Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a good presentation of the philosophy of Sri Madhvacarya, complete in its architectonic unity. The author probes its ontological and epistemological foundations, and critcally examines the structure erected on them. The discussion focuses on crucial doctrines of theism, and brings to light for the first time the striking parallelisms of thought between Madhva and his Western contemporary St. Thomas Aquinas. Light is also thrown on how Madhva and his commentators anticipated the views of modern philosophers like Spencer, Russell and Hobhouse on the nature of time, space and memory. The latest researches on Madhvacarya's role in the Vedantic Bhakti movement and his attempt to harmonize the Upanisadic texts on monism and dualism are substantially drawn upon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord Almighty in the form of Sage Vedavyasa composed the epic Bhagavata Maha Purana to expand on the spiritual concepts contained in the Vedas using episodes and anecdotes from the Lord’s various incarnations and the experiences of His devotees. It is a guidebook to society to illustrate human and ethical values. The Bhagavata Maha Purana is structured as a conversation between King Pariksit and sage Shuka and is spread over 12 cantos with 18000 verses. The eleventh canto has 1373 verses spread among 31 chapters. While the tenth canto has the authentic account of the incarnation and activities of Lord Sri Krishna, the eleventh canto has core messages from the Lord to humankind. The Bhagavad Gita [BG], the song celestial, which has the sermon from Lord Krishna to prince Arjuna, which is the most revered text among Hindu scriptures, is part of the great epic Mahabharata. Uddhava Gita, the divine conversation between Uddhava, an aide, and an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, and Lord Krishna Himself is spread over 23 chapters (chapters 7 to 29), in 1033 verses (about 75% of 11th Canto). This has many parallels with the Gita and reads like a commentary on the Gita. In Gita, the Lord responds to many philosophical questions from Arjuna and many of those critical questions are explained in more detail in Uddhava Gita with examples and anecdotes. Excellent interpretation of the critical aspects of this epic can be found in the works of the 12th century ascetic Sri Madhwacharya. Other savants in his lineage such as Sri Vadiraja Teertha, Sri Raghavendra Teertha, Sri Vijayadhwaja Teertha, Sri Satyabhinava Teertha, Sri Satyadharma Teertha have contributed tremendously to summarize and expand on the key concepts. This book attempts to provide a simple translation in English of the 111h canto along with summary and interpretations based on the lectures by His Holiness Sri Vidyasagara Madhava Teertha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a culmination of multiple efforts of the authors to fill in the gap for offering a required course on Indian Knowledge System (IKS), recently mandated by AICTE. Moreover, the New Education Policy (NEP) has also provided a clear trajectory for imparting IKS in the higher education curriculum, necessitating a book of this kind in several higher education institutions in the country in the days to come. The book seeks to introduce the epistemology and ontology of IKS to the Engineering and Science students in a way they can relate, appreciate and explore further should there be a keen interest in the matter. After a brief section on the key concepts of IKS, the remaining part of the book traces IKS and brings out the applications. After a formal and concise introduction to IKS, the book provides certain foundational concepts applicable across all domains of Science and Engineering. These form the second part. The Science applications are laid out in Part 3, Engineering applications in Part 4 and other important topics in the final part of the book. The authors have rich expertise and background in both 'mainstream issues' and 'traditional knowledge' to present IKS in a contextually relevant fashion. They have delicately balanced the 'why' or 'how' of IKS and the 'what' of IKS. Although the book has been primarily developed for use by the Engineering institutions, the structure and the contents also address the requirement in other University systems (Liberal Arts, Medicine, Science and Management). This textbook incorporates several pedagogical features including a companion website https://www.phindia.com/ introduction_to_indian_knowledge_system that will make learning effective and enjoyable for the students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chaitanya Vaishnava tradition is famous for its depth of devotion to Krishna, the blue-hued Deity. Chaitanya Vaishnavas are known for having refined the practice and aesthetics of devotion into a sophisticated science. This imposing devotional edifice was constructed upon a solid foundation of philosophical argument and understanding. In this book, Ravi Gupta sheds new light on the contribution of Chaitanya Vaishnavism to the realm of Indian philosophy. He explores the hermeneutical tools employed, the historical resources harnessed, the structure of the arguments made, and the relative success of the endeavor. For most schools of Vaishnavism, the supporting foundation consists of the philosophical resources provided by Vedanta. The Chaitanya tradition is remarkable in its ability to engage in Vedantic discourse and at the same time practice an ecstatic form of devotion to Krishna. The prime architect of this balance was the scholar-devotee Jiva Gosvami (ca. 1517 - 1608). This book analyses Jiva Gosvami's writing concerning the philosophy of the Vedanta tradition. It concludes that Jiva's writing crosses 'disciplinary boundaries', for he brought into dialogue four powerful streams of classical Hinduism: the various systems of Vedanta, the ecstatic bhakti movements, the Puranic commentarial tradition, and the aesthetic rasa theory of Sanskrit poetics. With training in and commitments to all of these traditions, Jiva Gosvami produced a distinctly Chaitanya Vaishnava system of theology.

But it is the stories of Krishna's childhood and his later exploits that have provided some of the most important and widespread sources of religious narrative in the Hindu religious landscape. This volume brings together new translations of representative samples of Krishna religious literature from a variety of genres -- classical, popular, regional, sectarian, poetic, literary, and philosophical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Srimad Bhagavad Gita is now widely recognised as a scriptural text of worldwide importance. Sri Ramanuja is one of the noted commentators on the Vedanta Sutras of Badarayana and the Bhagavad Gita. This has brought him recognition as one of the greatest exponents of Vedanta from the Vaishnava point of view. Swami Adidevananda, one of the distinguished scholarly monks of the Ramakrishna Order who retained his inherent Sri Vaishnava heritage, has translated the original verses and Sri Ramanuja’s commentary into English. This book is of special importance because it is the only English translation now available with the original Sanskrit commentary as well. The book opens with meditation on the Gita followed by the Gitartha-sangraha of Sri Yamunacharya with English translation. Swami Tapasyananda, who was a scholarly monk with deep devotional temperament and one of the Vice-Presidents of the Ramakrishna Order, has written a scholarly introduction to this work.
