The Virgin Encyclopedia of 80's Music is a complete handbook of information and opinion about the history of the most fragmented and frequently maligned decade in the history of popular music. Here are 1000 entries on the bands, musicians, songwriters, producers and record labels - everyone who had a significant impact on the development of rock and pop music in those ten years, from the New Romantics who brought colour and image to fill the gap left by punk and the new wave, to the stadium acts who provided a launch pad for Live Aid, to the myriad variations of house and techno spawned in the latter half of the Eighties. As well as all the giants of the period the encyclopedia has the range and depth to include artists who flourished briefly and yet were quintessential to the decade. A perfect mix of fact and informed opinion contained in one single volume, distilled from the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, universally acclaimed as the world's leading source of reference on rock and pop history. Informed, infatuating and invaluable.

Book excerpt: Al-Qa’ida: in the 80s they were in Afghanistan, supported by America and fighting the Russians. In the new century they have metastasized throughout the world’s geopolitical body. Where were they in the 90s? Unholy Terror provides the answer, with all its terrifying implications for our world today. This book provides the missing piece in the puzzle of al-Qa’ida’s transformation from an isolated fighting force into a lethal global threat: the Bosnian war of 1992 to 1995. John R. Schindler reveals the unexamined role that radical Islam played in that terrible conflict--and the ill-considered contributions of American policy to al-Qa’ida’s growth. His book explores a truth long hidden from view: that, like Afghanistan in the 1980s, Bosnia in the 1990s became a training ground for the mujahidin. Unholy Terror at last exposes the shocking story of how bin Laden successfully exploited the Bosnian conflict for his own ends--and of how the U. S. Government gave substantial support to his unholy warriors, leading to blowback of epic proportions.

The wisdom Cillín shares has enabled me to become more resilient, a better leader, and most importantly, a better parent. Luke Johnstone. Director, Double-O Consulting Working with Cillín as my coach over the last few years, he has taught me many tips, tricks, technique, and strategies to inspect and learn about myself so that I can grow in my own leadership journey. This book is an amazing toolkit collection of those teachings and I, for one, am extremely grateful to have it all put together in one place. I can see that my own copy of this book is going to be well-thumbed through and dog-eared before too long. Cillín's storytelling and real life examples make this book memorable and, most of all, enjoyable to read. June McClintcok. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stevan Dedijer (19112004) was born as a Serb in Bosnia-Heregovina by politically active parents. After a childhood marked by the assassination of Arch-duke Frans Ferdinand in June 1914 and the catastrophe of the First World War, Stevan entered a life-long strange odyssey through the ideas and institutions of a turbulent century. As an immigrant in the U.S. during the Great Depression, Stevan joined the Communist Party. With party consent he was recruited by the secret U.S. intelligence service OSS and was trained for sabotage mission in the Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia. Purged from the OSS, he volunteered for the Army, and was assigned to the 101st airborne as a bodyguard for the divisional commander general Maxwell Taylor. Arriving too late for the Normandy landing, he parachuted over Arnhem in the failed Operation Market Garden. Still under party orders, he bailed out yelling, 'Long live Stalin!'. After seeing extensive combat around Bastogne, in the Battle of the Bulge, Stevan was transferred from the US Army to the Tito Partisan movement that he had wanted to join since the beginning of the war. Together with his elder brother Vladimir, Stevan made a lightning career in post-war Yugoslavia, including posts as editor-in-chief of the party newspaper Borba and the directorship of the Yugoslav Atomic Energy Institute, the latter assignment given to him he had studied physics at Princeton in the mid-1930s. After Tito's break with Moscow and the violent crackdown on dissidents in the 1950s, Stevan as several others in the new communist elite became increasingly critical of Tito's dictatorship and the lack of freedom. Purged and put in internal exile, Stevan finally managed to escape Yugoslavia through an invitation to the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, arranged by the Swedish professor of nuclear physics Torsten Gustafson in Lund. With his assistance and contacts, Stevan was granted political asylum in Sweden and was able to establish himself at Lund University, where he founded what was to become the Research Policy Institute. Leaving nuclear physics behind, Stevan now moved into the field of information and knowledge production, formulating the concept of a coming information explosion decades before it became common knowledge. Formulating a theory of Social Intelligence, Stevan foresaw the coming of an age where individuals and organisations alike would become dependent on their ability to collect, process and use information. Stevan Dedijers work in the field of social intelligence made him one of the pioneers and inspirers of the development of business intelligence, relying on the increased information from open sources. His life-span made a full circle as he after the fall of communism returned to Yugoslavia and the city of Dubrovnik, not far from where his father had been born more than a century earlier. As a twist of fate, Stevan was to experience the third war of his life, My most horrible war' as he writes in this breathtaking, humorous and self-reflecting account of a human life shaped by the horrors and promises of twentieth century history, and a personality characterised by determination, curiosity and an astonishing absence of self-pity.

