Book excerpt: The low velocity impact response of plain autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and FRP/AAC sandwich panels has been investigated. The structural sandwich panels composed of a FRP/AAC combination have shown excellent characteristics in terms of high strength and high stiffness-to-weight ratios. In addition to having adequate flexural and shear properties, the behavior of FRP/AAC sandwich panels needs to be investigated when subjected to impact loading. During service, the structural members in the building structures are subjected to impact loading that varies from object-caused impact, blast due to explosions, to high velocity impact of debris during tornados, hurricanes, or storms. Low velocity impact (LVI) testing serves as a means to quantify the allowable impact energy that the structure is able to withstand and to assess the typical failure modes encountered during this type of loading. The objectives of this chapter are: to study the response of plain AAC and CFRP/AAC sandwich structures to low velocity impact and to assess the damage performance of the panels; to study the effect of FRP laminates on the impact response of CFRP/AAC panels; to study the effect of the processing method (hand layup versus VARTM) and panel stiffness on the impact response of the hybrid panels. Impact testing was conducted using an Instron drop-tower testing machine. Experimental results showed a significant influence of CFRPs laminates on the energy absorbed and peak load of the CFRP/AAC panels. Further, a theoretical analysis was conducted to predict the energy absorbed by the CFRP/AAC sandwich panel using the energy balance model, and the results found were in good accordance with the experimental ones.

Book excerpt: This chapter discusses design for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)/autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) sandwich panels for structural applications. The chapter first presents the finite element analysis (FE) of FRP/AAC panels. The FE results are compared with the experimental results showing acceptable agreement. Next, analytical models are presented to predict the deflection and strength of the panels. Finally, design graphs have been developed to help in designing the floor and wall panels made from FRP/AAC panels. Also, those panels have been compared to the commercially used reinforced AAC panels demonstrating that FRP/AAC panels offer a relatively cost-effective solution for longer life cycle.

Book excerpt: Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) has emerged in recent years as an attractive new high performance cement-based composite. Textiles can significantly improve the mechanical behavior of cement matrices under static and dynamic conditions, and give superior tensile strength, toughness, ductility, energy absorption and protection against environmental degrading influences. Flexibility with fabric production methods enables the control of fabric and yarn geometry. This, along with the ability to incorporate into the fabric a range of yarns of different types and performances, as well as cement matrix modifications, enables design of the composite to a wide range of needs. The book is intended to provide a comprehensive treatment of TRC, covering the basic fundamentals of the composite material itself and the principles governing its performance on a macro-scale as a component in a structure. It provides in-depth treatment of the fabric, methods for production of the composite, the micro-mechanics with special attention to the role of bonding and microstructure, behavior under static and dynamic loading, sustainability, design, and the applications of TRC composites.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The primary objective of this chapter is first to introduce and demonstrate the application of thermoplastic (woven glass reinforced polypropylene) in the design of modular fiber-reinforced bridge decks, and next the development of jackets for confining concrete columns against compression and impact loading. The design concept and manufacturing processes of the thermoplastic bridge deck composite structural system are presented by recognizing the structural demands required to support highway traffic. Then the results of the small-scale static cylinder tests and the impact tests of concrete columns are presented, demonstrating that thermoplastic reinforcement jackets act to restrain the lateral expansion of the concrete that accompanies the onset of crushing, maintaining the integrity of the core concrete, and enabling much higher compression strains (compared to CFRP composite wraps) to be sustained by the compression zone before failure occurs.

Book excerpt: Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures results in significant repair and rehabilitation costs. In the past several years, new fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars have been introduced as an alternative to steel reinforcing bars. Several national and international organizations have recently developed standards based on preliminary test results. However, limited validation testing has been performed on the recommendations of these standards. High variability of the tensile properties, degradation of tensile strength, direct shear capacity, predicted deflections due to creep, cracking behavior of FRP-reinforced concrete flexural members, bond behavior and development length, and effects of thermal expansion on cracking of FRP reinforced concrete have all been reported, but are areas that need further investigation and validation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of glass FRP reinforcing bars and provide recommendations on the design and construction of concrete structures containing these bar types with regard to the areas described. The recently developed ACI 440 design guidelines were analyzed and modifications proposed.

