Book Synopsis Spectrum Management for Science in the 21st Century by : National Research Council
Download or read book Spectrum Management for Science in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio observations of the cosmos are gathered by geoscientists using complex earth-orbiting satellites and ground-based equipment, and by radio astronomers using large ground-based radio telescopes. Signals from natural radio emissions are extremely weak, and the equipment used to measure them is becoming ever-more sophisticated and sensitive. The radio spectrum is also being used by radiating, or "active," services, ranging from aircraft radars to rapidly expanding consumer services such as cellular telephones and wireless internet. These valuable active services transmit radio waves and thereby potentially interfere with the receive-only, or "passive," scientific services. Transmitters for the active services create an artificial "electronic fog" which can cause confusion, and, in severe cases, totally blinds the passive receivers. Both the active and the passive services are increasing their use of the spectrum, and so the potential for interference, already strong, is also increasing. This book addresses the tension between the active services' demand for greater spectrum use and the passive users' need for quiet spectrum. The included recommendations provide a pathway for putting in place the regulatory mechanisms and associated supporting research activities necessary to meet the demands of both users.
Book Synopsis Spectrum Management by : Mark L. Goldstein
Download or read book Spectrum Management written by Mark L. Goldstein and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio frequency spectrum enables vital wireless communications services used by the federal gov¿t., businesses, and consumers. Spectrum capacity is necessary for wireless broadband (high-speed Internet access) and broadband deployment will boost the nation's capabilities in many important areas. As the demand for spectrum continues to increase, there is concern about adequate access to meet future needs. This report examines: (1) how the Nat. Telecomm. and Info. Admin. (NTIA) is managing spectrum needs of federal agencies; (2) how federal agencies are using and managing assigned spectrum; and (3) what steps NTIA has taken to meet recent initiatives aimed at making spectrum available for broadband. Illus. This is a print on demand report.

Book Synopsis The Need for Speed by : Robert E. Litan
Download or read book The Need for Speed written by Robert E. Litan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first-century telecommunications landscape is radically different from the one that prevailed as recently as the last decade of the twentieth century. Robert Litan and Hal Singer argue that given the speed of innovation in this sector, the Federal Communications Commission's outdated policies and rules are inhibiting investment in the telecom industry, specifically in fast broadband networks. This pithy handbook presents the kind of fundamental rethinking needed to bring communications policy in line with technological advances. Fast broadband has huge societal benefits, enabling all kinds of applications in telemedicine, entertainment, retailing, education, and energy that would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Those benefits would be even greater if the FCC adopted policies that encouraged more broadband providers, especially wireless providers, to make their services available in the roughly half of the country where consumers currently have no choice in wireline providers offering download speeds that satisfy the FCC's current standards. The authors' recommendations include allowing broadband providers to charge for premium delivery services; embracing a rule-of-reason approach to all matters involving vertical arrangements; stripping the FCC of its merger review authority because both the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department have the authority to stop anticompetitive mergers; eliminating the FCC's ability to condition spectrum purchases on the identity, business plans, or spectrum holdings of a bidder; and freeing telephone companies from outdated regulations that require them to maintain both a legacy copper network and a modem IP network. These changes and others advanced in this book would greatly enhance consumer welfare with respect to telecommunications services and the applications built around them.
Book Synopsis The ITU and Managing Satellite Orbital and Spectrum Resources in the 21st Century by : Audrey L. Allison
Download or read book The ITU and Managing Satellite Orbital and Spectrum Resources in the 21st Century written by Audrey L. Allison and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-05-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to satellite orbits and spectrum is managed by the ITU, a United Nations body that strives to extend the benefits of new technologies to the world, while ensuring equitable access to these resources. This book explores how the ITU approaches these dual missions in light of the increasing saturation of the geostationary orbit by a vibrant global satellite industry and the rising interests of developing countries in accessing these limited resources. These issues were the subject of debate at the 2012 World Radiocommunication Conference. This book describes and assesses various regulatory approaches undertaken to manage the increasing requests for access to space and especially access to spectrum and orbital locations in the geosynchronous or “The Clarke” orbit.
Book Synopsis Federal Strategic Spectrum Plan by : Yi Chan
Download or read book Federal Strategic Spectrum Plan written by Yi Chan and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores today's wireless technologies which are essential in supporting Federal agency missions crucial to the nation and enabling commercial and non-Federal public safety operations that support economic growth and safeguard lives and property. As changing government missions increase demands for mobility and agility, and private sector uses continue to expand, the spectrum's role as a critical asset intensifies. To ensure that United States' spectrum policy for the 21st Century continues to harness fully the power of the airwaves to meet Federal mission requirements and to enhance prosperity, President George W. Bush established the Spectrum Policy Initiative (Presidential Initiative) in 2003. As this book discusses, the goal is a U.S. spectrum policy for the 21st Century that will foster economic growth, ensure our national and homeland security, maintain U.S. global leadership in communications technology and services and satisfy other vital U.S. needs in areas such as public safety, scientific research, Federal transportation infrastructure, and law enforcement.
Book Synopsis Summary of a Forum on Spectrum Management Policy Reform by : National Research Council
Download or read book Summary of a Forum on Spectrum Management Policy Reform written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-05-17 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, the Department of Commerce's Spectrum Policy Initiative was established with the objective of promoting a more efficient and beneficial use of the spectrum. As part of that Initiative, a series of public forums about spectrum management policy was held. The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board was asked to organize one of these forums, a public forum to gather the views of a variety of government and private sector stakeholders about the impact of spectrum policy on their activities. This report presents a summary of those views. Among those included are those representing national defense, homeland security, aviation, science, public safety, amateur radio, cellular voice and data, and terrestrial broadcast uses of the spectrum. Although prepared by the NRC, the report does not present NRC findings or recommendations. A broader study of spectrum policy, including findings and recommendations, will be issued in early 2005.
