Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Churches and the Kingdom of Christ: An Essay on the Establishment of Ministers, Forms and Services of Religion by Secular Power; And on Its Inconsistency With the Free, Humbling, Spiritual Nature of the Christian Dispensation Having long been painfully impressed with the evils of compulsory ecclesiastical systems, existing in Britain and in other nations, I have thought it to be a duty to my own country in particular, to point out those evils, and faithfully to plead for such a thorough change in this respect, as is required by the great principles of the New Testament, and adapted to promote the highest interests of man. Far from being disposed to write in a strain of bitterness, I have endeavoured to handle the subject dispassionately and impartially, under the conviction that every Christian community is entitled to be treated with deference and respect. The present complaint is not against Protestant Episcopacy, or any other religious profession, as such; but applies to all systems for establishing and upholding any religious tenets by the power of the state. It is the principle of this union and enforcement, - the interference of the civil authority in religious matters, and the intrusion of ecclesiastical authority into secular matters, with whatever doctrines connected, that will be mainly considered in the following pages. I rejoice in believing that many of the ministers and private individuals of the Established Church of England, to which principally reference is made, are members of the true universal church of Christ, and children of God by adoption. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an eternal perspective, the pages of this book express a deep desire that the members of the body of Christ be empowered to return to the simple message of the first-century church to reconcile the world to its loving Creator for their everlasting abode with him. In an effort to bring unity, these pages will focus on the essential beliefs that can unite all believers as it identifies some nonessentials that tend to divide them. As some current aspects of today’s church are compared to the early church, the reader will be challenged to rethink how today’s church should redirect its priorities, energy, and resources to fulfill its divine mission to bring light and hope to all the inhabitants of the world. It is through the eyes of our Savior’s own words that this comparison can be made. It is all about him. He came to announce the kingdom, to teach the principles of that kingdom to live by, and to open the door to that kingdom by taking our sins and dying on the cross for us. He is the one who desires that all his own be one. He is the one who brought the message of life after death. He is the one that desires that his children be a sanctified people. Finally, it is not a case of “if Jesus were here today,” but it is a reality that he will come soon to receive all who love his appearing. It is the aim of this book to help prepare his people to receive him as a sanctified church busy in advancing his everlasting purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geerhardus Vos devotes this work to a discussion of Jesus' greatest focus in ministry -- the "kingdom of God" (and the "kingdom of heaven," which Vos takes to be referencing the same thing.) Vos begins by connecting Christ's teaching on the kingdom to the Old Testament and its concepts of a Messianic king. Then he moves into the conception of the kingdom during the New Testament with a cursory analysis of the pertinent Greek phrases (but largely accessible to a layman). From there, he moves into the kingdom as it is now, and as it will be in the new heavens and the new earth. Finally, the remaining chapters detail specific aspects and characteristics of the kingdom as it currently exists including the church as it is also compared to the kingdom, and as the means by which one gains entrance into the kingdom. Vos' enlightening treatment of this important theme in the Scriptures ought to be read, particularly by pastors, to assist in preaching and teaching on passages dealing with this vital subject.

Book excerpt: The church is political. Theologians have been debating this claim for years. Liberationists, Anabaptists, Augustinians, neo-Calvinists, Radical Orthodox and others continue to discuss the matter. What do we mean by politics and the political? What are the limits of the church’s political reach? What is the nature of the church as an institution? How do we establish these claims theologically? Jonathan Leeman sets out to address these questions in this significant work. Drawing on covenantal theology and the ‘new institutionalism’ in political science, Leeman critiques political liberalism and explores how the biblical canon informs an account of the local church as an embassy of Christ’s kingdom. Political Church heralds a new era in political theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million copies sold! Essential reading for Catholics of all walks of life. Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.