Book excerpt: "It's mind-blowing to me how utterly far gone Steve-O was, and how he looks back on it in this book with such intelligence, humor, and searing honesty. What a truly unbelievable life." --Johnny Knoxville From his early days videotaping crazy skateboard stunts to starring in the Jackass movies, there was little that Stephen "Steve-O" Glover wouldn't do. Whether it was stapling his nutsack to his leg or diving into a pool full of elephant crap, almost nothing was out of bounds. As the stunts got crazier, his life kept pace. He developed a crippling addiction to drugs and alcohol, and an obsession with his own celebrity that proved nearly as dangerous. Only an intervention and a visit to a psychiatric ward saved his life. Today he has been clean and sober for more than three years. Professional Idiot recounts the lunacy, the debauchery, the stunts, the drug addiction, and the path to recovery with bravado, humor, and heart. "A great book to read before you get on the roller coaster to hell, if you plan on surviving to tell about it like Steve-O did." --Nikki Sixx, author of The Heroin Diaries "This is the perfect book for people who hate reading." --Tommy Lee, author of Tommyland The feedback I've gotten on Facebook and Twitter from those of you who've read this book has been fascinating, heartwarming, and hilarious. I'm happy to keep answering your questions on there, and I encourage more of you to join in the discussion. Hope to hear from you soon, and thank you all so much. Love, Steve-O

Book excerpt: It is the largest and perhaps the most important organ of our body—it covers our fragile inner parts, defines our social identities, and channels our sensory experiences. And yet we rarely give a thought. With The Book of Skin, Steven Connor aims to change all that, offering an intriguing cultural history of skin. Connor first examines physical issues such as leprosy, skin pigmentation, cancer, blushing, and attenuations of erotic touch. He also explains why specific colors symbolize certain emotions, such as green for envy or yellow for cowardice, as well as why skin is the focus of destructive rage in many people’s violent fantasies. The Book of Skin then probes into how skin has been such a powerfully symbolic terrain in photography, religious iconography, cinema, and literature. From the Turin shroud to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man to plastic surgery, The Book of Skin expertly examines the role of skin in Western culture. A compelling read that penetrates well beyond skin-deep, The Book of Skin validates James Joyce’s declaration that “modern man has an epidermis rather than a soul.” “Richly conceived and elaborately thought out. No flicker of meaning has escaped Connor’s ferocious, all-seeing eye.”—Guardian

Book excerpt: The world has been massively unappreciative of sixteen-year-old Baxter Zevcenko. His bloodline may be a combination of ancient Boer mystic and giant shape-shifting crow, and he may have won an inter-dimensional battle and saved the world, but does anyone care? No. Instead he’s packed off to Hexpoort, part reformatory, part military school, and just like Hogwarts (except with sex, drugs, and better internet access). The problem is that Baxter sucks at magic. He’s also desperately attempting to control his new ability to dreamwalk, all the while being singled out by the school’s resident bully, who just so happens to be the Chosen One. But when the school comes under attack, Baxter needs to forget all that and step into action. The only way is joining forces with his favourite recovering alcoholic of a supernatural bounty hunter, Ronin, to try and save the world from the apocalypse. Again.
