Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stray Leaves From a Physician's Portfolio Most physicians are peripatetics and stroll from time to time from the professional Lyceum into the shady walks that branch out of it in so many directions. In such excursions I have freely indulged, and the records of a few of them are here collected. I cannot plead that it is the persuasions of friends that have induced me to publish or republish these heterogeneous essays and addresses. Nothing of the kind. They survive because of my personal concern that they should be rescued from the oblivion of bygone magazines and from crumbling in the domestic muniment chest of discarded papers, together with the impression - well-or ill-founded - that some of them may contain something worthy of remembrance. Their preparation has given occupation in leisure hours and relaxation amidst anxious duties, and it is hoped that their perusal may interest their readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scattered Leaves From a Physician's Diary Learning how to wait is the initiatory experience in the career of every physician. During my apprenticeship to patience as a novitiate in medicine, time passed slowly, and I applied myself assiduously to the study of complicated diseases, which will occur perhaps once, if at all, in the professional life of a busy physician. The ordinary diseases, like dyspepsia, bronchitis, colic, and even toothache, were dismissed without even a moiety of attention. Much to my sorrow, I soon learned that only the rich and influential physician could afford to diagnose an obscure disease and call it by its technical term. If an unknown physician diagnoses a case of toothache, he tells the sufferer it is toothache, but the opulent consultant is privileged to call it odontalgia, and regulates his honorarium accordingly. Soon I got to be very busy practicing economy, and I purchased a book, entitled "How to Live on Five Dollars a Week." I found the book eminently practical, and could have followed its precepts very comfortably if I only had the five dollars. One day when the gastric vacuum was becoming pronounced, and when the coloration of my feelings was assuming a cerulean aspect, Mrs. Dennis Mulcahy, one of my neighbors, entered the waiting-room of my office. I saw Mrs. Mulcahy through the key-hole. I was so perturbed that I hardly knew what to do. This was evidently to be my first patient. I didn't want tolose her, nor did I deem it proper to admit her at once into my consultation-room. I coughed loudly to assure here that I was in, and then I walked stealthily around to the door of the waiting-room, locking it from the outside to be sure that Mrs. Mulcahy would not escape. Then 1 hurriedly rearranged my room. Taking from the book-case some ponderous volumes, I distributed them carelessly about my writing desk. I gathered up all the cigar stumps, and I gave special prominence to a skull which had done duty for over twenty years in contributing food to a friend of mine, who had died a confirmed gourmand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stray Leaves Bishop Thirlwall once told a friend whom he met at the Athenaeum that he had spent the whole day in writing letters. He had written thirty. "Three of them," he added, "were important, and it was necessary that I should write them. The rest might have been written by my butler." That great intellect, which had no superior, if indeed it had an equal, on either the episcopal or the judicial bench, was frittered away on an infinite deal of nothing, and an interminable series of nobodies. Yet Dr. Thirlwall had a comparatively small diocese, containing a very large proportion of Dissenters. It did not kill him. He lived to a green old age, and died in an honoured retirement. Far different was the fate of Dr. Creighton, who broke down as a racehorse would break down if he were put to draw a coal-truck. Sydney Smith's favourite nightmare was to be preached to death by wild curates. One might say without flippancy that Bishop Creighton was bored to death by fussy incumbents. Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.
