This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to love a place? Is it simply a matter of delighting in the beauty of a specific parcel of land--for author E. J. Myers, land in rural Vermont? Or does loving a require a deeper commitment, a deeper exploration, that goes beyond aesthetics? Living now in an 1840's-vintage farmhouse on ten acres of meadow and woods, Myers believes that he has inadvertently grasped the "thread" of this specific place and, by pulling it, has found his property connected to everywhere else. In his new book On Whitcomb Hill, he explores how the historical, ethical, and spiritual aspects owning his property inspire a sense of stewardship not only of his ten acres but of the wider world. On Whitcomb Hill is a tightly woven collection of twenty chapters that explore interconnectedness in the age of environmental crisis. Topics include (among others) the landscape, ponds and streams, traditional tools, meadows, local mammals, moths, cold weather and heat sources, and the complexities, contradictions, and ironies of Vermont history and culture. Written in the spirit of Thoreau's Walden and in the style of contemporary environmentalists such as Edward Hoagland, Gretel Ehrlich, Annie Dillard, and Wendell Berry, On Whitcomb Hill explores a small corner of the American landscape and the aspects of place that it raises. This book is both a celebration of Vermont's iconic beauty and a broader inquiry into what love of place can tell us. Ultimately it asks a crucial question: To what degree does love of place provide a door to other realms of understanding?
Book Synopsis Management by Crisis by : Louise Lintilhac

Book excerpt: Planning a future for the landscapes we live in can be a daunting challenge for many communities in Vermont. Conservation initiatives affect the quality of life for all community members and can be difficult if not impossible to change in the event of poor planning. Through examining stakeholder relationships with land trusts I have explored the complexities of planning processes used by land trusts in Vermont for conservation initiatives The study involved one statewide land trust, the Vermont Land Trust, and two community land trusts, the Stowe Land Trust and the Duxbury Land Trust. I used qualitative methods including document review, observation and interviews to gather data on land trust planning. My study shows how stakeholder relationships shape conservation initiatives, what strategies land trusts use to aid stakeholder involvement, and finally, how stakeholder input affects conservation easements and stewardship. Interviews with multiple internal and external stakeholders for the three land trusts indicate a negative feedback loop within the organizational structure of each land trust I call "management by crisis." My case study examples suggest that stakeholders do not get involved in conservation until there is a threat to the landscape. This makes strategic planning difficult and limits a land trust's ability to link important parcels together for environmental and social benefit. I suggest that management by crisis can be replaced with positive feedback using Community Based Participatory Research. This approach relies on communities initiating projects and being an integral part of the planning process from the beginning of a conservation initiative. By involving stakeholders from the conception of a conservation project, a land trust can better evaluate community needs in relation to social and environmental wellbeing.
Download or read book Hands on the Land written by Jan Albers and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated study of the natural and cultural history of the Vermont landscape. In this book Jan Albers examines the history—natural, environmental, social, and ultimately human—of one of America's most cherished landscapes: Vermont. Albers shows how Vermont has come to stand for the ideal of unspoiled rural community, examining both the basis of the state's pastoral image and the equally real toll taken by the pressure of human hands on the land. She begins with the relatively light touch of Vermont's Native Americans, then shows how European settlers—armed with a conviction that their claim to the land was "a God-given right"—shaped the landscape both to meet economic needs and to satisfy philosophical beliefs. The often turbulent result: a conflict between practical requirements and romantic ideals that has persisted to this day. Making lively use of contemporary accounts, advertisements, maps, landscape paintings, and vintage photographs, Albers delves into the stories and personalities behind the development of a succession of Vermont landscapes. She observes the growth of communities from tiny settlements to picturesque villages to bustling cities; traces the development of agriculture, forestry, mining, industry, and the influence of burgeoning technology; and proceeds to the growth of environmental consciousness, aided by both private initiative and governmental regulation. She reveals how as community strengthens, so does responsible stewardship of the land. Albers shows that like any landscape, the Vermont landscape reflects the human decisions that have been made about it—and that the more a community understands about how such decisions have been made, the better will be its future decisions.
