Book excerpt: Once thought of as Indian hunting grounds with no permanent inhabitants, West Virginia is teeming with evidence of a thriving early native population. Today's farmers can hardly plow their fields without uncovering ancient artifacts, evidence of at least ten thousand years of occupation. Members of the Fort Ancient culture resided along the rich bottomlands of southern West Virginia during the Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric periods. Lost to time and rediscovered in the 1880s, Fort Ancient sites dot the West Virginia landscape. This volume explores sixteen of these sites, including Buffalo, Logan and Orchard. Archaeologist Darla Spencer excavates the fascinating lives of some of the Mountain State's earliest inhabitants in search of who these people were, what languages they spoke and who their descendants may be.

Book excerpt: Imagine a landscape alternating between groves of majestic hardwood and vast prairies. Filled with lush grasses, native plants, and sweet, clear streams and abundant with wildlife, it is a gracious land filled with promise. In the distance, smoke rises above a Native American village along one of the many trails in the area. A gathering of 10 to 15 wigwams is situated near a dancing ground and round council house in the area that would come to be known as Coral. So it had to be for the early settlers--Richard Tompkins, the Spencers, and the Brayton, Sponable, Blakesley, Belden, Tower, Bache, and Dunham men--who were the first to arrive in the fall of 1835. From these environs, these men continued toward the nearby valley that would become Marengo. While the majority staked their claims a short distance from the present-day intersection of Routes 20 and 23, it was Calvin Spencer, officially recognized as the city's founder, who built his cabin on the ground that was initially called Pleasant Grove, then Marengo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliomania, the almost obsessive collecting of rare books and early editions by the aristocracy, which peaked in 1812 with the sale of the Valdarfer Boccaccio, was fuelled in no small part by the work of the bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847). His most famous book, Bibliomania, popularised the word's use in England. The present work was first published in three volumes in 1817 and may be considered a continuation of Bibliomania in both style and content. Using a dialogue format with extensive footnotes, it covers all aspects of bibliography from early illuminated manuscripts and printed books through to contemporary book collectors and auctions. The work is notable for the number and quality of its illustrations. Volume 3 presents accounts of book collectors and auctions since 1811, and bibliographical and general indexes to the whole work. Dibdin's Bibliomania (revised edition, 1811) and his Reminiscences of a Literary Life (1836) are also reissued in this series.

Book excerpt: What would you do if, just weeks after your spouse's sudden death, you found out he was keeping secrets? Carol Ross Joynt was a successful TV producer and award-winning journalist in Washington, D.C. Her husband, Howard, owned a legendary restaurant in Georgetown. They had a young son, a happy marriage – a seeming fairy-tale life. But Howard’s sudden death changed everything. Carol was shocked to discover that her husband had secrets – financial secrets – including a $3 million debt to the IRS that still had to be settled. Carol was responsible for repaying the debt, unless she could prove she knew nothing about Howard’s fraudulent dealings and convince the government she was an innocent spouse. With no time to grieve, Carol was forced to immediately learn to manage her family’s legal and financial responsibilities, run Howard’s restaurant, hold her own career together, and raise their son as a solo parent. As she picked up the pieces and coped with her sadness and anger, she learned to become self-sufficient. Poignant, eye-opening, and at its core uplifting, Innocent Spouse is ultimately an inspiring story of strength and newfound independence in the face of loss and betrayal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1892, entrepreneur Joel Hurt invited Frederick Law Olmsted Sr. to Atlanta to design "an ideal suburb." Olmsted and his firm began designs and were in regular communication with Hurt. Members of the firm came to Atlanta during design and construction. Even with changing ownership, Olmsted's vision and plans were followed. The design became the last residential suburb designed by Olmsted--the only one in the Deep South. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is its segmented park. After reaching a peak of beauty in the 1930s, the park and neighborhood declined, and the park was threatened by an ill-conceived expressway. Olmsted and Hurt's dream of the linear park prevailed, and the park has been renovated to how it looked in its heyday. This is the story of how a handful of people preserved, protected, and enhanced the linear park so that it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
