Book excerpt: This PhD thesis presents some experimental studies of the enhancement of several nonlinear optical effects, in particular the stimulated Raman scattering, in semiconductor nanostructures. All experimental results are obtained by using the pump-probe method, where, in the present case, pump and probe are picosecond laser pulses. Regarding the stimulated Raman scattering, the probe beam corresponds to the Stokes wave. The thesis is organized in two parts. ln the first part, we present an experimental study of stimulated Raman scattering in a nano-ridge waveguide in silicon-on-insulator (SOI). We demonstrate that the Raman amplification of the probe beam undergoes a saturation effect for high pump intensities and that this saturation is caused by a self-phase modulation of the pump beam. This self-phase modulation is induced by the Kerr effect and by the refractive effect of the free charge carriers generated by two photon absorption in the semiconductor material. An analytical model is developed that describes the evolution of the pump and Stokes intensity during their propagation in the nano-waveguide. Based on the spcctra of the pump and the probe beam, measured after the passage of the waveguide, the model reproduces very well the saturation of the Raman amplification of the probe beam, where this saturation corresponds to a reduction of the effective Raman gain. Moreover, the model allows for a determination of the cw Raman gain cocfficient of silicon. We obtain a value of 8.9 cm/GW, which is in agreement with previously published values. The second part presents an experimental study of stimulated Raman scattering in a planar semiconductor microcavity that is composed of a GaAs layer enclosed by two AIGaAs/AIAs Bragg mirrors. The advantage of such a planar microcavity is the fact that one can obtain easily a doubly resonant situation, where pump and probe beam a both resonant at the same time. We develop an analytical model of the propagation of the probe beam, taking into account several nonlinear effects, notably the two photon absorption, the Kerr effect, the absorption by free carriers, the refractive effect of free carriers, and stimulated Raman scattering. The experimental results of several series of pump-probe measurements indicate that the dynamics of the electrons in the central GaAs layer is modified by Raman scattering. We present an interpretation of the experimental results. According to our hypothesis, the relaxation of the electrons excited to the conduction band by two photon absorption is slowed down by the interaction between the electrons and the Raman phonons, because the latter are exciled coherently by amplified spontaneous Raman scattering. Furthermore, we develop an experimental method to verify this hvpothesis.

Nonlinear optics, however, started to grow up only after the invention of the laser, when intense light sources became easily available. The seminal studies by Peter Franken and Nicolaas Bloembergen, in the 1960s, paved the way for the development of today’s nonlinear photonics, the field of research that encompasses all the studies, designs, and implementations of nonlinear optical devices that can be used for the generation, communication, and processing of information. This field has attracted significant attention, partly due to the great potential of exploiting the optical nonlinearities of new or advanced materials to induce new phenomena and achieve new functions. According to Clarivate Web of Science, almost 200,000 papers were published that refer to the topic “nonlinear optic*”. Over 36,000 papers were published in the last four years (2015–2018) with the same keyword, and over 17,000 used the keyword “nonlinear photonic*”. The present Special Issue of Micromachines aims at reviewing the current state of the art and presenting perspectives of further development. Fundamental and applicative aspects are considered, with special attention paid to hot topics that may lead to technological and scientific breakthroughs.
