Book Synopsis The Essay by : Paul Heilker

Book excerpt: Calling for a radical reexamination of the traditional foundation of composition instruction--the thesis/support form, this book argues that the essay, with its informality, conversational tone, meditative mood, and integration of form and content, is better suited to developmental, epistemological, ideological, and feminist rhetorical pespectives. The book first traces the origins of the essay in the 16th century. It then examines 20th-century theories of the form to illustrate what constitutes the fundamental qualities of the essay--epistemological skepticism, anti-scholasticism, and the use of an "anti-Ciceronian chrono-logic" organization ("we can only have one thought in our heads at a time, one thought leads to another, and time flows in only one direction"). This leads to writing that is well developed and well ordered, consistent, and methodical. The book shapes a "rehabilitative theory" of the essay by applying the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin to advance a conception of the essay as a centrifugal, novelistic, dialogic, and carnivalesque form. The book then examines the practice of some contemporary essayists--Aldous Huxley, Joan Didion, Charles Simic, Alice Walker, Scott Russell Sanders, Gretel Ehrlich, and Joseph Epstein. Extensive, detailed accounts of assignments and classroom activities on the essay form that have been used effectively with students are offered. Several student essays are presented in their entirety and analyzed in the book. An afterword and appendixes on sources and works cited conclude the book. (NKA)

Book excerpt: Framed by historic developments-from the Open Admissions movement of the 1960s and 1970s to the attacks on remediation that intensified in the 1990s and beyond-BASIC WRITING traces the arc of these large social and cultural forces as they have shaped and reshaped the field. GEORGE OTTE and REBECCA WILLIAMS MLYNARCZYK balance fidelity to the past with present relevance, local concerns with (presumptively) global knowledge, personal judgment with (apparent) objectivity. BASIC WRITING circles back on the same general story, looking for different themes or seeing the same themes from different perspectives. What emerges is a gestalt of Basic Writing that will give readers interested in its history, self-definition, pedagogy, or research a sense of the important trends and patterns. Otte and Mlynarczyk make research trajectories clear without oversimplifying them or denying the undeniable blurring, dissensus, and differential development that characterizes the field. GEORGE OTTE is a member of the doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center in the PhD Programs in English, Urban Education, and Interactive Technology and Pedagogy. He served as coeditor of the JOURNAL OF BASIC WRITING from 1996 to 2002. He is the coauthor with Nondita Mason of WRITERS' ROLES: ENACTMENTS OF THE PROCESS (Harcourt, 1994) and, with Linda Palumbo, of CASTS OF THOUGHT: WRITING IN AND AGAINST TRADITION (Macmillan, 1990). REBECCA WILLIAMS MLYNARCZYK has taught basic writing at the City University of New York since 1974. She is currently professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and Kingsborough Community College, where she codirects the ESL program. She is the author of CONVERSATIONS OF THE MIND: THE USES OF JOURNAL WRITING FOR SECOND-LANGUAGE LEARNERS (Erlbaum) and the coauthor, with Steven Haber, of IN OUR OWN WORDS: STUDENT WRITERS AT WORK (Cambridge). She has served as coeditor of the JOURNAL OF BASIC WRITING since 2003.

Book excerpt: Lord, if you get me out of this misery, I will serve you all my life! “What was once a beautiful garden view from my doorway was now strewn with decaying bodies. The overwhelming sense of helplessness exploded inside me as I listened to the screams of injured young men. It almost seemed like dying was a much easier option than fighting and running to stay alive.” As a young refugee Sam Georgis made a deal with God. Little did he know, in the midst of missiles, bombshells, bullets, and the overarching sound of helicopters and tanks, that his prayer was heard...and would one day lead him to heaven itself! “I was totally mesmerized at the wonderment of the vision standing in front of me, and as He spoke to me, it was as if I was frozen in time. His voice was strong and clear, filled with love and compassion as He communicated His message to me and enquired, “Do you really want to see heaven?" Follow Sam Georgis as he takes you on a journey of ten trips to heaven. Visitations that not only amazed him, but promise to amaze and inspire you! • The Heavenly Visitation and Prophecy • The Holy City • The Rapture • Lessons of Wisdom in Heaven • A special Word of Revival for Australia • The Power of Almighty God • The Beauty of Jesus
