Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the solution of a number of problems on the stability and controllability of airplanes, there arises the necessity for knowing the characteristics of the tail surfaces of the types in common use today. Of those characteristics, the most important are the effectiveness and hinge moments of the tail surfaces. As has been shown in the present paper, there exists the possibility of determining these characteristics by the formulas obtained with a degree of accuracy sufficient for the purposes of preliminary computation. These formulas take into account a number of fundamental tail characteristics such as tail cut-outs on the control surface and the form of the control surface leading edge.

Book excerpt: Summary: The NACA is conducting flight tests of an all-movable horizontal tail installed on a Curtiss XP-42 airplane because of its possible advantages as a longitudinal control for flight at high Mach numbers. The results are presented for some preliminary tests in the low-speed range for which the tail was very closely balanced aerodynamically and a bobweight was used to obtain stable stick-force variations with speed and acceleration. For these tests, the tail was hinged at 0.24 chord and was tried with two arrangements of servotab control. The elevator control was found to be unsatisfactory with the control arrangements tested. Although there were sufficient variation of stick force with acceleration in steady turns and a stable stick-force variation with speed, the near-zero variation of stick force with stick deflection resulted in an extremely sensitive control that required continuous attention in order to avoid motions of the airplane due to inadvertent movements of the control stick. For subsequent tests, the servotabs are being connected as geared unbalancing tabs in order that more conventional elevator hinge-moment characteristics may be obtained. The expected advantages of the all-movable tail with a control system utilizing tabs would of course be limited to flight at Mach numbers below those for which severe compressibility effects are encountered on the tail itself. For higher Mach numbers, the all-movable tail would require an irreversible power-boost control in order to handle the large hinge-moment increases that are expected.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic characteristics of a model designed to represent an all body, hypersonic cruise aircraft are presented for Mach numbers from 0.65 to 10.6. The configuration had a delta planform with an elliptic cone forebody and an afterbody of elliptic cross section. Detailed effects of varying angle of attack (-2 to 15 deg), angle of sideslip (-2 to 8 deg), Mach number, and configuration buildup were considered. In addition, the effectiveness of horizontal tail, vertical tail, and canard stabilizing and control surfaces was investigated. The results indicate that all configurations were longitudinally stable near maximum lift drag ratio. The configurations with vertical tails were directionally stable at all angles of attack. Trim penalties were small at hypersonic speeds for a center of gravity location representative of the airplane, but because of the large rearward travel of the aerodynamic center, trim penalties were severe at transonic Mach numbers.

Book excerpt: A technique of testing wind-tunnel powered models has been developed as a result of experience gained in the investigation of the static longitudinal and lateral stability and control characteristics of several powered models in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel. As an important part of this technique, a minimum program of the tests considered necessary to specify satisfactorily the static stability and control characteristics for present-day airplanes has been tentatively established.

James and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An aircraft configuration, previously conceived as a means to achieve favorable aerodynamic stability characteristics., high lift-drag ratio, and low heating rates at high supersonic speeds., was modified in an attempt to increase further the lift-drag ratio without adversely affecting the other desirable characteristics. The original configuration consisted of three identical triangular wing panels symmetrically disposed about an ogive-cylinder body equal in length to the root chord of the panels. This configuration was modified by altering the angular disposition of the wing panels, by reducing the area of the panel forming the vertical fin, and by reshaping the body to produce interference lift. Six-component force and moment tests of the modified configuration at combined angles of attack and sideslip were made at a Mach number of 3.3 and a Reynolds number of 5.46 million. A maximum lift-drag ratio of 6.65 (excluding base drag) was measured at a lift coefficient of 0.100 and an angle of attack of 3.60. The lift-drag ratio remained greater than 3 up to lift coefficient of 0.35. Performance estimates, which predicted a maximum lift-drag ratio for the modified configuration 27 percent greater than that of the original configuration, agreed well with experiment. The modified configuration exhibited favorable static stability characteristics within the test range. Longitudinal and directional centers of pressure were slightly aft of the respective centroids of projected plan-form and side area.
