The six-time Super Bowl champions are the favorites of network television programmers, have the broadest and most impassioned fan base-the Steelers outsell all other NFL teams in merchandise, and at some stadiums Steel City fans outnumber the home team's faithful-and embody a winning spirit that have made them the model franchise in the most popular sport in the U.S. Founded in 1933 by the beloved Rooney family in the gritty heartland of industrial America, the team suffered through nearly four decades of futility until the arrival of brilliant, laconic coach Chuck Noll in 1969, followed by a host of players who would etch their names in the history of the game. Behind future Hall of Famers Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert and Mel Blount, the Steelers teams of the '70s won four Super Bowls in six years and captured the imagination of a nation with their style-dashing on offense, devastating on defense. The love affair has endured ever since, through the hard-nosed era of Bill Cowher and Jerome Bettis to today's team, with crossover stars such as Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu. This book from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED tells the extraordinary story of the Steelers through the eyes of SI's renowned writers and the world's most accomplished sports photographers. As the Steelers embark on their 80th anniversary, there's no better way to celebrate football's best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional football is the most popular sport in the United States today. With so many famous players from the past and present, some of whom achieved notoriety because of a persona they created, there are fans who have also made a name for themselves by either their work and loyalty for their team, or by creating an "alter ego" with respect to how they cheer or support their team. Some have incredibly wild and outrageous outfits. On game days, some of these diehard fans take longer to get themselves ready for games than the players they cheer for! The face paint, the outrageous outfits, the chants and cheers, and the attention to detail are what make these fans unique. During football season, these diehard fans can be seen each weekend as they showcase themselves in support of their team in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide. In 1998, Visa sponsored a national contest to find the wildest, most loyal, and most intriguing fans for each team in the league. The award was entitled, "The Visa Hall of Fans" Award as fans were chosen from each team based on their submitted essays and photos. Contestants had to explain why they should represent their respective team in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. At the time, a special wing in the Hall was created to honor these diehard fans. Visa awarded plaques to the winners - originally at the Hall, and later in front of the hometown fans at each team's stadium. The Hall of Fame displayed the plaques for a year until the new class of fans was selected and their plaques were displayed. At that point, the prior year's winners had their names placed on a permanent wall plaque in the "Hall of Fans" wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Book excerpt: The 1974-75 Pittsburgh Steelers captured the franchise's first championship by defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX, and in the process set the stage for one of the most remarkable dynasties in professional sports. Their history prior to that season, dating back over four decades, had been largely unsuccessful, with only a handful of winning seasons and fewer playoff appearances to their credit. Bolstered by a crop of future Hall of Fame players in the likes of Greene, Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Lambert, Ham, and Blount and led by coach Chuck Noll, who would also claim a spot in Canton, Ohio after his storied career ended with four Super Bowl victories, the Steelers exhibited a turnaround through the early 1970's but were still in search of a first title to legitimize their success. The 1974-75 squad changed all of that, winning with both skill and tenacity and establishing a culture of Steelers pride that now spans multiple generations and touches fans everywhere from western Pennsylvania to the far reaches of the globe. That Steelers team was the foundation for all of the franchise's great accomplishments over the following years; the first champion in what would become a lasting legacy of success for the black and gold and a way of life for their fans. This book is the first in a series that details the Steelers' rise to becoming a true Black and Gold Dynasty.

Book excerpt: Did you know that one former star for the Pittsburgh Steelers went on to lower the driving age to 16 as a member of his state's legislature? Or that one former Steeler now leads the St. Patrick's Day Parade every year in Chicago? Or that another owned a casino in Reno? And that's just the players from the dark ages of the Steelers' organization.Where have guys like Ted Marchibroda, Roy Jefferson, Frenchy Fuqua, Jack Lambert, and Dermontti Dawson gone? What about Levon Kirkland, Kevin Greene, Carnell Lake, Bubby Brister, Bruce Van Dyke, and Frank Lewis? The answers are inside. Men of Steel profiles a Who's Who list of Steeler greats, catching up with the former players while taking each for a nostalgic walk down memory lane. Through interviews with the players themselves-including Joe Greene, Dick Hoak, Rod Woodson, Donnie Shell, and Tunch Ilkin-fans can relive the past as well as catch up to the present. From Elbie Nickel and the second-most famous play in team history to the group from the 1960s that legendary writer Myron Cope once blasted for abstaining from alcohol, Men of Steel chronicles 60 years of Steelers history dating back to the 1940s. Most Steeler fans will enjoy recalling each player's athletic accomplishments, but this book also delivers the rest of the story-both on and off the field. For fans of Pittsburgh football, it gets no better than Men of Steel.

Book excerpt: An almost unknown chapter of sporting—and American—history Tracing the history of the National Football League during World War II, this book delves into the severe player shortage during the war which led to the merging of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles, creating the “Steagles.” The team’s center was deaf in one ear, its wide receiver was blind in one eye (and partially blind in the other), and its halfback had bleeding ulcers. One player was so old he’d never before played football with a helmet. Yet somehow, this group of players—deemed unfit for military service due to age or physical ailment—posted a winning record in the league, to the surprise of players and fans alike. Digging into the history of the war paralleled by the unlikely story of the Steagles franchise, both sports fans and history buffs will learn about the cultural significance of this motley crew of ball players during a trying time in United States history.
