Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the concept “Cash is King” is today widely recognized, the cash flow statement was rather neglected until the EU accounting regulators discovered its relevance in explaining the real value of the business. This book investigates the value relevance of the operating cash flow as reported under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IAS/IFRS) for the largest European listed companies and US listed companies in the past recent years. Using the model based on the valuation theory developed by Ohlson, which measures the market value of equity as a function of accounting variables, the author concludes that operating cash flow represents a significant variable in determining the value relevance of the largest European and US listed companies. These findings provide siginificant implications for standard setters and support the continued requirements for disclosure of cash flow information under IAS 7.

Book excerpt: Cash Flow Statement The cash flow statement is a financial statement that provides an overview of a company's cash inflows and outflows during a specific period. It's divided into three main sections: operating activities, investing activities, and financing activities. Operating Activities: This section reports cash flows from the company's core business operations. It includes transactions such as revenue from sales, payment to suppliers, salaries to employees, and taxes paid. Operating cash flow indicates how much cash the company generates or consumes from its normal business operations. Investing Activities: This section covers cash flows related to the purchase and sale of long-term assets and investments. It includes expenditures on property, plant, and equipment (capital expenditures), purchases or sales of securities, and acquisitions or divestitures of subsidiaries or other businesses. Investing cash flow shows how the company is investing in its future growth or divesting assets. Financing Activities: This section accounts for cash flows related to the company's financing activities. It includes transactions such as issuing or repurchasing stock, borrowing or repaying loans, and payment of dividends. Financing cash flow reflects how the company raises capital and manages its debt. By analysing the cash flow statement, investors can assess a company's ability to generate cash, its liquidity, and its financial flexibility. It complements the income statement and balance sheet by providing insights into the actual cash movements within the business, which may differ from reported profits due to non-cash items such as depreciation and amortization.
