Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wonderful new book contains more than 200 fascinating photographs, maps, and prints and brings to life the people, places, and events which have defined Scotch Plains and Fanwood over the centuries. These images invite us to explore the area's rich history from the time of its first settlement, in 1684, to the present day. Scotch Plains and Fanwood were originally one community, also encompassing the area now known as Feltville or Glenside Park. From the beginning, the region played a critical role in American history. The Battle of the Short Hills, from June 14 to June 30, 1777, between the British under General Howe and the Revolutionary Army under George Washington, took place here. During the nineteenth century, Scotch Plains became an important stop on the "Swift Sure" stage line between New York and Philadelphia. As New York City burgeoned during the nineteenth century and the railroad arrived in Central New Jersey, Scotch Plains and Fanwood became a bedroom community of the metropolis. Finally, in 1895, Fanwood was chartered independently. Later, Feltville became part of the Union County Park System.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive resource for teaching spiritual leadership development in the twenty-first century—for all faith traditions. America is changing. Technology, social networking, global economics, immigration, migration and multiculturalism urge communities of faith to expand their vision of spiritual leadership and reflect on how leaders can better serve congregations and communities in the twenty-first century. In this multifaith, cross-cultural and comprehensive resource for both clergy and lay persons, contributors who are experts in the field explore how to engage spiritual leaders and teach them how to bring healing, faith, justice and support to communities and congregations. They offer tools, advice, practical methodologies and case studies on how stakeholders—congregational leaders, ordained religious leaders, educators, students and community leaders—learn how to do theology in context and grow into faith leadership roles.

Book excerpt: Teach, build, and serve, a legend taken from the mission statement of the Archdiocese of Newark, encompasses the vibrant spirit emblematic of this see from official conception in 1853 through its sesquicentennial observance in 2003. Those who call the archdiocese home share a common religious history and a collective picture of their faith in action from old-world roots. Generations of Catholics who live in the northern New Jersey counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union have shared such devotions as attending Mass, special feast days, parochial education, organizational affiliations, church socials, and many other articles of celebration with their families, friends, priests, religious sisters, and others who collectively define the essence of neighborly communion. This volume provides a basic narrative and visual overview designed to honor the individuals, milestones, and varied landmarks that make the Archdiocese of Newark memorable and inspirational.

Download or read book Laugh Lines written by Alan Zweibel and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his tender, funny memoir of four decades in the business, one of the first writers for Saturday Night Live traces the history of American comedy. Alan Zweibel started his comedy career selling jokes for seven dollars apiece to the last of the Borscht Belt standups. Then one night, despite bombing on stage, he caught the attention of Lorne Michaels and became one of the first writers at Saturday Night Live, where he penned classic material for Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and all of the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players. From SNL, he went on to have a hand in a series of landmark shows—from It’s Garry Shandling’s Show to Curb Your Enthusiasm. Throughout the pages of Laugh Lines Zweibel weaves together his own stories and interviews with his friends and contemporaries, including Richard Lewis, Eric Idle, Bob Saget, Mike Birbiglia, Sarah Silverman, Judd Apatow, Dave Barry, Carl Reiner, and more. The book also features a charming foreword from his friend of forty-five years Billy Crystal, with whom he co-wrote and co-produced the upcoming film Here Today that stars Crystal and Tiffany Haddish. Laugh Lines is a warmhearted cultural memoir of American comedy. “In Laugh Lines, Zweibel looks back, affectionately and informatively, at a career that began when he was a young deli worker grinding out jokes for old-school borscht belt comedians in his spare time, and that, after his “S.N.L.” years, included rewarding collaborations with, among others, Garry Shandling, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Larry David and Dave Barry. . . . Fascinating.” —New York Times “Any comedy fan will thrill to see the contemporary art's invention through the eyes of consummate funny man Alan Zweibel. He takes you behind the velvet rope and makes you weep for all those artists who made us laugh. Screamingly funny—also very moving. A classic.” —Mary Karr “Alan Zweibel is legendary among us comedians. He is the man who delivers comedy with an emotional clout that makes him respected and revered.” —Steve Martin
