Book excerpt: Recently, mostly due to global warming concerns and high oil prices, electric vehicles have attracted a great deal of interest as an elegant solution to environmental and energy problems. In addition to the fact that electric vehicles have no tailpipe emissions and are more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles, they represent more versatile platforms on which to apply advanced motion control techniques. The focus of this book is to develop effective control strategies to improve driving dynamics and safety based on the philosophy of individually monitoring and controlling the tire forces on each wheel. A two-passenger electric all-wheel-drive urban vehicle with four in-wheel motors and an active steering system is designed and developed in this work. Based on this platform, a number of different stability and traction control systems have been developed using soft computing techniques. Finally, these control systems are integrated with each other and the performance and effectiveness of each stability control system is evaluated and compared using some standard test maneuvers.

Book excerpt: Recently, mostly due to global warming concerns and high oil prices, electric vehicles have attracted a great deal of interest as an elegant solution to environmental and energy problems. In addition to the fact that electric vehicles have no tailpipe emissions and are more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles, they represent more versatile platforms on which to apply advanced motion control techniques, since motor torque and speed can be generated and controlled quickly and precisely. The chassis control systems developed today are distinguished by the way the individual subsystems work in order to provide vehicle stability and control. However, the optimum driving dynamics can only be achieved when the tire forces on all wheels and in all three directions can be influenced and controlled precisely. This level of control requires that the vehicle is equipped with various chassis control systems that are integrated and networked together. Drive-by-wire electric vehicles with in-wheel motors provide the ideal platform for developing the required control system in such a situation. The focus of this thesis is to develop effective control strategies to improve driving dynamics and safety based on the philosophy of individually monitoring and controlling the tire forces on each wheel. A two-passenger electric all-wheel-drive urban vehicle (AUTO21EV) with four direct-drive in-wheel motors and an active steering system is designed and developed in this work. Based on this platform, an advanced fuzzy slip control system, a genetic fuzzy yaw moment controller, an advanced torque vectoring controller, and a genetic fuzzy active steering controller are developed, and the performance and effectiveness of each is evaluated using some standard test maneuvers. Finally, these control systems are integrated with each other by taking advantage of the strengths of each chassis control system and by distributing the required control effort between the in-wheel motors and the active steering system. The performance and effectiveness of the integrated control approach is evaluated and compared to the individual stability control systems, again based on some predefined standard test maneuvers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Hybrid-electric vehicles have been available to consumers for over a decade, and plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles are rapidly becoming mainstream products with the introduction of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf in 2011. These vehicles have in common an electric powertrain, comprised of one or more electric motors and of a battery pack which in the case of hybrid vehicles supplements and internal combustion engine. It is well understood that hybrid and electric vehicles have the benefit of significant reduction in CO2 emissions and in the use of petroleum as a fuel. However, one additional benefit of hybrid and electric vehicles remains so far under-utliized: the use of the electric traction system to enhance vehicle stability control. This potentially or low cost feature could provide additional motivation for customers to choose hybrid or electric vehicles over conventional ones. This dissertation documents the conception and development of a novel control strategy to allocate braking and tractive forces in a hybrid electric vehicle equipped with axle motors, for the purpose of enhancing the vehicle stability control system. The work described in this dissertation documents the development of a hierarchical control strategy, its design and stability proofs, and its evaluation using software and model in-the-loop methods. The work includes the development of a dynamic HEV simulator that is capable of evaluating vehicle dynamics responses during emergency maneuvers, to demonstrate its stability. For this purpose, a hybrid powertrain simulation model including batteries, motors, differential, shaft, wheel, and electro-hydraulic brake system models are developed. Furthermore, a simple yet reliable vehicle dynamics model is integrated with the powertrain model to capture longitudinal, lateral, yaw and roll degrees of freedoms of the vehicle. The development of the simulator is a minor, but an original contribution of this dissertation. The principal contribution of this work is a novel and systematic vehicle stability control (VSC) strategy that distributes the corrective longitudinal force and yaw moment action to generate individual wheel slip ratios by blending regenerative axle motor braking and/or traction with individual wheel braking; so as to track the desired vehicle speed and yaw rate without causing excessive vehicle sideslip angles. This dissertation shows that including the axle electric motors within the proposed VSC frame, improves the performance of vehicle stability control in comparison to production vehicle VSC strategies. The potential benefit of electric motors, namely their ability to provide rapid braking/tractive torque actuation, is utilized in addition to the friction brakes within the proposed VSC scheme. The resulting strategy is the first published result that shows that yaw tracking and vehicle stabilization can be performed without interfering in the driver's longitudinal speed demand. Furthermore, the strategy limits the yaw rate in order to keep the vehicle sideslip angle in the safe range, by increasing the understeer coefficient whenever a sideslip angle safety threshold is exceeded. A secondary benefit of the proposed VSC scheme is its energy saving feature, thanks to the use of highly efficient electric motors and their regenerative braking capability in comparison to a standard vehicle stability control schemes that use only the brake and engine intervention. Finally, the proposed VSC strategy is tested in real time, by using a model-in-the-loop simulation set-up, using state-of-the-art hardware-in-the-loop computer systems. Model-in-the-loop simulation results for different road conditions and steering maneuvers showed that the proposed VSC performs satisfactorily in real time as well, suggesting that is amenable to in-vehicle implementation.

Book excerpt: An integrated vehicle controller is presented for electric vehicles using independently driven wheel motors. This topology takes an optimal control approach to enhancing a vehicle's performance, stability, and energy consumption metrics simultaneously in a unified software structure. The logical output of this algorithm is a set of re-distributed wheel torques, to create torque vectoring for stability-focused yaw rate tracking, and longitudinal biasing to modify motor load for energy savings. A real-time numerical approach to solving the optimization problem is also presented, and shown to offer benefits over a closed form analytic approach. In this, solution constraints are used to link considerations such as nonlinear motor limits, tire friction envelopes, and lower-level traction control loops. To test the efficacy of this control structure, two vehicle test platforms were constructed as retrofits of production gas SUVs for electric drive. For this, the component layout is given, followed by an explanation of the software code structure as performed in a Simulink/Carsim/dSpace environment. Results from these platforms are given, with experimental and simulation data for traction control, yaw performance tracking and drive cycle power consumption. Proven performance over a variety of maneuvers and surface conditions further demonstrate the controller's stability and suitability for mass production.

Since the development of the internal combustion engine and its application to the transportation sector, people are becoming dependent on a more economic and comfortable way of traveling. However, besides all the benefits that combustion engines can provide, the abusive use of fossil fuels, its constant increase of price and recent environmental concerns led to a new form of mobility, supported on a technology already used in the past: the electric motor. Having this in consideration, this book aims at analyzing and discussing the control domain in electric mobility concerning the permanent magnet synchronous motors, in particular an application of a 150kW motor for an electric bus. It is presented the design of the controller that drives the motor, allowing its driving and braking, with the ability to regenerate braking energy for recharging the batteries. Also, the system is capable of working without speed or position sensors.