The main reason for incorporating fibres into a cement matrix is to improve the cracking deformation characteristics, increasing not only the toughness, impact and tensile strength, but also eliminating temperature and shrinkage cracks. Several different types of fibres have been used to reinforce cement-based materials. This chapter briefly discusses the characteristics of fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC), reporting the effect of the fibres on the physico-chemical and mechanical properties. It also presents some of the recent research and future perspectives of FRC.

Book excerpt: This chapter presents a systematic approach for material characterization, analysis, and design of all-fiber-reinforced polymer or plastic (FRP) composite structures. The suggested ‘bottom-up’ analysis concept is applied throughout the procedure, from materials/microstructures, to macro components, to structural members, and finally to structural systems, thus providing a systematic analysis methodology for all-FRP composite structures. The systematic approach described in this chapter can be used efficiently to analyze and design FRP shapes and bridge systems and also develop new design concepts for all composite structures.

Book excerpt: This chapter briefly discusses the performance and durability of bonded composite systems used for on-site rehabilitation of timber and concrete structures. In spite of some recent developments, the exploitation of their full potential is still often restrained by the lack of structural design guidance, standards for durability assessment and on-site acceptance testing. Therefore, this chapter provides a review of current understanding on the use of hybrid bonded composite systems on the construction site in terms of structural repair, reinforcement, and seismic retrofit. It focuses on the requirements and practical difficulties in the work on-site with regards to the performance and durability of the rehabilitated structure, the characteristics and requirements that must be fulfilled by structural adhesives and advanced polymer composite materials, and the subsequent need for quality control and in-service monitoring. It also highlights the factors affecting performance and durability of bonded joints. Finally, a general overview of the research needs and a bibliography giving references to more detailed information on this topic is given.

Book excerpt: The present numerical study investigates the application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets to improve strength and to explore the potential ductility enhancement of concrete and masonry structural components. Consequently, composite sheets used varied from normal to hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymers and their applications were modified from completely to sequentially bonded sheets. Sudden debonding of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets from concrete members is one major concern. The present research investigates the bond stress distribution in CFRP-concrete interface during debonding failure and proposes an effective sequentially bonding CFRP sheets layout to improve load carrying capacity along with ductility. Previous studies revealed that the application of FRP sheets in strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams has improved their load carrying capacity but not the ductility. In this study, strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with hybrid CFRP sheets was proposed to enhance the load carrying capacity and change the brittle mode to ductile failure. Additionally, unreinforced masonry shear walls with openings were retrofitted with CFRP sheets to restore the loss in stiffness and flexural strength due to openings. To perform these investigations, complex three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) models of structural elements such as concrete blocks, RC beams and unreinforced masonry shear walls strengthened with CFRP sheets were developed. Finite element results of proposed models are as follows: 1. The FEA model of CFRP-concrete block double shear test was able to provide a complete set of stress and strain distributions along the bond length which was not possible to obtain experimentally. FEA simulation was able to reveal the distribution of strain amplitude, providing guidance for accurate placement of strain gauges at critical locations during experiment. 2. FEA model of CFRP-concrete single bond test with sequential bonding was able to provide the changes in bond stress distribution compared to fully-bonded CFRP-concrete single bond test model. Some of the sequentially bonded FRP-concrete block models gained ductility along with load carrying capacity. 3. Through the retrofit of RC beam with hybrid instead of normal CFRP sheets the mode of failure changed from brittle flexural-shear debonding to ductile gradual rupture of hybrid CFRP sheets. 4. Masonry shear wall with vertical rectangular opening outperformed the masonry shear walls with square, circular and horizontal rectangular openings in terms of stiffness and lateral in-plane load carrying capacity. Masonry shear walls with multiple openings outperformed the single opening in terms of stiffness and lateral in-plane load carrying capacity. Regardless of the opening shapes, the proposed CFRP sheets layout around the opening of masonry shear walls was effective in improving their stiffness and strength.
