Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article examines the factors that affect state adoption of environmental audit legislation and self-policing policies. The results of both a cross-section probit and a Weibull proportional hazard model suggest that political context and state-federal relationships are key factors in adoption decisions while environmental conditions are less significant and institutional capacity is the least important. Overall, the results for audit privilege and immunity legislation are very similar, but several explanatory factors affect adoption of audit legislation and self-policing policies in opposite ways. Finally, these results also suggest that EPA opposition to audit legislation has had a significant deterrent effect.
Book Synopsis Environmental Audit by : Joseph Lee Miller

Book excerpt: The discussion begins with describing the nature of the environmental audit, defining its characteristics, examining its necessity, and explaining its weakness. Next, this paper analyzes current approaches for encouraging auditing and protecting the results of a self-evaluation. In addition to safeguards available under common law, some states offer privilege and/or immunity as protection for those who police themselves, while EPA has chosen to provided penalty mitigation. To review the treatment of audits at the federal level requires scrutinizing the policy of the EPA, as well as the approach taken by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the applicability of the U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines. After examining the federal approach, this paper details the initiatives adopted by state governments that offer refuge to entities conducting environmental audits. Although the state statutes contain some unique provisions, they fall largely within the parameters of providing privileged treatment to audit results and offering some form of immunity for those entities that voluntarily disclose their findings. Several of these statutes require the state regulatory agency to evaluate the success of the law in promoting compliance and to report its findings to the legislature, which may then extend the act, if it contains a sunset provision, or modify or repeal the act. This thesis concludes by noting that all states with environmental audit legislation risk disapproval and, perhaps, reversion of regulatory programs delegated to them by the federal government.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Sustainability Management by : Christian Ndubisi Madu
Download or read book Handbook of Sustainability Management written by Christian Ndubisi Madu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is about the effective management of nonrenewable and nonreplenishable natural resources. These resources are limited and critical to maintaining ecological balance. A collective effort is required to balance our socio-economic needs with environmental needs. This could be achieved by re-evaluating policies and actions as to how they affect the environment. Sustainability requires changes in traditional practices of doing things and refocusing ourselves to the needs of the earth. This handbook explores the role of sustainability in achieving social development, environmental protection, and economic development. These three areas constitute what is referred to as the triple bottom line (TBL). Sustainability management may help organizations and their global supply networks to re-evaluate their policies, processes, programs, and projects in terms of triple bottom line. Sustainability helps to facilitate planning, implementing, reviewing, and improving an organization's actions and operations to meet ecological goals.

Book Synopsis Environmental Policy and the Pursuit of Sustainability by : Chelsea Schelly
Download or read book Environmental Policy and the Pursuit of Sustainability written by Chelsea Schelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly apparent that human activities are not suitable for sustaining a healthy global environment. From energy development to resource extraction to use of land and water, humans are having a devastating effect on the earth’s ability to sustain human societies and quality lives. Many approaches to changing the negative environmental consequences of human activities focus on one of two options, emphasizing either technological fixes or individual behavior change to reduce environmental harms through sustainable consumption habits. This book takes a different approach, focusing on the role of environmental policy in shaping the possibilities for and creating hindrances to pursuing more sustainable use of environmental resources. This unique compilation examines environmental policy through empirical case studies, demonstrating through each particular example how environmental policies are formed, how they operate, what they do in terms of shaping behaviors and future trajectories, and how they intersect with other social dynamics such as politics, power, social norms, and social organization. By providing case studies from both the United States and Mexico, this book provides a cross-national perspective on current environmental policies and their role in creating and limiting sustainable human futures. Organized around four key parts – Water; Land; Health and Wellbeing; and Resilience – and with a central theme of environmental justice and equity, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental policy and sustainability.

Download or read book A Guide to Local Environmental Auditing written by Hugh Barton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development is still seen by authorities as an abstract concept. Local Environmental Auditing will help put it into practice. The book provides a comprehensive guide to monitoring the state of the local environment and establishing the impacts of local actions on global issues, and shows how current local authority policy and practice can be adapted to recognize environmental priorities. The authors provide both a guide to and an assessment of the subject: they link the processes with the issues, with specific information on carrying out the audit (including checklists, case studies and standards) and a detailed discussion of the issues and choices which local authorities may face. Clearly structured and accessible, this will be an essential handbook, both for local government departments and other local organizations, and students in a wide range of subjects, including environmental science and health, town planning, urban and rural studies, social science and politics.

Download or read book Natural Resources Utilization in China written by Malin Song and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the evaluation, coordination, and effects of China’s natural resource utilization. By adopting both quantitative and qualitative analyses, this book objectively evaluates the spatial distribution characteristics and coupling relationship of China’s natural resource utilization based on the status quo and prominent problems during resource utilization. Moreover, the environmental, economic, and price fluctuation effects of China’s natural resource utilization are discussed. Finally, current policy systems for efficient utilization of natural resources in China and abroad are provided, which suggest a way for China to achieve efficient utilization of natural resources through an appropriate policy mechanism. This book aims to seek the balance the utilization of natural resources and sustainable development in China. It puts forward a new paradigm of natural resource utilization by incorporating the efficiency evaluation, coordination measures, and effect mechanisms of different kinds of natural resources. The evaluation system and related research methods for the efficient utilization of natural resources are very mature, laying a foundation for the development of this book’s content. As the conservation of natural resources is widely accepted, this book helps readers understand how to achieve efficient natural resource utilization in China. Meanwhile, the study of resource utilization in China can provide insights for other countries.
