Book Synopsis Stability of Fluid Motions I by : D. D. Joseph
Download or read book Stability of Fluid Motions I written by D. D. Joseph and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of stability aims at understanding the abrupt changes which are observed in fluid motions as the external parameters are varied. It is a demanding study, far from full grown"whose most interesting conclusions are recent. I have written a detailed account of those parts of the recent theory which I regard as established. Acknowledgements I started writing this book in 1967 at the invitation of Clifford Truesdell. It was to be a short work on the energy theory of stability and if I had stuck to that I would have finished the writing many years ago. The theory of stability has developed so rapidly since 1967 that the book I might then have written would now have a much too limited scope. I am grateful to Truesdell, not so much for the invitation to spend endless hours of writing and erasing, but for the generous way he has supported my efforts and encouraged me to higher standards of good work. I have tried to follow Truesdell's advice to write this work in a clear and uncomplicated style. This is not easy advice for a former sociologist to follow; if I have failed it is not due to a lack of urging by him or trying by me. My research during the years 1969-1970 was supported in part by a grant from the Guggenheim foundation to study in London.

Book Synopsis Elementary Stability and Bifurcation Theory by : G. Iooss
Download or read book Elementary Stability and Bifurcation Theory written by G. Iooss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its most general form bifurcation theory is a theory of equilibrium solutions of nonlinear equations. By equilibrium solutions we mean, for example, steady solutions, time-periodic solutions, and quasi-periodic solutions. The purpose of this book is to teach the theory of bifurcation of equilibrium solutions of evolution problems governed by nonlinear differential equations. We have written this book for the broaqest audience of potentially interested learners: engineers, biologists, chemists, physicists, mathematicians, econom ists, and others whose work involves understanding equilibrium solutions of nonlinear differential equations. To accomplish our aims, we have thought it necessary to make the analysis 1. general enough to apply to the huge variety of applications which arise in science and technology, and 2. simple enough so that it can be understood by persons whose mathe matical training does not extend beyond the classical methods of analysis which were popular in the 19th Century. Of course, it is not possible to achieve generality and simplicity in a perfect union but, in fact, the general theory is simpler than the detailed theory required for particular applications. The general theory abstracts from the detailed problems only the essential features and provides the student with the skeleton on which detailed structures of the applications must rest. It is generally believed that the mathematical theory of bifurcation requires some functional analysis and some of the methods of topology and dynamics.

Download or read book Elementary Stability and Bifurcation Theory written by Gerard Iooss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantially revised second edition teaches the bifurcation of asymptotic solutions to evolution problems governed by nonlinear differential equations. Written not just for mathematicians, it appeals to the widest audience of learners, including engineers, biologists, chemists, physicists and economists. For this reason, it uses only well-known methods of classical analysis at foundation level, while the applications and examples are specially chosen to be as varied as possible.
Book Synopsis Wave Packets and Their Bifurcations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics by : Huijun Yang
Download or read book Wave Packets and Their Bifurcations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics written by Huijun Yang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material in this book is based predominantly on my recent work. It is the first monograph on the subject, though some support material may overlap other monographs. The investigation of wave packets and their bi furcations is very interesting, and useful theoretically and in practice, not only in geophysical fluid dynamics, which is the field to which the theory is being applied here, but also in other fields in mathematics and the natural sciences. I hope that the applied mathematician will find reading this book worthwhile, especially the material on the behavior of highly nonlinear dy namic systems. However, it is my belief that applying the concepts and methods developed here to other fields will be both interesting and con structive, since there are numerous phenomena in other areas of physics that share the characteristics of those in geophysical fluid dynamics. The theory developed here provides an effective tool to investigate the structure and the structural changes of dynamic systems in physics. Applications of the theory in geophysical fluid dynamics are an example of its usefulness and effectiveness. Some of the results presented here give us more insight into the nature of geophysical fluids. Moreover, the material is presented systematically and developmentally. Necessary basic knowledge is provided to make the book more readable for graduate students and researchers in such fields as applied mathematics, geophysical fluid dynamics, atmospheric sciences, and physical oceanogra phy.

Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications Metastability and Incompletely Posed Problems represents the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 19R4-R5 IMA program on CONTINUUM PHYSICS AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EOIIATIONS. We are grateful to the Scientific Committee: ,I.L. Eri cksen D. Kinderlehrer H. Rrezis C. Dafermos for their dedication and hard work in developing an imaginative, stimulating, and productive year-long program. George R. Sell Hans Weinberger Preface Most equilibrium events in nature do not realize configurations of minimum energy. They are only metastable. Available knowledge of constitutive relations and environmental interactions may be limiterl. As a result, many configurations may he compatible with the rlata. Such questions are incompletely poserl. The papers in this volume address a wide variety of these issues as they are perceived by the material scientist and the mathematician. They represent a portion of the significant activity which has been underway in recent years, from the experimental arena and physical theory to the analysis of differential equations and computation.
