Book excerpt: The objective of the work reported herein was to determine the strength and stress-strain characteristics of rocks of four types under various rates of loading. This was accomplished by conducting slow (specimens loaded at rates of less than 2,251 psi/sec) and rapid (specimen loaded at rates greater than 2,251 psi/sec) unconfined compression tests, tensile splitting tests, and triaxial compression tests utilizing confining pressures ranging from 250 to 5,000 psi. Granite, basalt, limestone, and tuff from the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site, Mercury, Nevada, were used in this program. Nondestructive tests such as specific gravity, porosity, and compressional wave velocity were conducted on all specimens to determine homogeneity of each rock. (Author).

Book Synopsis ENGINEERING IN ROCKS FOR SLOPES, FOUNDATIONS AND TUNNELS by : T. RAMAMURTHY

This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ever-increasing developmental activities as diverse as the construction of dams, roads, tunnels, underground powerhouses and storage facilities, petroleum exploration and nuclear repositories, a more comprehensive and updated understanding of rock mass is essential for civil engineers, engineering geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum and mining engineers. Though some contents of this vast subject are included in under-graduate curriculum, there are full-fledged courses on Rock Mechanics/Rock Engineering in postgraduate programmes in civil engineering and mining engineering. Much of the material presented in this book is also taught to geology and geophysics students. In addition, the book is suitable for short courses conducted for teachers, practising engineers and engineering geologists. This book, with contributions from a number of authors with expertise and vast experience in various areas of rock engineering, gives an in-depth analysis of the multidimensional aspects of the subject. The text covers a wide range of topics related to engineering behaviour of rocks and rock masses, their classifications, interpretation of geological mapping of joints through stereographic projection, in situ stress measurements, laboratory and field tests, stability of rock slopes, foundations of structures, including dams and support systems for underground excavations. The Third Edition of the book is further enriched with the addition of a number of case histories in which the analyses and designs were carried out by adopting rock mass parameters as per RMR, Q or GSI. The consequence of such an approach is critically examined. With the adoption of parameters from joint factor, excellent performance prediction has been demonstrated for anisotropic rocks and tunnel. Various expressions developed for Kn and Ks for different conditions are included for adoption in numerical analyses. When dilatancy component is separated, the scale effect on shear response is insignificant. This edition provides a comprehensive understanding of rock mass response and enables students to tackle rock engineering problems more confidently and realistically, and therefore it will be of immense benefit to students, teachers, professionals and designers alike.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Rock Physics written by Nikolai Bagdassarov and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock physics encompasses practically all aspects of solid and fluid state physics. This book provides a unified presentation of the underlying physical principles of rock physics, covering elements of mineral physics, petrology and rock mechanics. After a short introduction on rocks and minerals, the subsequent chapters cover rock density, porosity, stress and strain relationships, permeability, poroelasticity, acoustics, conductivity, polarizability, magnetism, thermal properties and natural radioactivity. Each chapter includes problem sets and focus boxes with in-depth explanations of the physical and mathematical aspects of underlying processes. The book is also supplemented by online MATLAB exercises to help students apply their knowledge to numerically solve rock physics problems. Covering laboratory and field-based measurement methods, as well as theoretical models, this textbook is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in rock physics. It will also make a useful reference for researchers and professional scientists working in geoscience and petroleum engineering.
