Book excerpt: This book describes the 1873 voyage of the British explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith, based on the diaries and photographs of Lieutenant Herbert C. Chermside, who joined the expedition of the seas around Svalbard. Chermside’s photographs, long believed lost, have recently been uncovered in Sweden and are being curated there by the Grenna Museum. The three unpublished diaries of Herbert Chermside were lent to the Scott Polar Research Institute in 1939 by Mrs. Benjamin Leigh Smith. For the first time, Chermside’s diaries are published in their entirety, with the original photographs shown alongside modern images of the same locations. This includes the first photographic record of the north coast of Svalbard, images that are today being used as comparative data for the study of climate change in the archipelago. The diaries have been fully transcribed and edited. Introductory chapters are included, written by specialists in the history of exploration, history of science, and the history of photography from Penn State University, the University of Gothenburg, and UiT, the Arctic University of Norway, as well as contributors from the UK and Germany. This volume is published in association with Grenna Museum, which will present Chermside’s photographs in a 2022 exhibit on Leigh Smith and A.E. Nordenskiold.

Book excerpt: Irish Settlers in South Australia is the story of two families: the O'Toole family from County Wicklow and the Hayes family from County Galway. The O'Tooles arrived in South Australia in 1840 and the Hayes family in 1849. In the first decades after their arrival they struggled as poor farmers on small 80-acre blocks of land in the districts north of Adelaide. When, in 1869, it became possible to buy land on credit, they joined the migration of settlers into the Mid North. From their origins as impoverished tenant farmers in Ireland, they became respectable landowners in South Australia.Using a diverse range of sources, the author documents her ancestors' hitherto untold story. The sheer sweep of their lives as they endured hardship and misfortune to create a better life for themselves and their descendants is a story worth telling. This book is more than a family history however, for the story of the Hayes and O'Toole families is part of the larger history of South Australia in the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: The Indian Railways is one of the world's largest state-owned enterprises with around 1.4 million employees, over 63,000 kilometres of network, running around 13,000 trains each day. Bankruptcy to Billions reveals for the first time how the Indian Railways transformed from near bankruptcy to post US$ 6 billion (Rs 25,000 crore) annual cash surplus in 2008. This book is a case study of how the Indian Railways brought a revolutionary change in its infrastructure to script its own success story. Defining and evaluating the conventional policy approach to reform large state-owned enterprises, this book comprehensively analyses Railways' innovative modus operandi that changed its status from a "profit averse" to a "profit oriented" organization. Providing valuable insights into other state-owned enterprises, Bankruptcy to Billions unveils the real story of the transformation of the Indian Railways.
