Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Poems of Western Texas For several years, and while at various occupations, I have been in the habit of writing either a story or poem on some striking occurrence or mode of life of Western Texas, always attempting to give a faithful delineation of life, whether attractive or not; and I have now mustered up the courage to issue a few of these in this small volume. So far as I know, but few things have been written about the country, which these stories attempt to describe, by native writers. Nearly all of these stories I have read were written by authors unacquainted with the people or the land of which they wrote. And to this is due, to a great extent, the erroneous impression entertained abroad concerning our country. These writers describe the inhabitants as uncultivated, lawless semi-barbarians. This belief has become so deeply rooted in even the bordering states, that it seems futile to attempt to claim anything like civilization or excellence for this country. Such may be taken as praise springing from undue patriotism, although all know that this country is settled by people from all the most enlightened nations of the globe. Whatever may be the merits or defects of these productions, I hope that they will be read with indulgence proportionate to the sincere intentions with which they are issued. It is more than just a rare book, though; it is also a unique item of Southwestern Americana that defies classification as reminiscence, fiction, or poetry, for it is all of these. In these literary forms Albert Pike became New Mexico's first Anglo-American short story writer and poet, and the narrative portion of his book is one of the earliest American travel accounts from the Mexican borderland. Pike's restless nature led him to follow the Santa Fe trail at a historic period only ten years after its opening, and he made his return through an uncharted area of the Comanche country of Texas. While not the first to explore the Taos-Santa Fe area of New Mexico, Pike gave the most detailed outsider's view of the area and its people at that time, recording his impressions in both short stories and reminiscences. This 1967 edition of Prose Sketches and Poems contains an illuminating introduction by David J. Weber, who gives a short biography of Pike's life and explanatory footnotes. The editor also has taken from contemporary newspapers and appended here eight more of Pike's short stories, which did not appear in the original book.

Sanderson himself stood for many years at a podium, teaching at a community college in Odessa, Texas. There, tired of academic papers and sometimes losing the distinction between fiction and nonfiction, he turned to the world around him to figure out the meaning (or meanings) of education and of culture itself. In a series of autobiographical ruminations, Sanderson develops the theme that frontier wildness is still alive, especially in West Texas, though it may be repressed by fundamentalist religion and conservative politics. West Texans, he finds, have to reconcile the two sides of their contrary natures: the farmer, best represented by the fundamental church, and the frontiersman, best represented by the sleazy bar. Through this theme of internal conflict, Sanderson weaves his experiences of art and censorship, Texas myths in film and fiction, the interaction of Hispanic culture with the culture of West Texas, contradictions posed by academic interests in vocational teaching institutions, intellectual elitism versus the real world, and West Texas women's definition and self-definition. Through the examples of his students, he shows how the quest for the West Texas myth--freedom, liberation, and fulfillment--is always transforming, whether for good or bad. In the end, he recognizes that his insights may tell more about himself than about West Texas, but by trying to make meaning out of his experience, he tells us something about the way all of us learn and think about ourselves.
