Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to characterize the micromechanical properties of various structural components in asphalt using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The focus of the study was based on nano-indentation experiments performed within a micro-grid of asphalt phases in order to determine micromechanical properties such as stiffness, adhesion and elastic/plastic behavior. The change in microstructure and micromechanical behavior due to oxidative aging of the asphalt was also a primary focus of the study. The experiment was performed with careful consideration of AFM artifacts, which can occur due to factors such as geometry of the cantilever tip, hysteresis, filtering methods and acoustic vibrations. The materials used in this study included asphalts AAB, AAD and ABD from the Materials Reference Library (MRL) of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), chosen due to variations in crude source, chemical composition and elemental analysis for each asphalt type. The analysis of nano-indentation creep measurements corresponding to phase-separated regions ultimately revealed heterogeneous domains in asphalt with different mechanical properties, and oxidative aging was found to induce substantial microstructural change within these domains, including variations in phase structure, phase properties and phase distribution. The form and extent of these changes, however, were different for each asphalt studied. Data analysis and information collected during this study were used for comparisons to existing models and asphalt data, which validated results and established correlations to earlier, related studies. From these comparisons, it was found that data parallels followed expected trends; furthermore, analogous interpretations and distinctions were made between results from this study and the micellar and microstructural models of asphalt. This study of micromechanical properties that govern asphalt behavior has yielded information essential to the advancement of hot mix asphalt (HMA) performance, including a new asphalt "weak zone" hypothesis and a foundation of data for implementation into new and existing asphalt models.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes research being pursued within the Research Unit FOR 2089, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the goal of which is to develop the scientific base for a paradigm shift towards dimensioning, structural realization and maintenance of pavements, and prepare road infrastructure for future requirements. It provides a coupled thermo-mechanical model for a holistic physical analysis of the pavement-tire-vehicle system: based on this model, pavement structures and materials can be optimized so that new demands become compatible with the main goal – durability of the structures and the materials. The development of these new and qualitatively improved modelling approaches requires a holistic procedure through the coupling of theoretical numerical and experimental approaches as well as an interdisciplinary and closely linked handling of the coupled pavement-tire-vehicle system. This interdisciplinary research provides a deeper understanding of the physics of the full system through complex, coupled simulation approaches and progress in terms of improved and, therefore, more durable and sustainable structures.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of asphalt chemo-mechanics requires a basic understanding of the physical properties and chemical composition of asphalt and how these properties are linked to changes in performance induced by chemical modifications. This work uniquely implements the framework of chemo-mechanics by investigating two types of chemical modification processes, natural (oxidative aging) and synthetic (chemical doping) as they relate not only to macro-scale properties of asphalt binder but also to the asphalt microstructure and nanorheology. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the application of atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and the extraction of nano-scale engineering properties, i.e. elastic modulus, relaxation modulus, and surface energy, as a method to predict performance related to the fatigue characteristics of asphalt binders by modeling intrinsic material flaws present amongst phase interfaces. It was revealed that oxidative aging induces substantial microstructural changes in asphalt, including variations in phase structure, phase properties, and phase distribution. It has also been shown that certain asphalt chemical parameters have a consistent and measureable effect on the asphalt microstructure that is observed with AFM. In fact, particular phases that emerged via chemical doping revealed a surprising correlation between oxidative aging and the saturates chemical parameter of asphalt in terms of how they explicitly impact durability and performance of asphalt. By implementing a crack initiation model -- which requires measureable microstructural characteristics as an input parameter -- it was found that microstructural flaws (depending on the extremity) can have a more profound impact on asphalt performance than the properties of the material located between the flaws. It was also discovered by comparing the findings to performance data in the Strategic Highway Research Program's (SHRP's) Materials Reference Library (MRL), that the crack initiation model predicts very similar performance as the SHRP's distress resistance indicators. Overall, this body of work yields improved input values for asphalt prediction models and serves as the basis for ongoing studies in the areas of asphalt chemical mapping, modeling of nano-damage, and nano-modification using AFM. This book was released on 2017 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rheological, chemical and microstructural properties of asphalt binders change with oxidative aging which is accelerated at elevated temperatures. Aging stiffens asphalt binders and increases the embrittlement of asphalt mixtures which would lead to fatigue cracking and eventually pavement failure under repetitive traffic loading. This study explored the feasibility of using antioxidant additives and copolymers with antioxidant agents to retard oxidative aging of asphalt binders. The performance of the additives was evaluated at the binder and mastic levels. The laboratory experiments included two unmodified binders, various antioxidant additives and copolymers, and three aggregate types. The fatigue characteristics of asphalt binders and mastic were determined before and after aging and an aging index was defined to evaluate the effect of the additives on aging. The results demonstrated that certain antioxidants and copolymers such as Redicote AP, Solprene, and Calprene may retard the aging and improve the rheological properties of the asphalt binders. In addition, the results of mastic testing confirmed the favorable effect of certain antioxidants on improving the resistance to fatigue cracking. Furthermore, the type of aggregate was found to influence the rate of aging of asphalt mixtures. Based on the rheological and fracture test results on asphalt binders and mastic, the effect of antioxidants was further investigated and validated at spectroscopic, chemical and microstructural level using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. The spectroscopic analysis with FTIR supported the efficacy of the additives in retarding aging by reducing the carbonyl growth in aged binders. The chemical analysis with GPC confirmed that both Redicote and Solprene were capable of reducing the large molecular size fraction in binders subjected to long-term aging. The image analysis with AFM provided insight on the spatial distribution, surface roughness parameters and micromechanical properties (i.e., adhesion, stiffness) of various phases and the effect of aging on the micro-rheology of antioxidant-modified binders. The last part of this study examined the effect of aging on the viscoelastic response of asphalt mixture using the Prony series representation and a newly developed parameter called aging state variable 'A'. The dynamic modulus test data was used for the analysis. The aging state variable 'A' was found to capture the effect of aging temperature and duration of aging on the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures.

