At a time when it was illegal to publish images of Nelson Mandela, Bill Cosby became the most recognizable Black man in the country, and, Krabill argues, his presence in the living rooms of white South Africans helped lay the groundwork for Mandela’s release and ascension to power. Weaving together South Africa’s political history and a social history of television, Krabill challenges conventional understandings of globalization, offering up new insights into the relationship between politics and the media.

The teen bedroom has universally been regarded as a safe haven for adolescents from all classes and backgrounds, and a near-sacred space that s basically off-limits to everyone but its teenage occupants (and their invited guests). But it s a relatively recent Western phenomenon that assumed a prominent role in socializing teens and shaping their identities during the years following World War II. As part of the identity-shaping process, the teen bedroom became a safe space for teens to express their growing consumer power, parallel to the emergence of youth subcultures after the War. Reid tracks the history of bedrooms for children back to the Civil War period, though the bulk of his research stretches from the late 1950s through the beginning of the 21st century. The rock posters, stuffed animals, and record players that found their way into teen bedroom during this period represent ways in which tends became major contributors to the postwar consumer economy. Reid by no means neglects popular culture, in the meantime, detailing the ways in which the teen bedroom appeared in song, film, television, and literature. It was often portrayed as a space of personal development and self-expression, but also as a site profound loneliness and romantic longing. To quote the Beach Boys 1963 hit song In My Room, the postwar teen bedroom featured just as much sighing and crying as it did scheming and dreaming. "

Book excerpt: In this engaging book, Amber Reed provides a new perspective on South Africa’s democracy by exploring Black residents’ nostalgia for life during apartheid in the rural Eastern Cape. Reed looks at a surprising phenomenon encountered in the post-apartheid nation: despite the Department of Education mandating curricula meant to teach values of civic responsibility and liberal democracy, those who are actually responsible for teaching this material (and the students taking it) often resist what they see as the imposition of “white” values. These teachers and students do not see South African democracy as a type of freedom, but rather as destructive of their own “African culture”—whereas apartheid, at least ostensibly, allowed for cultural expression in the former rural homelands. In the Eastern Cape, Reed observes, resistance to democracy occurs alongside nostalgia for apartheid among the very citizens who were most disenfranchised by the late racist, authoritarian regime. Examining a rural town in the former Transkei homeland and the urban offices of the Sonke Gender Justice Network in Cape Town, Reed argues that nostalgic memories of a time when African culture was not under attack, combined with the socioeconomic failures of the post-apartheid state, set the stage for the current political ambivalence in South Africa. Beyond simply being a case study, however, Nostalgia after Apartheid shows how, in a global context in which nationalism and authoritarianism continue to rise, the threat posed to democracy in South Africa has far wider implications for thinking about enactments of democracy. Dell'Orto finds that reductive media discourse (as seen during the 1967 War in the Middle East or Afghanistan in the 1980s) has a negative effect on policy, whereas correspondence grounded in events (such as during the Japanese attack on Shanghai in the 1930s or the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991) fosters effective leadership and realistic assessments.

Marshaling forms of historical evidence that include passbooks, memoirs, American “B” movies, literary and genre fiction, magazines, and photocomics, Black Cultural Life in South Africa considers the importance of popular genres and audiences in the relationship between ethical consciousness and aesthetic engagement. This study provocatively posits that states of oppression, including colonial and postcolonial rule, can elicit ethical responses to imaginative identification through encounters with popular culture, and it asks whether and how they carry over into ethical action.
