Simon Blackfyre has no memory or recollection of where he was born and who he really is. The King and Queen of Miradora have died under strange circumstances. A new ruler must be chosen but Simon has never heard of "The Rites of Succession". Trapped in the lowest caste of society he couldn't care less until the powerful Lord Lionsbury and his giant friend, Mr. Byrch, arrive unannounced at the Pumberton's farm in the sleepy town of Grimsby where Simon's dark and perilous adventure begins. After a dangerous trek to Farrhaven to undergo strenuous training, Simon is chosen as a protector of the Evermere family by the wise and compassionate Holy Seer, Lady Zaphora Murik of Wraithburn. Marcus, the eldest Evermere brother, is a contender to the throne in competition against three other young nobles including the arrogant and ruthless Callor Tiberion who believes that he alone is entitled to wear the crown no matter how it is won. Simon survives a potentially deadly initiation rite which reveals the return of a mysterious demonic race, the Choldath, hell-bent on exacting ancient revenge on the people of Miradora and all kingdoms of the earth. Simon and his new friends, including Rachel, come under increasing attacks at Farrhaven both from within and without as their enemies test their defenses and their loyalties. Simon's thrilling odyssey continues through a brutal maze of supernatural deceptions, bloody betrayals, and heartbreaking loss until he finds the courage to stand and fight for what is right and true while sinister forces gather in preparation for a war that will decide the final destiny of the world. Journey deeper with our reluctant hero and his friends as they discover the frightening and magical world of SIMON BLACKFYRE AND THE STORMS OF DESTINY, A. J. Callen's first novel in the epic SIMON BLACKFYRE sword and sorcery fantasy trilogy.

Book excerpt: Storm Lake - Is it Mayberry or Middle Earth? To say I was having a bad day would be like saying Katrina dropped a little rain on the Gulf Coast. My name is Tempest Pomeroy. I'm a mail carrier in Destiny, Louisiana, and a Paramortal like my family. Or I'm supposed to be. If I didn't have a few little talents, I'd think I was adopted. Before work, I discovered my brother's amphora missing from the mantle- that's genie bottle to you mere-mortals. On my first delivery, a handsome scantily clad doctor triggered some sort of hallucination when we touched. Pheromones? Then my customer had a stroke while reading me the riot act over a piece of mail, but I saved the old grouch with a zap of my Zeus juice, just before Destiny's hunky new sheriff showed up. He made another appearance when the owner of Flowers by Dick filed a complaint against me for dropping a seventy-five pound box on his foot. Yeah, I did it, but it was kind of an accident. He put his hand where it didn't belong and I- sorta dropped it. Things went downhill from there. I discovered a dead body in the clubhouse and rescued my brother's bottle from a locker, bashing it in with a Greg Norman wedge. And wouldn't you know - him again. I've denied my heritage as a Tempestaerie for too long. Now, my mother's out of pocket, my brother's missing and the sheriff thinks one of us is guilty of murder. Is it any wonder I'm calling this the worst M.A.L.E day of my life? Oh, and the sheriff? He thought he'd settled in a normal small town to raise his teenage daughter. Like Mayberry. We'll see how that turns out? Things better get better soon cause my world's going Storm Crazy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Museum of African American History Stone Book Award 2020 Lillian Smith Book Award Finalist, 2020 Pauli Murray Book Prize For generations, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been essential institutions for the African American community. Their nurturing environments not only provided educational advancement but also catalyzed the Black freedom struggle, forever altering the political destiny of the United States. In this book, Jelani M. Favors offers a history of HBCUs from the 1837 founding of Cheyney State University to the present, told through the lens of how they fostered student activism. Favors chronicles the development and significance of HBCUs through stories from institutions such as Cheyney State University, Tougaloo College, Bennett College, Alabama State University, Jackson State University, Southern University, and North Carolina A&T. He demonstrates how HBCUs became a refuge during the oppression of the Jim Crow era and illustrates the central role their campus communities played during the civil rights and Black Power movements. Throughout this definitive history of how HBCUs became a vital seedbed for politicians, community leaders, reformers, and activists, Favors emphasizes what he calls an unwritten "second curriculum" at HBCUs, one that offered students a grounding in idealism, racial consciousness, and cultural nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane McManus Storm Cazneau (1807-1878) was a complex person who died at sea the way she lived--at the center of a storm of controversy. Whether as Aaron Burr's mistress, land speculating in Texas, behind enemy lines during the Mexican War, filibustering for Cuba or Nicaragua, promoting Mexican revolution from a dugout in Eagle Pass, or urging free blacks to emigrate to the Dominican Republic, Cazneau seldom took the easy path. She foresaw a nation with equal rights for all in a world in which representative government was the norm rather than the exception. As a journalist, an advisor to national political figures, and publicist, she helped shape United States domestic and foreign policy from the mid-1840s into the 1870s. Cazneau's most unique contribution was as a staff writer for John L. O'Sullivan, editor of the United States Magazine and Democratic Review, where she described the mission of the United States as "Manifest Destiny," thereby coining one of the most significant and influential phrases in American political history. A single parent and working mother, Cazneau was not a women's rights woman who agitated for suffrage. She ridiculed the Seneca Falls housewives' complaints because real oppression existed for women in the factories, in the needle trades, on Indian reservations, and in the Caribbean. Cazneau advised working women to educate themselves and take better-paying men's clerical jobs. Although it appeared that her schemes and speculations failed, many of the policies she advocated eventually succeeded. She promoted the need for a steam navy and merchant marine fifty years before Alfred T. Mahan. She wrote about the problems of the working class sixty years before it became a Progressive crusade, advocated agrarian reform fifty years before Populists took up the cause, and assisted republican revolutionaries a hundred years before the United States awoke to the needs of the ordinary people in the sister republics of the Western Hemisphere. Cazneau's letters, books, journal, and newspaper articles leave little more than a hint of her intelligence and conversational wit, a mere suggestion of her sexuality and explosive temper, a glimpse of her courage and spirituality, and a trace of her sense of humor reflected in the sparkle of violet eyes beneath raven hair and a dark complexion that was her distinguishing trait. She was dedicated to the expansion of republican government; she had a special place in her heart for the abandoned and neglected, whether persons or animals; and she had a deep and abiding love for her country and faith in its people and in its future.
