Book excerpt: An analysis was performed to investigate the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of an ejector wing configuration V/STOL in transition. A derivative approach was used to obtain dynamic responses about specified trim speeds, and analysis of these responses provided an insight into the significant characteristics that might affect the pilot's control over the aircraft. The thrust levels necessary to meet the control requirements specified in MIL-F-83300 for a Level 1 category vehicle were determined as well. A similar study was made for a stowable rotor configuration, and results for the stowable rotor V/STOL and the ejector wing configuration were compared. Finally, the downwash characteristics of the ejector wing configuration were evaluated in terms of their effect on ground equipment and personnel. Spray generation during hover over water is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.

Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation at high subsonic speeds has been conducted to determine the effect of fuselage forebody strakes on the static stability and the vertical-tail-load characteristics of an airplane-type configuration having a delta wing. The tests were made at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 0.92 corresponding to Reynolds numbers from 3,000,000 to 4,200,000, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord, and at angles of attack from approximately -2 to 24 degrees.

Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis, based on the linearized equation for supersonic flow, of characteristics of triangular-tip control surfaces on thin triangular wings. By restriction to case for which Mach lines from wing apex lie behind the leading edge, a simplified treatment was possible; results of previous work on lift of triangular wings could be used to derive expressions for lift effectiveness, pitching moment, rolling-moment effectiveness, hinge moment due to control deflection, and hinge moment due to angle of attack. Comparisons were made with two-dimensional case.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of a full scale executive type jet transport aircraft with a T-tail were investigated in a 40 x 80 ft (12.2 by 24.4 meter) wind tunnel (subsonic). Static, longitudinal, and lateral stability, and control characteristics were determined at angles of attack from -2 deg to 42 deg. The aircraft wing had 13 deg of sweep and an aspect ratio of 5.02. The aircraft was tested power off with various wing leading- and trailing-edge high lift devices. The basic configuration was tested with and without such components as engine nacelles, wing tip tanks, and empannage. Hinge-moment data were obtained and downwash angles in the horizontal-tail plane location were calculated. The data were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 4.1 million and 8.7 million based on mean aerodynamic chord. The model had static longitudinal stability through initial stall. Severe tail buffet occurred near the angle of attack for maximum lift. Above initial stall the aircraft had pronounced pitch-up, characteristic of T-tail configurations. A stable trim point was possible at angles of attack between 30 deg and 40 deg (depending on c.g. location and flap setting). Hinge-moment data showed no regions with adverse effects on stick force. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data and flight-test are presented.
