Book excerpt: Patrick Hunt s Alpine Archaeology is born out of more than a decade of widespread high altitude archaeological field research in the Alps. The observations in this research study were made over time in a number of different field seasons and therefore, gradually built up over the years. The author conducted this study while directing the Stanford Alpine Archaeological Project. Alpine archaeology is a specialized field where normal archaeological principles such as stratigraphy, pedology, data recording, anthropogenic features, materials analyses etc. apply but where contextual and climatic conditions are considerably unique. Higher altitudes and cold climate impact archaeological research and its practice in many different ways and influence the survival and preservation of both organic substances and metal objects as less oxidation and lower diffusion rates in the alpine environment noticeably inhibit the decomposition and corrosion of artifactual material. While observations in the first part of the book have been derived mostly from fieldwork in the Grand-St-Bernard region, those discussed in the second part are derived from the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project s most important ongoing research, which is focused on attempting to trace Hannibal s route over the Alps in 218 BCE. Hunt completed his PhD in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London in 1991. He is on the Classics and Archaeology faculty at Stanford University, where he has been Director of the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project since 1994. His Hannibal research is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, with a grant from their Expedition Council for 2007 2008. "

No publication can match the impact and immediacy of The Dailys front page. Through headlines, articles, photographs, weather reports, ads, and more, these pages provide a rough draft of history as it occurred. Told from a students point of view, the coverage of campus news is straightforward and exciting. Each front page in this compilation has been digitally imaged from the original bound volumes in the Universitys archives and is presented in its entirety, exactly as it ran. Book excerpt: Sustaining and strengthening local livelihoods is one of the most fundamental challenges faced by post-conflict countries. By degrading the natural resources that are essential to livelihoods and by significantly hindering access to those resources, conflict can wreak havoc on the ability of war-torn populations to survive and recover. This book explores how natural resource management initiatives in more than twenty countries and territories have supported livelihoods and facilitated post-conflict peacebuilding. Case studies and analyses identify lessons and opportunities for the more effective design of interventions to support the livelihoods that depend on natural resources – from land to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and protected areas. The book also explores larger questions about how to structure livelihoods assistance as part of a coherent, integrated approach to post-conflict redevelopment. Livelihoods and Natural Resources in Post-Conflict Peacebuilding is part of a global initiative to identify and analyze lessons in post-conflict peacebuilding and natural resource management. The project has generated six books of case studies and analyses, with contributions from practitioners, policy makers, and researchers. Other books in this series address high value resources, land, water, assessing and restoring natural resources, and governance.
