Book excerpt: Frank Hazard relentlessly disregards political correctness in Standard of Conduct, a trenchant satire and hilarious comedy that depicts a day in the life of what the author calls an Ivy League dunce. The brisk narrative follows an Ivy League dunce and businessman named Walsh as he proceeds from his New York City apartment in the morning to his office downtown in the financial district to a meeting hours later with another businessman for lunch at a private club and, ultimately, to a prestigious clothing store, where he intends to buy an expensive red silk robe that raffishly allures him. There are shrewd, perceptive vignettes comprising an irresistible panoply of unique characters that include Walsh and his intellectually fastidious secretary, a former ballerina, and her fiancé, a forlorn artist whose career has perilously stalled; a young woman who toils in a real estate office as she indefatigably dreams of becoming a novelist; supercilious diplomats and diffident poets, indignant critics and deceitful lawyers; plutocrats and pedagogues and publishers, and two vainglorious groups called SOMPs and VOBs—delineated with acute, wry humor and keenly incisive wit. Deftly enhanced by vigorous, eloquent, and inventive language as lyrical as music, Standard of Conduct is a hilarious literary satire and superior entertainment as topical as it is timeless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising final chapter of a great American life. When the first volume of Mark Twain’s uncensored Autobiography was published in 2010, it was hailed as an essential addition to the shelf of his works and a crucial document for our understanding of the great humorist’s life and times. This third and final volume crowns and completes his life’s work. Like its companion volumes, it chronicles Twain's inner and outer life through a series of daily dictations that go wherever his fancy leads. Created from March 1907 to December 1909, these dictations present Mark Twain at the end of his life: receiving an honorary degree from Oxford University; railing against Theodore Roosevelt; founding numerous clubs; incredulous at an exhibition of the Holy Grail; credulous about the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays; relaxing in Bermuda; observing (and investing in) new technologies. The Autobiography’s "Closing Words" movingly commemorate his daughter Jean, who died on Christmas Eve 1909. Also included in this volume is the previously unpublished "Ashcroft-Lyon Manuscript," Mark Twain’s caustic indictment of his "putrescent pair" of secretaries and the havoc that erupted in his house during their residency. Fitfully published in fragments at intervals throughout the twentieth century, Autobiography of Mark Twain has now been critically reconstructed and made available as it was intended to be read. Fully annotated by the editors of the Mark Twain Project, the complete Autobiography emerges as a landmark publication in American literature. Editors: Benjamin Griffin and Harriet Elinor Smith Associate Editors: Victor Fischer, Michael B. Frank, Amanda Gagel, Sharon K. Goetz, Leslie Diane Myrick, Christopher M. Ohge

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What guidance can Buddhism provide to those involved in armed conflict and to belligerents who must perhaps kill or be killed or defend their families, communities or countries from attack? How, moreover, does Buddhism compare with international humanitarian law (IHL) – otherwise known as the law of armed conflict – which protects non-combatants and restricts the means and methods of warfare to limit the suffering it causes? Despite the prevalence of armed conflict in parts of the Buddhist world, few contemporary studies have addressed these questions. While there is a wealth of material on Buddhist conflict prevention and resolution, remarkably little attention has been paid to what Buddhism says about the actual conduct of war. IHL is also still relatively little known in the Buddhist world and might not therefore influence the behaviour of belligerents who self-identify as Buddhists and are perhaps more likely to be guided by Buddhist principles. This ground-breaking volume is part of an International Committee of the Red Cross project which seeks to fill this gap by exploring correspondences between Buddhist and IHL principles, and by identifying Buddhist resources to improve compliance with IHL and equivalent Buddhist or humanitarian norms. This book will be of much interest to students and researchers of International Law, Buddhism, Ethics as well as War and Conflict studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Buddhism.

This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable resource for any athletic training curriculum, this text introduces athletic training as a profession by presenting an ethical framework of values, principles, and theory. Chapters explore important issues related to cultural competence, foundational behaviors of professional practice, professional and moral behavior, and ethical decision-making - skills that both inform and transcend the athletic training profession. Learning activities at the end of each section help you see connections between the material and clinical practice, revealing new insights about yourself, your profession, and the organizations with which you will interact. Content draws connections between ethical values, principles, and theory, as relating to the Foundational Behaviors of Professional Practice. Over 100 case studies promote critical thinking with clinical examples of ethical situations and conflicts that correspond to the domains identified by the Board of Certification (BOC) Role Delineation Study. Learning Activities chapters at the end of each section provide over 60 activities designed to link content and theory to clinical practice. Organized into three levels, Level One consists of an introduction to professional ethics in athletic training, Level Two focuses on professional enculturation, and Level Three explores the application of ethical concepts in professional life. Good to Know boxes highlight information throughout the chapters to enrich content and identify applications in the field. Professional Pearl boxes contain quotes from NATA Hall of Fame Inductees, offering advice about the challenges often faced in the profession. Chapter outlines, learning objectives, and ethical concepts at the beginning of each chapter lay out the information in an easy-to-follow framework. Appendices include self-assessment and evaluation tools that encourage you to assess where your own responses fall within ethical boundaries. Sections on cultural competence and ethical dilemmas increase awareness of diversity by exploring scenarios in which the practitioner's and patient's morals may conflict.
