Book excerpt: Newly revised and expanded, this classic in book design argues for a non-dogmatic approach, one open to traditional and modern, and symmetrical and assymetrical solutions. Jost Hochuli's work of over 30 years as a book designer is showcased, along with detailed comments by noted designer and critic Robin Kinross."As a designer, Hochuli's main concern is to work out individual solutions for individual books. This book is sure to help anyone who is seeking to develop a considered attitude toward the design and production of the book as a codex." -Fernand Baudin, Logos

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Adams' Building Construction was first published in 1906. It was reprinted several times and revised in 1912 with the addition of 24 pages on reinforced concrete. Beautifully illustrated with over 2,300 engravings and twelve tinted plates, it is reprinted here, unabridged, for the first time in nearly one hundred years. Adams' work sits comfortably alongside the other great construction books of the period: "Rivingtons" (also facsimiled by Donhead) and "Mitchell's". The latter two were actually slightly earlier: "Rivingtons" had already reached its fifth edition by 1906, and "Mitchell's" was in its seventh. Nevertheless Adams was hugely popular, selling over 40,000 copies in its first decade. There seems to be little doubt that its great advantage over its rivals was its format: while the others consisted of several volumes, Adams covered everything in a single one. As such it was more popular with students of building construction preparing for their exams and no doubt they kept it at their side for reference throughout their working lives. Although a great deal has changed in building technology since 1906, there is still much to learn from this volume. Of course it will be particularly useful to those who own a building of the period or who are professionals charged with looking after such buildings. But for everyone it provides an invaluable insight into the thinking of the time and an extraordinary snapshot of building in the Edwardian era. Its great benefit is its clarity.

Book excerpt: Using aspects of structural behaviour, good design practice and effective computational techniques to illustrate the importance of the fundamental theoretical concepts presented, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the analysis and design of structures. The over-riding importance of equilibrium is emphasized and, together with related topics, is the subject of the first five chapters. After deflections have been introduced in chapter six, elastic theory, buckling, plastic theory and energy methods are all introduced and their range of applicability discussed. Numerous case studies are included to help readers gain an appreciation of how theory relates in practice to real life structures. With a broad range of worked examples, questions and references to further reading, Structures is the ideal course text for entry-level students on degree, HNC and HND courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the understanding and use of structural concepts. It provides numerous demonstrations using physical models and practical examples. A significant amount of material, not found in current textbooks, is included to enhance the understanding of structural concepts and stimulate interest in learning, creative thinking and design. This is achieved through: Connecting abstract theory with visual and practical examples; Providing simple illustrative demonstration models, which can be used in conventional class teaching, to capture the essence of the concepts Including associated engineering examples, which demonstrate the application of the concepts and help to bridge the gap between theory and practice Incorporating the development of teaching material and innovative examples relating to structural concepts based on current research work In addition to new models and examples, the second edition of the book provides a third part, Synthesis. This considers the relationships between static and dynamic problems, experimental and theoretical studies, and theory and practice. All of these relationships are linked to structural concepts. This book will be of interest to all engineers, from students to consultants. It will be useful to civil and structural engineering students, including postgraduates, in all years of their courses as well as the more technically-minded architecture students and practising engineers.

Design for Information critically examines other design solutions —current and historic— helping you gain a larger understanding of how to solve specific problems. This book is designed to help you foster the development of a repertoire of existing methods and concepts to help you overcome design problems. Learn the ins and outs of data visualization with this informative book that provides you with a series of current visualization case studies. The visualizations discussed are analyzed for their design principles and methods, giving you valuable critical and analytical tools to further develop your design process. The case study format of this book is perfect for discussing the histories, theories and best practices in the field through real-world, effective visualizations. The selection represents a fraction of effective visualizations that we encounter in this burgeoning field, allowing you the opportunity to extend your study to other solutions in your specific field(s) of practice. This book is also helpful to students in other disciplines who are involved with visualizing information, such as those in the digital humanities and most of the sciences.
