Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July, 1984, under the authority of the Clean Water Act, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated an effort to develop sediment quality criteria. This effort was initiated with a workshop, in which a variety of experts worked to identify an approach by which the Agency could develop numerical sediment quality criteria. Efforts are under way to evaluate, modify, and verify the approach selected by the workshop through literature reviews, bioassays, data analysis, and field verification studies. The near-term goal of this effort is to present the findings of this effort to the EPA's Science Advisory Board for review and eventual approval.

Book excerpt: This document is a compendium of scientifically valid and accepted methods that can be used to assess sediment quality and predict ecological impacts...the intent here is to provide the most useful overall measures or predictors of ecological impacts currently in use rather than procedures that may have limited application outside of a particular regulatory framework... parag The information provided in the compendium on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the different assessment methods can provide assistance in selecting the appropriate methods.

Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated an effort to develop sediment quality criteria for both freshwater and marine ecosystems. The Screening Level Concentration (SLC) approach is one of several methods EPA is evaluating for calculating sediment quality criteria. The SLC approach uses field data on the cooccurrence in sediments of benthic infaunal invertebrates and different concentrations of the nonpolar organic contaminant of interest. The SLC method is designed to estimate the highest concentration (normalized to sediment organic carbon concentration) of a particular nonpolar organic contaminant in sediments that can be tolerated by approximately 95% of benthic infauna. As such, the SLC value could be used in a regulatory context as the concentration of a contaminant in sediment that, if exceeded, could lead to environmental degradation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.

Book excerpt: Sediment contamination is a widespread environmental problem that can potentially pose a threat to a variety of aquatic ecosystems. The sediment test methods in this manual will be used by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to make decisions under a range of statutory authorities concerning such issues as: dredged material disposal, registration of pesticides and toxic substances, superfound site assessment, and assessment and cleanup of hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. The use of uniform sediment testing procedures by USEPA programs is expected to increase data accuracy and precision, facilitate test replication, increase the comparative value of test results, and ultimately, increase the efficiency of regulatory processes requiring sediment tests.
