Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender, Communication, and the Leadership Gap is the sixth volume in the Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice series. This cross-disciplinary series, from the International Leadership Association, enhances leadership knowledge and improves leadership development of women around the world. The purpose of this volume is to highlight connections between the fields of communication and leadership to help address the problem of underrepresentation of women in leadership. Readers will profit from the accessible writing style as they encounter cutting-edge scholarship on gender and leadership. Chapters of note cover microaggressions, authentic leadership, courageous leadership, inclusive leadership, implicit bias, career barriers and levers, impression management, and the visual rhetoric of famous women leaders. Because women in leadership positions occupy a contested landscape, one goal of this collection is to clarify the contradictory communication dynamics that occur in everyday interactions, in national and international contexts, and when leadership is digital. Another goal is to illuminate the complexities of leadership identity, intersectionality, and perceptions that become obstacles on the path to leadership. The renowned thinkers and scholars in this volume hail from both Leadership and Communication disciplines. The book begins with Sally Helgesen and Brenda J. Allen. Helgesen, co-author of The Female Vision: Women’s Real Power at Work, discusses the two-fold challenge women face as they struggle to articulate their visions. Her chapter offers six practices women can use to relieve this struggle. Allen, author of the groundbreaking book, Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity, discusses the implications of how inclusive leadership matters to women and what it means to think about women as people who embody both dominant and non-dominant social identity categories. She then offers practical communication strategies and an intersectional ethic to the six signature traits of highly inclusive leaders. Each chapter includes practical solutions from a communication and leadership perspective that all readers can employ to advance the work of equality. Some solutions will be of use in organizational contexts, such as leadership development and training initiatives, or tools to change organizational culture. Some solutions will be of use to individuals, such as how to identify and respond productively to micro-aggressions or how to be cautious rather than optimistic about practicing authentic leadership. The writing in this volume also reflects a range of styles, from in-depth scholarship that produces new knowledge to shorter forums that feature interesting ideas worth considering.

Book excerpt: Upon request of the FEMM committee, the study evaluates the Strategy for Equality between women and men 2010-2015 as a contribution towards achieving Beijing Platform for Action goals and provides indications on the future post-2015 multiannual policy framework. The study assesses the extent to which the Strategy was appropriate and comprehensive enough to contribute to the BPfA implementation and, more in general, to gender equality at the European and international level, and whether the planned objectives have been effectively met. It also provides practical and specific recommendations on possible improvements for the future Strategy.

Book excerpt: Gender mainstreaming is the current international approach to promoting equality between women and men.It is based on the recognition that gender inequality operates at all levels and in all sectors of society, and thus needs to be addressed in the mainstream. It aims to ensure that women and men benefit equitably from all that society has to offer, and are equally empowered to affect its governance and decisions. The Gender Management System (GMS) is a holistic and system-wide approach to gender mainstreaming developed by the Commonwealth, for the use of governments in partnership with other stakeholders including civil society and the private sector. The GMS is a comprehensive network of structures, mechanisms and processes to enable governments and other organisations to contribute to gender equality through all policy-making, planning and activities. This Quick Guide has been produced to assist governments and other stakeholders using gender-sensitive indicators in the context of gender mainstreaming. It is an abridged version of the GMS publication Using Gender-Sensitive Indicators: A Reference Manual for Governments and Other Stakeholders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender has traditionally proven to be a ‘blind spot’ for new institutionalists. This book bring gender to the fore as a critical aspect of institutions and opens up new avenues to interrogate the dynamics of power and change. Casting its empirical lens on the EU, where institutional efforts to realize gender equality are quite pronounced, the book interrogates attempts to bring about more ‘gender just’ polities – supranationally, nationally, and more locally. The book takes a ‘best case’ scenario – with explicit transformative aims to the social (gendered) order – in order to illuminate how institutions and their gendering, help and hinder institutional change. In doing so, it aims to: 1) consolidate and expand the theoretical ‘toolkit’ in terms of synergies between feminism and new institutionalism’s various strands; and 2) bring it to bear on the trajectory of Europe’s gender equality agenda towards better understanding the institutional and institutionalized challenges to redressing gender inequalities.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key purpose of this study is to assist DG Justice and Consumers in reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of the Strategy for equality between women and men 2010-2015 as implemented up to June 2014 in order to draw lessons for a possible new policy framework. The study covers all six priority areas of the Strategy and provides: i. assessment of the achievements of the Strategy in relation to its objectives in the six priority areas and their relevance in addressing current needs (Chapter 2); ii. discussion of the role of the Strategy according to key stakeholders and whether it is perceived as a coherent framework (Chapter 3); iii. assessment of the role of funding for gender equality by dedicated budget support in the previous multiannual financial framework (2007- 2013) and the prospects for the 2014-2020 period (Chapter 4); iv.^concluding remarks on the Strategy's main strengths, weaknesses and value added, as well as some indications emerging from the analysis and stakeholders indications in relation to any new policy framework (Chapter 5). The assessment is based on a desk review of existing documents, as well as the results of an on-line survey conducted by the Commission's services between June and August 2015 among the members of the High Level Group for Gender Mainstreaming. Given the nature of the assessment carried out and the necessity to take into account all the other intervening factors (in primis the financial end economic crisis and the austerity measures) that may account for the changes that have occurred in gender equality conditions, it is not possible to assess the contribution of the Strategy to reaching the ultimate expected outcomes.^For these reasons, the assessment conducted focuses mainly on the Strategy outputs and immediate outcomes, and provides a qualitative indication of the extent to which the Strategy could contribute to achieving its objectives. The analysis of stakeholders' perceptions provides additional inputs for the final assessment.

Book excerpt: A timely feminist intervention on gender, communication, and women’s human rights The Handbook on Gender, Communication, and Women's Human Rights engages contemporary debates on women’s rights, democracy, and neoliberalism through the lens of feminist communication scholarship. The first major collection of its kind published in the COVID-19 era, this unique volume frames a wide range of issues relevant to the gender and communication agenda within a human rights framework. An international panel of feminist academics and activists examines how media, information, and communication systems contribute to enabling, ignoring, questioning, or denying women's human and communication rights. Divided into four parts, the Handbook covers governance and policy, systems and institutions, advocacy and activism, and content, rights, and freedoms. Throughout the text, the contributors demonstrate the need for strong feminist critiques of exclusionary power structures, highlight new opportunities and challenges in promoting change, illustrate both the risks and rewards associated with digital communication, and much more. Offers a state-of-the-art exploration of the intersection between gender, communication, and women's rights Addresses both core and emerging topics in feminist media scholarship and research Discusses the vital role of communication systems and processes in women's struggles to claim and exercise their rights Analyzes how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated structures of inequality and intensified the spread of disinformation Explores feminist-based concepts and approaches that could enrich communication policy at all levels Part of the Global Handbooks in Media and Communication Research series, TheHandbook of Gender, Communication, and Women's Human Rights is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in media studies, communication studies, cultural studies, journalism, feminist studies, gender studies, global studies, and human rights programs at institutions around the world. It is also an invaluable resource for academics, researchers, policymakers, and civil society and human rights activists.
