The New Oxford History of England, of which this is the first volume, is its successor. Book Synopsis A History of Russian Literature by : Andrew Kahn
Download or read book A History of Russian Literature written by Andrew Kahn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia possesses one of the richest and most admired literatures of Europe, reaching back to the eleventh century. A History of Russian Literature provides a comprehensive account of Russian writing from its earliest origins in the monastic works of Kiev up to the present day, still rife with the creative experiments of post-Soviet literary life. The volume proceeds chronologically in five parts, extending from Kievan Rus' in the 11th century to the present day. The coverage strikes a balance between extensive overview and in-depth thematic focus. Parts are organized thematically in chapters, which a number of keywords that are important literary concepts that can serve as connecting motifs and 'case studies', in-depth discussions of writers, institutions, and texts that take the reader up close and personal. Visual material also underscores the interrelation of the word and image at a number of points, particularly significant in the medieval period and twentieth century. The History addresses major continuities and discontinuities in the history of Russian literature across all periods, and in particular brings out trans-historical features that contribute to the notion of a national literature. The volume's time range has the merit of identifying from the early modern period a vital set of national stereotypes and popular folklore about boundaries, space, Holy Russia, and the charismatic king that offers culturally relevant material to later writers. This volume delivers a fresh view on a series of key questions about Russia's literary history, by providing new mappings of literary history and a narrative that pursues key concepts (rather more than individual authorial careers). This holistic narrative underscores the ways in which context and text are densely woven in Russian literature, and demonstrates that the most exciting way to understand the canon and the development of tradition is through a discussion of the interrelation of major and minor figures, historical events and literary politics, literary theory and literary innovation.
Book Synopsis Financial Regulation and Stability by : Charles Goodhart
Download or read book Financial Regulation and Stability written by Charles Goodhart and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the interaction of monetary and regulatory policy to achieve the important goal of price and financial stability. The authors show how financial stability can be assessed and measured continuously, and discuss the interrelationships between liquidity and default. Without default there would be no concern about liquidity. But the financial crisis was not just a liquidity problem, and requires a general equilibrium model. Their general equilibrium analysis demonstrates how policy should depend on understanding all the relevant factors.

Book excerpt: The word-wide impact of evangelicalism has long been recognized as a vital force. Providing both a clear and accessible guide to the recent literature, this introduction examines the revival in the British Isles during the 18th and 19th-century within a broadly international context. By investigating the nature of the revival and emphasizing its link with popular culture, this analysis explores the centrality of religion in this period. Posing questions such a "how far was the revival a threat to order?" And "what was its influence on society?" This work provides an introduction to the topic for all A-level and undergraduate students of 18th and 19th-century British history.

Book Synopsis Rowland Hill by : Vernon J. Charlesworth
Download or read book Rowland Hill written by Vernon J. Charlesworth and published by Aneko Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rowland Hill was humorous, but he was a great deal more, and those who know his lifework will not remember him as exemplifying one single quality, but as a good, childlike man in whom nothing for Christ was restrained. Considering him as he was overall, we will not soon see anyone like him again. There was no dishonesty or duplicity in him. He loved his Lord and the souls of men, and he threw all his might into the pursuit of doing good. Certainly few men were ever more unselfish. People called him eccentric because they themselves were out of center. With his great heart, calm soul, wise mind, and loving nature, he had learned to wait upon his Lord, and so had found the right center and true course for his being. At first, the press had its sneers for him, but it could not lessen the respect in which he was held, and in due time it turned around and joined in the chorus of his praise. His riper years were full of honor, and like his younger days, they were full of fruit unto God.
