Book excerpt: The greatest revolution in a country is the one that affects the status and living conditions of women. The fall of India from her high status was partly atleast due to the deterioration of the status and position of women in India.Congress stands whole-heartedly for equal citizenship of women with men...(so far as I am concerened I think that) women should be treated on the same level as men educationally and economically and industrially...he downtrodden sections of society, who have been trampled upon for centuries, are our special responsibility. We must help them to become strong and bold and take their place in society. Women are more responsible even than men for the next generation, and unless they are enabled to participate fully in all national activities, the progress of the nation sufferes. The Congress is therefore of opinion that every effort should be made to open out opportunities of service for them in the legislatures and in social activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under human development in India, is the persistence of female-male gaps indicative of the low status assigned to women in that cultural setting? Are the various gender ideologies rooted in the different kinship structures leading to a subordinate status of women in India? Does economic development interact with kinship patterns to produce spatial variations in gender relations? Do these structural processes affect women's status differently in different parts of India? In other words, does 'place' play a role in the constitution of gender differences? This book focuses on the interdependence of gender relations, development levels, and social stratification without underestimating the full significance of each in Indian society. This work offers a multidimensional view that argues for conceptualizing status broadly in terms of its economic, social, and political dimensions. The contrasting performance of specific states/districts on each dimension clearly indicates that the dynamic and variable nature of women's status cannot be captured by any one dimension. It is observed that women's status is affected by kinship structures, development levels, and social stratification, which vary over space and time, individually, and in interaction with each other. It is this variation that leads to differences in women's position from one region of India to another.
Book Synopsis Women and Indian Society by : Andal Narayanan
Download or read book Women and Indian Society written by Andal Narayanan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women and Indian Society: Options and Constraints is all about the women of India: the way they were perceived during the ancient times, the perceptions of their role in a matriarchal society, and the changes that cropped up in their lives during the freedom struggle. However, not much ground appears to have been covered in analysing the causes for the subordinate status of the Indian women. The author has explained the core causes for their cloistered roles, and their marginalisation, and has put forth some key factors that could empower them with an identity of their own and supply them with a viable escape route out of a state of entrapment. The basic reasons for subjugation of women in India are lack of education, denial of exposure to activities outside the homes, and an unreasonable rationalisation that such education or exposure will not improve their lot anyway. This has led to a self-fulfilling prophesy type of consequence, and left the women unchanged. This work is meant to be used as a reference book by serious researchers in women's studies, which has been included as an interdisciplinary subject in most of the Indian universities. Both informative and intimidating, the contents of this book are expected to start a progressive thought process in the minds of discerning readers."
