Book excerpt: This book is a musical ethnography of the Duna people of Papua New Guinea. A people who have experienced extraordinary social change in recent history, their musical traditions have also radically changed during this time. New forms of music have been introduced, while ancestral traditions have been altered or even abandoned. This study shows how, through musical creativity, Duna people maintain a connection with their past, and their identity, whilst simultaneously embracing the challenges of the present.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Process of a Steep Rocky Reservoir Bank in a Dynamic Mechanical Environment by : Luqi Wang
Download or read book Evolutionary Process of a Steep Rocky Reservoir Bank in a Dynamic Mechanical Environment written by Luqi Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To prevent the collapse of dangerous rock masses on steep rocky reservoir banks which can cause casualties and property loss, it is essential to design and conduct practical experiments to quantify the evolution processes of the reservoir banks and control such dangerous rock masses. Using the Jianchuandong Dangerous Rock Mass project as a case study, this book generalizes the mechanical model of the project to show how improved equipment can be used to measure the mechanical state transition under the continuous action of axial pressure. It details a series of experiments to study the evolution of a severely steep rocky reservoir bank, which comprehensively consider the influence of hydraulic coupling, dry-wet cycles, axial pressure, and time-dependent effects. The results support a new method for determining the stability of dangerous rock masses on reservoir banks. Combines engineering principles, real data, experimental methods and results Provides a complete research method for investigating hydrogeology failure processes The book suits practitioners in hydropower engineering, engineering geology, and disaster protection.

Book Synopsis The Path Was Steep by : Suzanne Pickett
Download or read book The Path Was Steep written by Suzanne Pickett and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sue Pickett was a coal miner's daughter who became a coal miner's wife and witnessed and lived through the turbulent years of the Great Depression and the sometimes violent struggles between labor unions and coal mine bosses throughout the Appalachian South—especially her native Alabama. The dramatic central episode in her account is a March 1934 standoff between striking miners and the mine owners. She writes of that "wild night when an armed mob gathered at Coleanor, ready to fight and, if necessary, die for the rights to which they had newly awakened. . . . One black man wept as he ran, afraid that someone else would kill [the dangerous and feared coal company enforcer] Mike Self, whom he believed it was his right to kill. . . ." Pickett's story is peopled with memorable characters, including her irrepressible husband David and an almost Biblical cast of other family members; a roaring, fire-belching automobile nicknamed Thunderbolt; Irene, a fiercely proud ten-year-old mountain girl left homeless by the hard times; and many others. The memoir is a saga of determined working-class people making do and getting by, but equally of their love of family and land.
