Book excerpt: Author's NOTICE (From the First Volume) As the date of the original publication (for the most part in American magazines) is attached to each of the Tales comprised in these volumes, the reader will see that the greater number appeared for the first time many years ago-that the oldest, indeed, are of an almost venerable age; but it is proper to add that these earlier stories have been in every case minutely revised and corrected- many passages being wholly rewritten. In the matter of revision, in short, they have been very freely handled; some of the proper names have been altered, and in one instance the title of the story. The first and third Tales in the first volume are the only ones first presented in an English periodical (The English Illustrated Magazine), all the others (the latest of which is of 1878) saw the light on the other side of the Atlantic. It had come to the writer's knowledge that they were being to some extent "hunted up," and there seemed to be good reasons for anticipating further research by re-introducing them. He is confident that they have gained, not lost, freshness by the process of retouching to which they have been subjected. February 1885. * * * * * The stories in this volume: The Author of 'Beltraffio' Pandora The Path of Duty A Light Man A Day of Days

This book was released on 1999-01-11 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes overshadowed by his work as a novelist, Henry James’s short fiction is an astonishing achievement, a triumph of inventiveness and restless curiosity. This Library of America volume (the third of five volumes devoted to his short fiction) includes among its seventeen stories some of James’s greatest masterpieces. “The Aspern Papers” is a stunning novella about emotional ruthlessness in the service of literary scholarship. “The Pupil” is a densely suggestive account of the moral perplexities underlying the relationship between an impoverished tutor and a young invalid. “The Lesson of the Master” is an intricate study of ambition, disappointment, and the demands of a life devoted to art. “Brooksmith” is a moving portrait of a house servant and “Sir Edmund Orme” is an enthralling ghost story. In “The Liar,” a painter attempts to force a former love to admit that her present husband is a pathological liar; in “The Patagonia,” a young man cavalierly flirts with a young woman en route to her wedding in England, with disastrous consequences. More than half the stories within this volume are available in no other edition. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Edition of the Complete Fiction of Henry James provides, for the first time, a scholarly edition of a major writer whose work continues to be read, quoted, adapted and studied. One of James's strangest works, The Sacred Fount, explores ideas of sexual desire and power in an English country house setting. The novel aroused considerable critical bewilderment and hostility on its original publication in 1901 but was retrieved by a subsequent generation of critics who found its ambiguity and stylistic elaboration an instance of James's 'mastery' and an early example of literary modernism. This is the first critical edition of James' landmark text and is supported by a full critical apparatus including introduction, notes, glossary, textual variants and bibliography. The volume will be of interest to researchers, scholars and advanced students of Henry James, and of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British and American fiction and literature.
