Book Synopsis Essays in the History of the Physiological Sciences by : Claude Debru
Download or read book Essays in the History of the Physiological Sciences written by Claude Debru and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1995 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the physiological sciences remains a field of investigation open to scholars of different origins and specialties. Recently, historians of science and medicine have paid attention to contemporary disciplines like genetics and molecular biology, immunology and neurobiology. However, physiology, as a mother science, remains a field of considerable historical and epistemological interest, due to its unique wealth of data, interpretations, theoretical models, and especially, its unanswered questions. Scholars interested in the experimental as well as the conceptual and theoretical aspects of the history of the physiological sciences in their broadest sense, and concerned by their place within the national and international frameworks of biomedical research, currently feel the need to meet, exchange ideas, and look for future forms of cooperation. In this spirit, a conference was organised by the Centre Européen d'Histoire de la Médecine and was held at the Medical School of the University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg in March 1993. At this conference, we focused on the history of defined disciplines such as neurophysiology and endocrinology, as well as on international approaches to the history of the physiological sciences, in accordance with the research traditions and history of the University of Strasbourg.

Book Synopsis The Hermeneutics of the Subject by : Michel Foucault
Download or read book The Hermeneutics of the Subject written by Michel Foucault and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-04-02 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hermeneutics of the Subject is the third volume in the collection of Michel Foucault's lectures at the Collège de France, one of the world's most prestigious institutions. Faculty at the Collège give public lectures, in which they present works-in-progress on any subject of their choosing. Foucault's wide-ranging lectures influenced his groundbreaking works like The History of Sexuality and Discipline and Punish. In the lectures comprising this volume, Foucault focuses on how the "self" and the "care of the self" were convinced during the period of antiquity, beginning with Socrates. The problems of the ethical formation of the self, Foucault argues, form the background for our own questions about subjectivity and remain at the center of contemporary moral thought. This series of lectures throws new light on Foucault's final works and shows the full depth of his engagement with ancient thought. Lucid and provocative, The Hermeneutics of the Subject reveals Foucault at the height of his powers.
