Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Cross Sections: Analysis and Design provides valuable information on this key subject covering almost all aspects including theoretical formulation, practical analysis and design computations, various considerations and issues related to cross-sectional behavior, and computer applications for determination of cross-sectional response. The presented approach can handle all complex shapes, material behaviors and configurations. The book starts with a clear and rigorous overview of role of cross-sections and their behavior in overall structural design process. Basic aspects of structural mechanics are reviewed and procedures to determine basic cross-sectional properties, stress and strain distributions, stress resultants and other response parameters, are provided. A brief discussion about the role of material behavior in cross-sectional response is also included. The unified and integrated approach to determine axial-flexural capacity of cross-sections is utilized in development of P-M and M-M interaction diagrams of cross-sections of various shapes. The behavior and design of cross-sections subjected to shear and torsion is also included with emphasis on reinforced concrete sections. Several detailed flow charts are included to demonstrate the procedures used in ACI, BS and Euro codes for design of cross-section subjected to shear and torsion, followed by solved examples. The book also presents the discussion about various factors that can lead to ductile response of cross-sections, especially those made of reinforced concrete. The definition and development of action-deformation curves especially moment-curvature (-) curve is discussed extensively. Various factors such as confinement, rebar distribution and axial load effect on the ductility are shown through examples. The use of moment-curvature curve to compute various section response parameters is also explained though equations and examples. Several typical techniques and materials for retrofitting of cross-sections of reinforced concrete beams, columns and slabs etc. are reviewed. A brief discussion of various informative references related to the evaluation and retrofitting of structures is included for practical applications. Towards the end, the book provides an overview of various software applications available for cross-section design and analysis. A framework for the development of a general-purpose cross-section analysis software, is presented and various features of few commercially available software packages are compared using some example cross-sections. Presents a generalized procedure to compute axial-flexural capacity of cross-sections of any number and configuration of materials Heavily illustrated with schematics, diagrams, and line drawings Includes the convenient approach to develop P-M interaction, M-M Interaction and Moment-Curvature relationships for reinforced concrete cross-sections Provides detailed flowcharts for code-based (ACI, BS and Eurocode) design of reinforced concrete cross-sections subjected to axial-flexural actions as well as shear-torsion. Presents formulae and expressions to compute various commonly used cross-sectional properties of common section shapes Discusses various parameters affecting the ductility of cross-sections and the role of confinement in the behavior reinforced concrete cross-sections Reviews various practical retrofitting techniques to rehabilitate the damaged cross-sections Covers the concepts discussed in main text using various solved and unsolved numerical examples Presents an overview of various computer applications and packages available for analysis of cross-sections Supported by author-developed computer-based apps to be used in conjunction with the practical applications presented in the book

Book excerpt: "Increasing demand on improving the resiliency of modern structures and infrastructure requires ever more critical and complex designs. Therefore, the need for accurate and efficient approaches to assess uncertainties in loads, geometry, material properties, manufacturing processes, and operational environments has increased significantly. Reliability-based techniques help develop more accurate initial guidance for robust design and help to identify the sources of significant uncertainty in structural systems. This book presents an overview of the methods of classical reliability analysis and design most associated with structural reliability. It also introduces more modern methods and advancements, and emphasizes the most useful methods and techniques used in reliability and risk studies, and elaborating their practical applications and limitations rather than detailed derivations. Features: provides a practical and comprehensive overview of reliability and risk analysis and design techniques. Introduces resilient and smart structures/infrastructure that will lead to more reliable and sustainable societies. Considers loss elimination, risk management and life-cycle asset management as related to infrastructure projects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LRFD Steel Design Using Advanced Analysis uses practical advanced analysis to produce almost identical member sizes to those of the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. The main advantage of the advanced analysis method is that tedious and sometimes confusing separate member capacity checks encompassed by the AISC-LRFD specification equations are not necessary. Advanced analysis can sufficiently capture the limit state strength and stability of a structural system and its individual member directly. While the use of elastic analysis is still the norm in engineering practice, a new generation of codes is expected to adopt the advanced analysis methodology in the near future, leading to significant savings in design effort. In recent years, the continued rapid development in computer hardware and software, coupled with an increased understanding of structural behavior, has made it feasible to adopt the advanced analysis techniques for design office use. Drs. Chen and Kim, both experienced and respected engineers, contribute their expertise to this text, which is intended for both the graduate student and the practicing engineer. Previous knowledge of the subject is not necessary, but familiarity with methods of elastic analysis and conventional LRFD design is expected. The advanced analysis in the book is presented in a practical and simple manner, with attention directed to both analysis and design, emphasizing the direct use of the methods in engineering practice. This is a great introduction to an exciting new trend in structural engineering!

This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of the analysis and design process of some hydraulic concrete structures designed to retain and contain aqueous liquid. The first edition discussed six types of structures of different functions, namely: (a) An underground sedimentation tank for sewage treatment.(b) An underground digestion tank for sludge treatment.(c) An underground reservoir to store fresh potable water.(d) An immersed highway tunnel under the river bed.(e) An indoor swimming pool of rectangular shape for public recreation.(f) A gravity dam across a valley for converting the valley into a fresh water reservoir. This Second Edition incorporates another type of hydraulic structure, namely spillway. The spillway structure plays a vital role in regulating the designed reservoir water level to meet the fluctuating demand of water supply for the generation of hydroelectricity, irrigation and water supply purposes in controlling the height of reservoir water level downstream of the river. The spillway structure subjected to seismic hydrodynamic pressure in addition to the hydrostatic pressure, has been analysed and designed in full compliance with Eurocodes EC 2: Part 1–1 and Part 3 as water-retaining structure. The other six structures have been analysed and designed with reference to the relevant clauses of codes of practice prescribed in Eurocodes 2 and BS 8007 and BS 8110. The book is designed to serve as a useful practical guide and a valuable reference for senior undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students specializing in structural design, as well as practising and consulting engineers involved in the design and execution of hydraulic concrete structures.

The structural components are analyzed and designed to conform to the requirements of Eurocodes, [that are similar to Indian Standard Codes] followed throughout the world. In order to elaborate on the concept of prestressed concrete, seven different cases are dealt with in this book to add an analytical approach to the subject. The concepts explained are well-supported with the mathematical derivations and problem formulations. Illustrative figures and tables further help in making understanding of the concepts easier. The book serves as a reference for the undergraduate students of civil and structural engineering.
