Book excerpt: Stories of Our Longmont Parks is a pictorial history of parks built in Longmont, Colorado from 1871 to 2020. The book includes all neighborhood and community parks built during this 150 year period. The chronology of their development is arranged into three eras with context given to the influences of each period. Historical and recent photographs are included as well as information on who or what the park is named for and stories of their development. Stories told by those who helped in the park's development are included. As of 2020, the City of Longmont has developed thirty-one Community and Neighborhood Parks. The original five parks were envisioned by the Chicago-Colorado Colony, who founded Longmont in 1871. Included in this early era are two other parks built before the 1930s. A lull in development occurred between the 1930s and the 1960s when the Baby Boom helped spur the next era of development. This period lasted until the 1990s. The last era describes work done in the past thirty years. Taken from historical archives and personal stories, this book creates an important record and understanding of the public parks within the community. This collection of stories provides a glimpse into Longmont's park history and the people who were part of their creation.

Book excerpt: In this #1 international bestseller, a young woman leaves everything behind to work as a librarian in a remote French village, where she finds her outlook on life and love challenged in every way. Prudencia Prim is a young woman of intelligence and achievement, with a deep knowledge of literature and several letters after her name. But when she accepts the post of private librarian in the village of San Ireneo de Arnois, she is unprepared for what she encounters there. Her employer, a book-loving intellectual, is dashing yet contrarian, always ready with a critique of her cherished Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott. The neighbors, too, are capable of charm and eccentricity in equal measure, determined as they are to preserve their singular little community from the modern world outside. Prudencia hoped for friendship in San Ireneo but she didn't suspect that she might find love—nor that the course of her new life would run quite so rocky or would offer challenge and heartache as well as joy, discovery, and fireside debate. Set against a backdrop of steaming cups of tea, freshly baked cakes, and lovely company, The Awakening of Miss Prim is a distinctive and delightfully entertaining tale of literature, philosophy, and the search for happiness.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time, people knew their neighbors. They talked to them, had cook-outs with them, and went to church with them. In our time of unprecedented mobility and increasing isolationism, it's hard to make lasting connections with those who live right outside our front door. We have hundreds of "friends" through online social networking, but we often don't even know the full name of the person who lives right next door. This unique and inspiring book asks the question: What is the most loving thing I can do for the people who live on my street or in my apartment building? Through compelling true stories of lives impacted, the authors show readers how to create genuine friendships with the people who live in closest proximity to them. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this book perfect for small groups or individual study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 bestselling YA Norse-mythology-based Paranormal romance: Runes (book 1): Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her. Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run. Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about him. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life Immortals (book 2): Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something... Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns—Norse destiny deities—to punish her for defying them. So Raine comes up with a plan... She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again. But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves gods might have erased Torin's memories, but they didn't take into account his feelings for Raine and hers for him. Grimnirs (book 3): Straight out of the psych ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The guy she’s loved from a distance for years moves away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life. Too bad Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. He is also a soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life.

Book excerpt: Two disparate worlds met in the life of Alexander Phimister Proctor: the art world centered in the eastern United States and the world of the western frontier. Proctor was a remarkable amalgam: a big-game hunter and intrepid explorer who felt at home in Paris or New York, and an academically trained artist who painted and sculpted the characters and wild creatures of the West. This new edition of Proctor's autobiography provides a thorough introduction to a distinctively American artist whose monumental sculptures and statues adorn parks, public buildings, and museums, as well as private homes and businesses across the country. The text, begun in the late 1930s, when Proctor was in his seventies, takes the reader on a far-flung journey from his birth in Ontario and childhood in Denver to his travels as a young man throughout the United States and eventually to Paris. A new selection of more than 125 illustrations--many in full color--includes historical photographs and reproductions of Proctor's sketches, paintings, and sculptures, tracing the development of his magnificent artistry. Here are the trembling fawns, slinking mountain lions, stalwart warriors, and rearing mustangs that made him famous. Art historian Katharine C. Ebner has annotated the autobiography and restored previously unpublished portions of the original manuscript. "What is beauty?" Proctor asks at the beginning of his narrative. It was a question that resonated throughout his life. Through the words and the work of this remarkable artist, we come to understand his answer.

Book excerpt: This exquisite new publication celebrates how Japanese contemporary artists push traditional washi paper beyond its historic uses to create innovative, highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations. Historically, washi paper has been used as a base for Japanese calligraphy, painting, and printmaking as well as a material in architecture, religious ritual and clothing. In recent years, contemporary Japanese artists have turned this supple yet sturdy paper into a medium for expressing their artistic vision – layering, weaving, dyeing, shredding, folding, or cutting the paper to form abstract sculptures, lyrical folding screens, highly textured wall pieces, and dramatic installations. This elegantly designed volume examines the extraordinary creations of these diverse contemporary artists from Japan, France, and the United States. The publication also demonstrates the resilience, versatility, and unique stature of this ancient artistic medium in the realm of international contemporary art.
