Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the Later English Poets, Vol. 3 of 3: With Preliminary Notices And yet I weep, a stranger to repose 0 what delusion did thy tongue employ That emma's fatal pledge of love, Her last bequest - with all a mother's care, The bitterness of sorrow should remove, Soften the horrors of despair, And chear a heart long lost to joy? How oft, when fondling in mine arms, Gazing enraptured on its angel-face, My soul the maze of Fate would vainly trace, And burn with all a father's fond alarms And 0 what flattering scenes had Fancy feign'd, How did I rave of blessings yet in store Till every aching sense was sweetly pain'd, And my full heart could bear, nor tongue could utter more Just Heaven, I cry'd - with recent hopes elate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the Later English Poets, Vol. 1 of 3: With Preliminary Notices The biographical notices might easily have been extended, had it been consistent with the plan, or the limits of this selection. Of a few great writers it was unnecessary to say any t-hing - of some ignoble ones sufficient to say what they had written. I have, in a few in stances, rather inserted a piece of inferior merit, than those which are so well known, as to be printed in every collection. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Download or read book Organising Poetry written by David Fairer and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revisionary study of the poetry of Coleridge, Wordsworth and their friends during the 'revolutionary decade' David Fairer questions the accepted literary history of the period and the critical vocabulary we use to discuss it. The book examines why, at a time of radical upheaval when continuities of all kinds (personal, political, social, and cultural) were being challenged, this group of poets explored themes of inheritance, retrospect, revisiting, and recovery. Organising Poetry charts their struggles to find meaning not through vision and symbol but from connection and dialogue. By placing these poets in the context of an eighteenth-century 'organic' tradition, Fairer moves the emphasis away from the language of idealist 'Romantic' theory towards an empirical stress on how identities are developed and sustained through time. Locke's concept of personal identity as a continued organisation 'partaking of one common life' offered not only a model for a reformed British constitution but a way of thinking about the self, art and friendship, which these poets found valuable. The key term, therefore, is not 'unity' but 'integrity'. In this context of a need to sustain and organise diversity and give it meaning, the book offers original readings of some well known poems of the 1790s, including Wordsworth's 'Tintern Abbey' and 'The Ruined Cottage', and Coleridge's conversation poems 'The Eolian Harp', 'This Lime-Tree Bower', and 'Frost at Midnight'. Organising Poetry represents an important contribution to current critical debates about the nature of poetic creativity during this period and the need to recognise its more communal and collaborative aspects.