Book excerpt: The micro- and nano-modification of infrastructure materials and the associated multi-scale characterization and simulation has the potential to open up whole new uses and classes of materials, with wide-ranging implications for society. The use of multi-scale characterization and simulation brings the ability to target changes at the very small scale that predictably effect the bulk behavior of the material and thus allowing for the optimization of material behavior and performance. The International RILEM Symposium on Multi-Scale Modeling and Characterization of Infrastructure Materials (Stockholm, June 10-12, 2013) brought together key researchers from around the world to present their findings and ongoing research in this field in a focused environment with extended discussion times. From asphalt to concrete, from chemistry to mechanics, from nano- to macro-scale: the collection of topics covered by the Symposium represents the width and depth of the currently ongoing efforts of developing more sustainable infrastructure materials. Researchers, practitioners, undergraduates and graduate students engaged in infrastructure materials or multi-scale characterization and modeling efforts can use this book as a comprehensive reference, to learn about the currently ongoing research efforts in this field or as an inspiration for new research ideas to enhance the long-term performance of infrastructure materials from a fundamental perspective. The Symposium was held under the auspices of the RILEM Technical Committee on Nanotechnology-Based Bituminous Materials 231-NBM and the Transport Research Board (TRB) Technical Committee on Characteristics of Asphalt Materials AFK20.

Book excerpt: Considering the increased application of high reclaimed asphalt pavement (high RAP) content mixtures, the biorejuvenator attracts increasing attention during the pavement maintenance and rehabilitation process, because this method can be implemented with ease and high effectiveness. However, the aging mechanism of biorejuvenated asphalt at a microscale is not well-understood. The microscale analysis provides a way to acknowledge how the biorejuvenator works. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the physical-structural and chemical changes of biorejuvenated asphalts of different aging levels at a microscale. The methodologies adopted include component analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) In AFM tests, roughness and percentage of bee structures were compared in quantifying the surface morphology changes during aging. Correlation analysis was conducted between the microstructure and component analysis. Youngs modulus and adhesive forces were measured to quantify the micromechanical properties. FTIR spectra were used to investigate the aging mechanism. Results revealed that saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractions of original asphalts and biorejuvenated asphalts changed in the same way during aging. More special variations were found in aged biorejuvenated asphalt, and saturates content was discovered to determine the variation of bee structures percentage. The adhesion forces changed in different ways because of the different original asphalts, and the modulus index demonstrated that biorejuvenated asphalt aged faster than the original asphalt. The FTIR test demonstrated the new aldehyde in the biorejuvenator may be the reason for the accelerated aging of biorejuvenated asphalt.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to use the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to examine the moisture susceptibility and healing characteristics of Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) and compare it with those of conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). To this end, different AFM techniques such as the tapping mode imaging and force spectroscopy experiments were conducted on two types of asphalt binders produced using various WMA technologies as well as a conventional HMA. The considered WMA technologies included: Advera, Evotherm M1, Sasobit, and foamed WMA. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) tests were conducted on the evaluated binders, and AASHTO T283 test was performed on mixtures prepared using those binders. The results of the AFM imaging showed that while the Sasobit additive has reduced the dimensions of the so called 'bee-like' structures within the neat and polymer modified asphalt binders, the other WMA technologies did not have any significant effect on these structures. In addition, the Sasobit resulted in increasing the relative stiffness of dispersed domains containing the 'bee-like' structure in comparison with the flat asphalt matrix for both types of binders, which explained the higher shear modulus values obtained in the DSR test for binders with this WMA additive. The results of the AFM force spectroscopy experiments indicated that all WMA technologies resulted in increasing the nano-scale adhesive forces for both types of asphalt binders prior to moisture conditioning. Advera and foamed WMA had the highest improvement to these forces, while the Sasobit had the least. This might be the cause for the lower indirect tensile strength value that was obtained for the Sasobit mixtures in comparison to other WMA mixtures. The AFM results also showed that the adhesive forces were significantly reduced due to moisture conditioning of the control and WMA 64-22 binders. However, the control and Evotherm WMA binders exhibited the least reduction, while the Advera WMA binder had the highest decrease, which may have contributed to reducing the tensile strength ratio values of the Advera 64-22 mixture. The Sasobit and Advera was also found to reduce the nano-scale cohesive forces within the considered asphalt binders upon moisture conditioning, indicating that it might adversely affect the cohesive bonds within the asphalt binder. The results of the AFM force spectroscopy experiments also suggested that the AASHTO T283 test results primarily depend on the adhesive forces between the aggregate and the binder. The AFM healing experiments indicated that all WMA technologies except the Sasobit resulted in improving the micro-crack closure rate in both types of asphalt binders considered in this study. In addition, only the Sasobit resulted in significant decrease in the cohesive bonding energy; indicating that it might adversely affect the intrinsic healing of the considered asphalt binders. On the contrary, the other WMA technologies improved the -OH cohesive bonding energy and did not significantly influence the -COOH cohesive bonding energy for both asphalt binders. Finally, the results of this study indicated that the AFM is a viable device to study the moisture damage and healing phenomena in asphalt materials.
