It also covers boundary control with suction since both these cases are mathematically identical. The stability is proved with respect to perturbations which have the shape of longitudinal vortices with constant spacing. The neutral curve is calculated. The perturbations are introduced into the complete Navier-Stokes equations and then are linearized. Full account is also taken of the geometric influence of curvature. The asymptotic solution is derived analytically. Near the wall a numerical solution is derived by applying the Runge-Kutta method. Both solutions are fitted to derivatives which occur in the differential equations. Thus a complete fit of the two solutions is attained. The neutral curves are presented in a diagram for different curvature parameters for walls with leading edge and with the shape of the evolute of a circle.

The second order approximation is taken in account. The general condition for self similar solutions and the corresponding differential equation are derived, which include as limiting cases for zero wall curvature the flows along a flat plate and along a wedge as well as the stagnation point flow at a circular cylinder. Constant pressure along the wall corresponds to walls curved like evolvents of a circle with sharp leading edge. A transformation is introduced which simplifies the analysis considerably and yields formal analogies to the plane wall. Furthermore the influence of curvature on heat transfer for walls of constant temperature and for isolated walls is determined in dependency of Prandtl number. Some of the results are the increase of shear stress and heat transfer at concave and decrease at convex walls, the influence on the exponent of the Prandtl number in the expression for the Nusselt number. Reference is payed to previous attempts and to numerical results obtained by the second order singular perturbation theory applied to a circular cylinder in cross flow. (Author).

The pressure gradient in the mean flow is accounted for by solving the non-similar boundary-layer equations. Growth rates are obtained for the actual mean flow and compared with those for the Blasius flow and the Falkner-Skan flows. The results demonstrate the strong influence of the pressure gradient and the nonsimilarity of the basic flow on the stability characteristics. (Author).

Furthermore, the study of the origin of turbulence is part of the fundamental physical problem of turbulence description and the philosophical problem of determinism and chaos. At the end of the nineteenth century, Reynolds and Rayleigh conjectured that the reason of the transition of laminar flow to the 'sinuous' state is in stability which results in amplification of wavy disturbances and breakdown of the laminar regime. Heisenberg (1924) was the founder of linear hydrody namic stability theory. The first calculations of boundary layer stability were fulfilled in pioneer works of Tollmien (1929) and Schlichting (1932, 1933). Later Taylor (1936) hypothesized that the transition to turbulence is initi ated by free-stream oscillations inducing local separations near wall. Up to the 1940s, skepticism of the stability theory predominated, in particular due to the experimental results of Dryden (1934, 1936). Only the experiments of Schubauer and Skramstad (1948) revealed the determining role of insta bility waves in the transition. Now it is well established that the transition to turbulence in shear flows at small and moderate levels of environmental disturbances occurs through development of instability waves in the initial laminar flow. In Chapter 1 we start with the fundamentals of stability theory, employing results of the early studies and recent advances.
