Among explicit examples is the docking manoeuvre of two robots in two and three dimensions. The second part of the book deals with the rather recently arising field of molecular robotics. It is particularly here where nature has become a highly influential teacher for the construction of robots. In living biological cells astounding phenomena occur: there are molecules (proteins) that literally walk on polymer strands and transport loads that are heavier than their carriers, or molecules that, by joint action, contract muscles. The book provides the reader with an insight into these phenomena, especially by a detailed theoretical treatment of the molecular mechanism of muscle contraction. At the molecular level, for an appropriate approach the use of quantum theory is indispensable. The authors introduce and use it in a form that avoids all the clumsy calculations of wave-functions. They present a model which is based on an elementary version of quantum field theory and allows taking into account the impact of the surrounding on the quantum mechanical activity of a single molecule. By presenting explicit and pedagogical examples, the reader gets acquainted with the appropriate modelling of the walking behaviour of single molecular robots and their collective behaviour. The further development of multi-robot systems and particularly of molecular robots will require the cooperation of a variety of disciplines. Therefore the book appeals to a wide audience including researchers, instructors, and advanced graduate students.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation we address the topic of self-organization in multi-agent simulation systems from two perspectives: structural and application. Structural self-organization refers to the capability of the simulation system to re-organize its underlying environment structure to meet the simulation's functional and performance requirements. This feature is necessary when simulating a large number of sensor-based virtual agents evolving in a virtual environment that is open (i.e., non-deterministic, dynamic, continuous). If the environment structure is static, the large amount of processing required for virtual agent perception may lead to performance degradation. In this dissertation, we define a model and implementation of a self-organizing environment structure for the execution of a large number of virtual agents on a single machine. The environment self-organizing system consists of micro- and macro-level specialized agents. The specialized agents continuously interact with one another and re-organize the environment structure to ensure that both the functional and performance simulation requirements are met. Application-level self-organization refers to the simulation of a real-world self-organizing system. In this dissertation, we focus on the simulation of a specific category of cyber-physical systems, namely Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS). More precisely, we define Agent-ITS, a multi-layered agent-based self-organizing ITS. Agent-ITS consists of micro- and macro-level components. Micro-level components include context-aware intelligent vehicles and agent-based traffic control devices. Macro-level components are specialized agents whose goal is to inform, monitor, and guide micro-level components. The interactions between micro-and macro- level entities lead to a self-organization of the traffic infrastructure. We have developed MATISSE 2.0 (Multi-Agent based TraffIc Safety Simulation systEm), an agent-based simulation system for the specification and execution of simulation scenarios for Agent-ITS. MATISSE is used to simulate a self-organizing traffic model for urban emergency evacuation. The outcome of this work is a multi-agent simulation system which self-organizes at the structural level while simulating a self-organizing cyber-physical system at the application level.
