric and non-parametric methods, input-output or output only techniques. Cutting edge tools are introduced including, nonlinear system identification methods; Bayesian tools; and advanced modal identification techniques (such as the Kalman and particle filters, the fast Bayesian FFT method). Advanced computational tools for uncertainty quantification are discussed to provide a link between monitoring and structural integrity assessment. In addition, full scale applications and field deployments that illustrate the workings and effectiveness of the introduced monitoring schemes are demonstrated.

Book excerpt: Structural system identification is the method of obtaining structural and dynamic mathematical models and improving existing mathematical models using ground vibration test data. The purpose of the subject program was to perform experimental, development, and research work to verify the concepts of structural system identification technology. To accomplish this, system identification techniques were applied to a U.S. Army AH-1G helicopter fuselage to create a mathematical model from ground vibration test data, to improve a reduced model of an existing NASTRAN model of the AH-1G using shake test data, and to test the effectiveness of these new mathematical models in predicting the effects of stiffness and mass changes to the airframe. The results of the program indicate that system identification is a viable and cost-effective technique for developing new models and for improving existing finite-element models of an airframe using ground vibration test data. Book excerpt: The control of vibrating systems is a significant issue in the design of aircraft, spacecraft, bridges and high-rise buildings. This 2001 book discusses the control of vibrating systems, integrating structural dynamics, vibration analysis, modern control and system identification. Integrating these subjects is an important feature in that engineers will need only one book, rather than several texts or courses, to solve vibration control problems. The book begins with a review of basic mathematics needed to understand subsequent material. Chapters then cover more recent and valuable developments in aerospace control and identification theory, including virtual passive control, observer and state-space identification, and data-based controller synthesis. Many practical issues and applications are addressed, with examples showing how various methods are applied to real systems. Some methods show the close integration of system identification and control theory from the state-space perspective, rather than from the traditional input-output model perspective of adaptive control. This text will be useful for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering, as well as for practising engineers.

Book excerpt: Subspace Identification for Linear Systems focuses on the theory, implementation and applications of subspace identification algorithms for linear time-invariant finite- dimensional dynamical systems. These algorithms allow for a fast, straightforward and accurate determination of linear multivariable models from measured input-output data. The theory of subspace identification algorithms is presented in detail. Several chapters are devoted to deterministic, stochastic and combined deterministic-stochastic subspace identification algorithms. For each case, the geometric properties are stated in a main 'subspace' Theorem. Relations to existing algorithms and literature are explored, as are the interconnections between different subspace algorithms. The subspace identification theory is linked to the theory of frequency weighted model reduction, which leads to new interpretations and insights. The implementation of subspace identification algorithms is discussed in terms of the robust and computationally efficient RQ and singular value decompositions, which are well-established algorithms from numerical linear algebra. The algorithms are implemented in combination with a whole set of classical identification algorithms, processing and validation tools in Xmath's ISID, a commercially available graphical user interface toolbox. The basic subspace algorithms in the book are also implemented in a set of Matlab files accompanying the book. An application of ISID to an industrial glass tube manufacturing process is presented in detail, illustrating the power and user-friendliness of the subspace identification algorithms and of their implementation in ISID. The identified model allows for an optimal control of the process, leading to a significant enhancement of the production quality. The applicability of subspace identification algorithms in industry is further illustrated with the application of the Matlab files to ten practical problems. Since all necessary data and Matlab files are included, the reader can easily step through these applications, and thus get more insight in the algorithms. Subspace Identification for Linear Systems is an important reference for all researchers in system theory, control theory, signal processing, automization, mechatronics, chemical, electrical, mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
